  • When 77-year-old folk music legend Tom Paxton stopped by Acoustic Guitar’s offices in late April 2015, it was in the midst of what he insists will be his last tour, after more than five decades of nearly ceaseless travel and recording. He was in town to support his latest release, Redemption Road, more than 60 albums down the line since his 1964 debut at the height of the “folk scare.” Paxton has traveled a long way since the hey-day of the Greenwich Village scene, but he has never stopped writing great songs and touching hearts (and minds) with his music. On this afternoon, joined by guitarist Robin Bullock, Paxton opened with a beautiful version of one of his best-known older tunes, “The Last Thing on My Mind,” then played a pair of songs from Redemption Road, the wistful and nostalgic “Central Square” and a lighthearted blues called “Susie Most of All.” He also shared a few stories and, of course, talked guitars.

I saw Tom at the Royal Albert Hall London in the Mid sixties. I couldn't get anyone to go with me as they had never heard of him. When he sang this he invited anyone who knew it to join in. To my pleasure and surprise, the whole audience sang it word for word so Tom stopped and left us all to complete it.

Really nice session with Tom and for my money one of the greatest songwriters of all time. A master craftsman who can write about humor, sadness, equal rights, or any topic you can think of. His songs always have a topic and make an impact.

It doesn't get any better than this. Wonderful song, beautiful guitar playing and a voice like the smoothest velvet. Every note, every syllable as clear as a bell. Today's performers need to listen and learn.

One of the truly great songwriters of that time when I was first learning to play the guitar. I eventually learned and sang a dozen of his great songs. This one was a favorite, as it captures that sense of regret most of us feel for the various ways we fail or stumble in life. His voice still touches my heart deeply, as it did back 50 year ago. I am now 74 and still sing this song from time to time. Thank you, Tom, for inspiring such sweet emotions and sounds.

I saw Tom Paxton in mid-November 2015 at The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA. I had been a fan for decades, but this was my first time to see him live. It was a bucket-list night for me. Terrific concert before a packed house. Afterward, he graciously stayed around and chatted with fans and signed CDs.

I saw Tom here in Toronto on November 3, 2015. He was in fine form . His song still radiate all the messages that they did when they were originally written. His voice is strong and his guitar playing is flawless. I am so glad I finally was able to see, listen and actually shake his hand and I spoke to him of how appreciative I have been to have his music to share with others. He will be missed.

Truly one of the great singer-songwriters. I saw him at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1969 where Dylan was the top act. Tom's song about smoking pot in Vietnam got the biggest combined laugh, cheer, and clap of the entire festival.
