Alex and Sophie, I absolutely loved the discussion and the great advice! Sophie your comments and suggestions are very à propos. As a third year Duolingo student who is well into his 80s, learning the French language keeps me engaged with life and feeling lots younger. Yes, respect to you Dan, and all the best in your language journey. I too have done the duo lingo journey for around 24 months. The biggest leap for me was getting a script of a video or a few pages of text, and then going into a quiet place, such as a bathroom or garage, and reading aloud. One hour of this goes a long way. Also CCube french vids helped loads. Good luck. 👍👍👍

@@dancarroll6349 not a problem, happy to assist. It’s on the TH-cam channel called CCube academy. Another good way is to set Alex’s videos to subtitles on 0.75% speed and then copy aloud what he says. I have learned loads from his videos with this method 👍👍👍

I have to tell you that your use of the phrase “pottering around the house” put a big smile on my face! “Pottering” is a word I’ve never heard uttered before now, but it reminded me of how often relatives in Scotland and England catch me off guard during my visits with common phrases used in the U.K. you never hear in les États Unis! Hello Alex! Je viens juste de découvrir votre chaine, et en tant que "French native speaker" je dois dire que j'ai été impressionnée par votre niveau de français à tous les deux, mais aussi par votre façon de rester humble à ce sujet. J'ai moi-même appris l'anglais il y a quelques années et je sais la quantité et les heures de travail qu'il faut. Aujourd'hui j'apprends l'allemand, et mon challenge est d'apprendre cette langue le plus naturellement possible (sans étudier la grammaire, et sans prendre aucune note). Je rejoins Sophie sur comment maintenir la motivation. Apprendre une langue ouvre de nouveaux horizons, une porte sur un autre monde jusqu'alors inconnu. L'immersion est certainement un atout majeur, si l'on vise une progression rapide. Je suis dernièrement aller en Allemagne, et comme vous lors de vos premières expériences, je suis restée bloquée lorsque j'ai voulu parler et aussi perdue face à la vitesse d'élocution des natifs... expérience frustrante au début, mais après quelques jours j'ai pu constater que je faisais de rapides progrès. L'immersion reste néanmoins possible même quand on n'habite pas dans le pays de la langue ciblée, comme vous l'avez d'ailleurs expliqué, en variant les activités autour de la langue (ce qui permet de faire de nombreuses répétitions et de voir l'utilisation d'un même mot dans différents contextes) mais aussi en changeant la langue des activités courantes (cuisiner, visiter un musée ou regarder une série dans la langue cible). Trouver des opportunités de s'exprimer reste néanmoins plus difficile. Merci encore pour cette vidéo inspirante!

I think I heard Sophie saying "découvrer" which could make sense, but of course the real verb is "découvrir", du troisième groupe...

Another banger. I really enjoyed this one and the conversation was actually fairly easy to follow for me which is a nice switch. Sophie was an excellent person to interview as she spoke fast but very clearly which is a huge help for a learner like me. I think this may have been the first one of these conversations which I listened to and found myself not really translating in my head into english (which puts me behind the conversation and then I swiftly get lost) and it felt great. I'm working up to CSFC level so maybe that will be a next step after my current Lingoda credits are used up.
Thanks so much for these videos and all of the hard work you undoubtedly put in to make them.

Salut! Super épisode. Je dirais que les qualités de ton invitée pour parler des langues étrangères,oui son enthousiasme, mais surtout sa personnalité et ce qu'elle dégage. Elle est solaire.
Sinon ta phrase "si tu es enthousiaste, la langue ne va pas t'empêcher." il lui manque un complément d'objet. "La langue ne va t'empêcher de communiquer" ou "la langue ne va pas t'en empêcher".
Et peut-être que l'expression que tu cherchais et qui si colle très bien dans ce qu'elle voulait transmettre, c'est " la langue ne sera pas une barrière". D'ailleurs, je me demande quel serait l'équivalent de cette expression en anglais

Alex - you called Sophie your "bonne amie". With native speakers this is slightly ambiguous and could imply a more intimate relationship that exists between you. You might have used this opportunity to introduce the word "copine"! Continue the good work !!!

I believe I said "une bonne amie à moi" which normally makes it clear that there is nothing more intimate.
If you say "ma Bonne amie" or "mon amie" it gives this connotation.
As far as I know this is how it works..but using "Amie" and "copine" is a minefield 😅

You're absolutely right Alex!
"Ma" bonne amie (a slightly old fashioned expression) suggests an intimate relationship. "Une bonne amie à moi" means just a good friend...
