Today, it's time to find out which Vanguard season is the best of them all.

Vanguard Season 1 is the only TCG anime that I've seen that let the game stand on its own with no life or death stakes or supernatural elements. I love it for that still
This is a bit late but I think it was implied that ren was going to kill aichi in the final match using his power.

Link Joker arc definitely gave my man Miwa some best bro moments in animes, truly a peak~
One of my least favorite things about legion is how they put so much emphesis on the power of friendship and the idea of "mates", even more than usual because of the Legion concept, and only 2 of Aichi's friends were there for him at the end bc they lost. Like it just felt so unsatisfying when misaki and kamui worked so hard and werent able to be there for aichi in the end even though they were there for him from the start.
The fights were kinda fire though ngl
Man that "mate" stuff got old real quick imo. I get it but i find it funny that they only use it for that season only and NEVER again lol.

Really didn't make sense for Misaki and Kamui especially to be left out. Not to mention Misaki never got closure for anything Kourin related, even though that had been an ongoing thing since Link Joker.
I think nostalgia does a lot of the heavy lifting for Link Joker
it definitely had some epic fights and iconic units
but having rewatched the series not long ago, the build-up toward the reverse part of the arc was excruciating
and even though it looks like reverse fights led to character development, in hindsight, they only reinforced existing character dynamics in most cases
Naoki and Shingo 100% carried the season tho, by far my favourite vanguard duo 💪💪
deadass I remember LJ being the reason I stopped watching vanguard because it was about 40 back to back episodes of just the Yubel arc from GX of Person shows up, loses off screen, is evil for the episode, is beaten and reverted. For like almost a year straight.
No, the build up was really fun, we got to enjoy the result of the first 2 seasons in Aichi and his confidence as a person, introducing 2 cool new characters and shows what the old characters are up to, and we finally get to see these characters actually having LIFE. The build ups MADE the reverse arc actually PEAK. The chemistry between the main Aichi group helps the emotional moments throughout the reverse arc, especially for Aichi and Kourin. Kourin is one of the most important person in Aichi's vanguard life, he was saved many times, and when his friend couldn't help him, she was always there for him. And then we see Kourin becoming someone who feels human through going to highschool and experience many fun experiences with Aichi and the group, only for her to be the one who suffered the most from the reverse arc(especially since she's the first member of Vanguard club). And LJ arc's impact was FELT throughout Legion Mate and even G era, Chaos Breaker was so iconic that they had to bring him back in GZ. It's definitely the best vanguard season of all time in terms of writing.
A slow build up is better for this type of series. Remember like 2 thirds of the episodes consist of cardfights leaving little time for character/plot development
watched Vanguard for the first time a couple months back. started with the OG 2011 series. the build-up to toward the Reverse part was AMAZING. and then the Reverse part started and *it* was excruciating. excruciatingly boring. they had a good thing going before that.
I do agree with Legion Mate being missed potential, but id put it in good because i really love the fights in the backhalf of the season even if the writing got inconsistent
To it's credit it does have some highlights,
Kamui finally beating Kai,
All of Naoki's fights are great,
The openings animations probably the best OG series has to offer,
The Quarter Knights (despite not reaching their full potential lol)
It was never dubbed
I find it really funny that Misaki doesn't have a single onscreen loss against Aichi (as far I remember) but She also lost all of her fights in Legion Mate LMAO
The kai vs gailard match was good
The ending for legion mate was amazing but a lot of it was mid tbh.
Shinemon is probably the biggest waste of potential.
season 1 is peak for me, the "filler" was imo some of the best it had to offer, no other anime really encapsulates the slice of life just hang out at the lgs with the bois afterschool to crack packs and jam games. misaki backstory, tuskiyomi photographic memory being the most creative and badass way to a connect a character to their playstyle, and psyqualia being such a cool gimmick cause the way it got in the heads of the opponents and possibly forcing them into misplays cause their supposed kill switch. Also what I loved is aichi lost. quite often. which is basically unheard of for this kind of show. his growth from struggling from being the weakest link on the team to where he gets to later is a very satisfying arc. also brought tension to some fights when even randoms can pop clutch heals.

I really like the teaser of the g season season 1 ep 1 at the end when chrono run by aichi shows a new generation of a main character.
Dude they did the same thing in the first episode of yugioh GX between yugi and Jaden except they bumped into eachother and yugi gave Jaden winged kuribo
G Next is alltime peak for me.
Got me hyped up like a madman every damn time Shiranui appeared on screen. Got to see Shion not _just aiming_ to be cool anymore but now having his coolness on *_full display_* every time he was on screen. Also Henri, my boi good, he really good he deserves the world. Kazuma reminded of so many people I play games with, I kinda liked it because his interactions with the rest of the cast felt so relatable.
And I must be the only one in the universe that enjoyed OD S1. Like, it made me care for them characters and while the later seasons are beyond a doubt better than it now some of those same characters feel like they're been left behind in a corner (see Megumi she's been sitting still for 2 seasons now wth do something with her please, that masques tease that got swatted out of the air immediately 💀💀💀 she's effectively *stuck* ).
Pretty solid list! Each era had it's shinning moments but some of them completely stood out above the rest. My personal favourite was Limit Break era, Break Your Spell hit HARD 🔥
One of my favourite anime moments was in Limit Break when Aichi versed a Granblue player in one of the special rule change rounds where your rearguards could preform drive checks.
Miwa realises with shock why Aichi took a bunch of damage early since he follows up by riding Ezel, Limit Breaking TWICE and calling a bunch of Grade 3's which all preformed twin drives!
Pulling triggers out of the whazoo most notably STAND TRIGGERS and going in AGAIN! That to me was the closet Vanguard got to a MONSTA CARDO! moment 😂
Aichi pulling another stand trigger when the opponent is alrd at 6 dmg is so wild 😂
Another moment I like in Asia Cir is when Aichi was fighting Jun and didn't drew Ezel, just when Jun thought Aichi is done with his turn, Aichi pulled a 200 IQ psyqualia move and top decked freaking Pellinore.
Man I'm really glad you put the mirei arc on the top peek because it was so good that you can't wait to see what happens next, I think I've rewatch it more than any of the other vanguard series
31:10 With Overdress/Wildress seasons being only 10-12 episodes long, I’d understand why they don’t emphasize school much.

the animation quality just went to yikes after G. At least a couple episodes in every season for G had peak animation shots and then... ouch. Overdress forward was a huge improvement.

@@Zarugoza5969 That is true Yuu Yoshiyama has been with Vanguard since Link Joker i believe. But V's art style (as much as people like to crap on it) really highlights her animation.
Look at Ibuki vs Leon, Rive vs Mark and Chrono vs Shinemon. HOLY MOLY they are AWESOME and could legit be on par with D's best fights. And i love D fights.
This video is so peak. Im glad that we share very similar opinions. In my opinion id put G Next at Bottom of Peak and messiah movie at very good JUST because of the unique fight animations and sequences they used.
Dude Girs Crisis was the best Vanguard season. FULL STOP! Shion'c arc to surpass Kai and save his family was everything. The TRY3 v. Q4 fight at the end was the best 6 episodes in the entire show. I will die on that hill.
Also, Will Dress season 2 is actively worse than season 1 and does not deserve to be in the same tier as G next. Don't ever disrespect my man Miguel like that ever again. Will Dress season 3 will be lit though
One thing that made me fell in love with Vanguard was how Asia Circuit helped create a certain aesthetic within the card game. I absolutely ADORED the new Gold Paladins, and every clan got its own style and traits. Not talking about random Kagero dragons and NG's robots, they already existed, but they kind of became their whole nation (you can't possibly tell me SB was decent, anime speaking...). I'm thinking about Aichi's GP, Ezel, Pellinore and then the Liberators the next season. He actually spent more time using GP than RP, if WE count the seasons. And they didn't feel at all likes "RP with golden armors", they claimed their place and ended up being really cool, comoared to... Soul Savior? Iconic, but defenetely overrated. Then yes, Asia Circuit had its own flaws, but imo it gave the anime (which by itself was already great) the sense of diversity reguarding the card game that it was very close ti lacking.
6:45 I believe TMS themselves licensed the anime outside of Asia, Bushiroad would later acquired the license for the rest of Vanguard anime later on (funny how Bushi didn't export the anime from the start)
Upon going back, I just realized none of the CFV anime prior to IF aren't in Crunchyroll anymore. So RIP watching the OG to G in subs officially.

Girs Crisis had Shion’s greatest shining moment, which was punching Shouma in the face.
Stride Gate had one glaring flaw. Gear Groovy could have had a better effect than being Nextage 2.
Overdress has Tohya who becomes incredibly memeable after season 1. Dude is just the embodiment of every TCG player

they really stepped up in the character and writing department like with the introduction of naoki
and i feel it really elevated and improved every character and season before it. EVERYONE had something to do this season.
really loved the soL school stuff and ofc the ops were bangers. my personal favorite of the entire franchise being mugen rebirth.

Idk how many people will feel this way, but I really enjoyed all of the build up in LJ. Those High School episodes were great imo, some nice slice of life that brought the Cardfight club together.
I like G next, especially the beginning but I feel like it became full of flaws as soon as the first part of the tournament ended. The under 20 was a cool concept but it became way too predictable with Chrono's team winning. They did Shion and Tokoha so dirty in their fights against chrono by allowing only one stride for them.
Bro i watched overdress up until the end of season 1 and stopped watching the seasons after that. can't believe how you put the next seasons above shinemon, vanguard g and g next. Definitely knowing what i'm gonna spend my free time with if your tierlist is accurate.

I was a new vanguard watcher and only knew yugioh so I binged the vanguard series all the way up to where the IF season was at the time and i enjoyed every minute of it! I agree with the top half but I did enjoy the v season 1 because we got the rin backstory that we wanted in muji season 1 which was really interesting and i liked season 2 because I love korrin and always happy to see my idol girls.
Really had teary eyes remembering the history of vanguard. I can't wait for S3 of WIll + Dress
I like Overdress Season 1 because it's much more character based. the card game doesn't feel like the only reason the characters exist but instead just everybody's favorite game.
Me not watching overdress aside the rest of tier list is 100% agreeable AF nice list ❤ 💯 tho I personally might put the first season of G 1 rank lower because it felt like it did too much build up and filler for me

Great Ranking mine is Legion and GZ are best entry but it's potential for resolve protagonist that become stronger overall it's great.
Girs Crisis is too good man. Shion became the goat. I still think Shion vs Kai should have been the final fight of the 3 because of how built up it was.
Stride gate was messy tbh. It needed more eps I feel because it felt too rushed. I would have put it in very good.

Neon Messiah was the first anime blu ray I bought. It was nowhere on the pirate sites for quite a while, so I ended up buying it so I could watch it. Barely understood it but I enjoyed it.

Link joker arc was so damn good - I never thought back then that a series would be able to peak like season 1 did which was magical at the time, but damn, did the LJ arc pop off. I straight fell in love with Chaos Breaker Dragon, and you bet I had him built ASAP. Remember running him at that year's springfest, which had that weird wonky Defenders vs Invaders format, which was the only thing that kept Link Joker down that format, as the other reverse decks weren't so hot at the team tournament. That was such a wonderful time.
For me, the big shift in my interest with the show spiralled down once we got to G, as the new cast did not inspire me much, but most of all, the anime really took a huge shift away from the actual cardfight itself. They'd brush by all the little plays in favour of showing a general skipping of turns with some animation, and at the end of the day, I am watching a tcg anime here. Let me see those plays!
Love me some vanguard though, and always will-just wish all my old gang was still around and my local shop didn't shut down. Too many formats and the cars game has changed so much, so I just sit there and shuffle through my old pre G decks every few weeks and play with imaginary opponents 🤣
I rewatched the first 2 seasons of Vanguard V and in my opinion they're not that bad. I completely agree with you about the overDress/willDress seasons. About that am I the only one who noticed that overDress and willDress seasons mirrors in a way the original anime?
Now that willdress is over, I can safely say it’s probably the biggest missed potential of any vanguard season ever. I truly never want to see almost any of the characters from willdress ever again

I loved the Link Joker era so much, literally peak Vanguard and Legion was just kinda eh? Like they are my favourite season and I'm glad people still love them to this day. The Vanguard anime has such a big place in my heart I still go back to it to this day! The OPs still haunt my Spotify playlists and the OG Vanguard anime will live on forever in my heart! To this date Ren is still my favourite character and no one will ever top him!

Will dress Season 2 I felt the Idol episode was very missed and the ending I honestly felt He should of won and not lose that fight.
It’s funny that the Legion era of the anime was pretty missed and yet the card game was one of my favorites.
Otherwise, I think I agree with you for the most part. V was really weird in that I thought they improved the original in some huge ways, and then the original did some things SO much better. My favorite is probably a head canon mix of them haha.
Its interesting for me I would honestly place a lot of things like Legion mate or etc higher if only they could be considered one big season like Girs crisis and Stride gate, I feel like the two separately makes it feel weaker compared to if they were one whole season they'd probably be in Peak or high one of the best, same with Legion mate and LJ + Neon Messiah cause imo I love that Legion mate closes off LJ for the next era, and the fights in all 3 of them are PEAK at least imo. The same goes with OD S1 and S2 S1 builds so much to S2 which makes S2 so much better but then when you separate it S1 on its own dosen't stand up nearly as much.
I still believe that kamui vs chrono was the best scene in G. Sad that kamui didin't get much after that.

No matter what you people say about the 2018 V series. That will forever be one of my favorite anime ever. It was literally my gateway to not only Cardfight vanguard as a whole. But to anime entirely too. It will stay in my top 10 anime list, and none of you will ever change my mind. End Of Story!!!! 😤

@@DifferentFight The fact, the 2018 V series got more than 1 season and made it to its finale, had all this merchandise like it’s acrylic stands even if it was Japan exclusive, be mentioned/shown in the 10th anniversary video of Cardfight Vanguard, got it’s own video game Cardfight Vanguard EX even if it was Japan exclusive, and got its mini show mini van large is proof of how successful 2018 V Series is. Especially in JAPAN which is all it needed. It may not be popular worldwide, but it’s popularity IN JAPAN is all that matters. If it really was a failure, we wouldn’t see any of this stuff at all. And I’m happy to have all of it. As long as the Cardfight Vanguard franchise is popular in Japan, it’ll keep growing.
The first season should be in peak just because of the OST. That opening got me so hyped up when I heard it play in a fight

Season 3 of the original is king, no contest. One thing I always loved about the anime, that later seasons sadly dropped mostly, were the ride chants, giving both the characters and the units more personality.
So I watched Vanguard on crunchy after watching G. But honestly I don’t know if I watched V or the original, but I think I watched V. Not knowing the difference I guess maybe I thought V was ok. But G has been my favorite. But actually I started watching because you got me into the game first.
As a kid who was watching anime just to see something cool ,something edgy something with more Kai, LJ totally gave that to me. I enjoyed it so much that Its still my most fav after so many years. Nostalgia is a pretty damn powerful thing after all
I agree with a lot of your list only one I would change is moving base g down to very good cause just cause like your reasoning for shinemon its first half is super mid to me that it drags the whole package down, cause even though I really enjoyed the second half I am not forgetting the first half exists.
Really miss the G crew hope they bring them back in D in some way.
Also I think imaginary gifts really weren’t a great mechanic imo protect was worse than the other 2 and accel cheese was not fun especially before gurguit Percival got restricted
Finally I think willdress s1 was really peak it’s what rekindled my interest in both the anime and the tcg youthberk especially after tempest was such a fun deck

My personal favorite series is G Next. It gives each of Team Try member got their own team and got to explore more characters. Had a great villain with Shiranui. There were flaws like stuff with Miguel, and some of the other villains outside of Shiranui. We also had the return of Aichi with Blaster Blade Exceed and just loved the climax and the throughpoint.
I will say honestly pretty mixed with Overdress. The first season was alright the second season was good but imo it wasn’t my favorite because I wasn’t a fan of the fights, tho I do get that the fights are more than just seeing the plays it’s about characters ideals up against each other. Like when the characters’s Vanguards appears it doesn’t hit unless it was Touya and Danji. Like tbh its pretty petty but it’s keeping me from continuing since I watched a few episodes of WillDress but it’s just not capturing my attention
I think that if G didn't have that weird initial start with the fights, it could have gone higher.
But with V, first OP is a BANGERR. Best thing about V for me was the small fan service scenes like seeing mamoru and trinity dragon and small things like that
The first phase tetralogy still hit different to me till this day honestly.
The V anime is how I got probably into the game and I really liked it but now I’ve watched more anime my standards have raised but I don’t want to watch it again because I want to remember it as this cool anime that got me into the game.

Willdress was amazing I was one of the people that got pulled back into the anime because of this season
I only watch the d era anime so here my ranking
Overdress ss1: Missed potential, it have some many potential, but the only thing we see is Tohya character arc and it like 3 ep, the fight is so short and hard to understand. Every be honest that we watch the anime mostly for the fight. The character and story is more like a additional thing. But one good thing about it is it focus on the character, it make the base for the other season
Overdress ss2: Peak, Now you take the character development form the ss1 then put everything on max, the story the fight, the character, the ost... It all combine into one. There many rememberable scene like tohya vs danji with break it down, yuyu vs mirei with DOUBLE OST.
Willdress ss1, very good This season mainly focus on the fight, the fight is very good but i feel like character is kinda fine, the most develop one is yuyu which is fine, but it just a good big fight.
Willdress ss2: One of the best, Like before, using the character form ss1 and develop even more, Urara got develop, Raika develop, Zakusa have more scene, Masque appear. The fight still super good. And we have more like a overall story than a big fight. The uniformer is a interesting villan too

I personally think that nostalgia hits really hard for people with Season 1. Like you said it has alot of filler. I also feel that Ren's motivation and grand scheme was just poor. I cut slack for the fact that its the first season but goddamn it didnt need to have so many useless/boring episodes. I think everyone just remembers the few memorable fights (Aichi v Kai, Misaki v Asuka, etc) and forgets the rest of the season.
I will say that most people who like to talk shit about G Season 1 only remember the first few episodes. Honestly after the Jaime fight, G Season 1 was pretty solid. Not that great, but solid.
GIRS crisis to me felt like nostalgia bait. Like if you look at the comment section for G episodes on youtube now, you just see how many people were bitching that the new season wasnt about Q4 and Aichi. I bet it hits hard for some and less for others. Personally it didnt hit that hard for me.
Stride Gate, however, is my favorite. Goddamn it was such a good conclusion and felt so complete. I loved Ryuzu. He is my single favorite antagonist in Vanguard.
Vanguard G was peak action. It had so much action and great animation. It was giving bakugan vibes

can anyone explain what appeal the seasons after Legion Mate had? i could not stand them at all because the fights were not exactly the way they were in the original series, and i dropped both G and Overdress 4 episodes in.
Completely new to Cardfight. How age appropriate would you say the anime is? Is it basically like Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh in that regard?
Yeah I'd say it's very similar in tone to Yu-Gi-Oh!, but a lot less of the supernatural stuff and more actual real life daily card game stuff.

I stopped at episode 7 when Danji's hand was literally in his pants on his crotch sleeping next to Yuyu. 🤮 Soundtrack is good but otherwise I hope the other seasons aren't like this haha.

I think this is the 7th day of asking for shadowverse content. But I've been with the anime since v but idk if i should watch g. I watched some of g but never finished it and didn't go past that . And i didn't watch anything pre g either. But i really like overdress but ik v was terrible so i might watch it if you really recommend

Overdress S2 was just something else. I remember the whiplash I got binging the series thinking to myself, "damn is this really a vanguard anime holy". Its just so good
there's way too many longer card fights and barely any story and slice of life moments now............
The entirety of G was a good package and I love the character development and how they make you care about these characters, and I am tired of people discounting it simply because of boomer mentality

(Warning long post) I would have sat G Next at the top in the "Very Good" category. Reasons being what brought it down to me is because:
1) Tokohas Miguel obsesseion.
2)Taiyou beating Kumi when he didn't deserve the win and I feel his character would have been better if the victory against Amaruda gave him more fullfillment since he lost to her before and him fighting Kumi gave him a bit of assistance in expecting what Genesis can do since Genesis and Oracle are sister clans.
3)We got blue balled of seeing a literal fight between Ibuki and Possesed Onimaru.
4) Not really getting invested into Noah since we only saw his personality for a short bit and not how he casually acts in a fight and only what he seems like via a flashback with his teammates. If they established his character more then let him get possessed by Chaos Breaker it would have been better, along with the fight of Chrono and Noah making more sense since he talks as if he knew Noah for a long time when to us it was just that 1 ep when Rin fought Shion and Noah acting like an infant about Chronos hairstyle.
5)Should have built up Miguel better and let him stay around for 3+ eps before killing him off. They could have built up on him being her teacher to a degree that despite being clusmy he loves what he does since Tokoha was conflicted about doing the Under20 but wanting to still study in France. That way people would have somewhat gotten use to him and more invested and then just sudden death happens and that would make Tokohas feelings a bit more justified and maybe even a scene with Kumi being sisterly to Tokoha in her time of grievance since Kumi is a tease and tease Tokoha about her being in love with Miguel. (Would have made profit from shippers lol and also the whole teasing thing would have been before Miguel died not after cause that would be messed up😅)
As someone who saw the entire Aichi seasons from the day he got his Blaster Blade stolen to the end where Kai went to back Aichi, skipped the entire G anime era, and got back into the anime again with Will Dress 1 and 2 but caught up on all Overdress episodes
My personal take is that the first Vanguard season is Peak, Asian Circuit with Ezel was good, and I was not a fan of the Link Joker era.
Life happened and I skipped the entire G era anime.
And having starting the D format with Will Dress Season 1 and having caught up on all Overdress and Will Dress episode, Overdress Season 1 was very fun, season 2 was very good, Will Dress Season 1 was hype with the new decks, and Will Dress Season 2 was mid for me and Mirror Varaina & Danji VS Michiru was what helped made the season enjoyable for me. I can't help keep my eyes off Yuyu.
I have the Vanguard Cardfight episodes stream on my TH-cam sometimes so when I see the G Era, I can say that I enjoy the first few episodes of G and the final few episodes of G with the white Chronjet.
The Bermuda Triangle mermaid episodes are boring to me too so it is bottom tier for me. Aichi If was very good and fun for me.

I agree with this list pretty much until overdress stuff. And that is simply due to the fact I couldn't bring myself to watch it. I really liked the first 3 episode of season 1. And episode 6 is probably the best episode in the franchise, but as much I could tell season 2 improved, due to season 1 not getting me attached to the characters. Only danji and mieri really stood out for me. And that was the only thing I cared about in that season at all. I think watched the first 3 episodes of both will dress seasons, and didn't like any of the new characters so I just dropped the anime.
I think the main thing is I dont watch card game anime for the card fights at all. Only for the characters and how the card game let the characters be explored. And overDress just didn't sale on YuYu as protag at all. Like he had the potenional, and so much set up, but just feels so bland for me. Which really unfortunate because I legit was super hyped for the anime, and it started off so strong, but never reached pass mid for me outside of epiosde 6 for tohya, and danji/meiri's relationship.
For me Stride gate carries.
We have good set of antagonist. Heck Ryuzu could carried the entire arc alone.

Kris lost points for me for not placing LM in PEAK as that season is my all time favorite season cause of thing saver alone. Also i think kris forgot why Kai switched from RP to Kagero. Kai wanted to save aichi so he used royals as a way to have aichi be with him in spirit. Over time tho, he begin to realized that royals isnt really his clan, its aichi's, and if aichi wanted to kai to save him, he would want kai to use the deck he is best good at, not the deck aichi's good at. Kagero is Kai's clan not aichi's, not kamui's and not misaki's. His clan. It would be like if in season 4 of the original season of yugioh where yugi gets sealed and atem would switch the gadgets to save him just to have yugioh in his honor. It's not his deck.
I liked v….mostly for the characters.
Ren was fucking hilarious, asaka was also fun. They gave Kai a better character ark and it did interesting shit.
