WALKS IN DORSET at LEWESDON HILL (THE HIGHEST HILL IN DORSET) & BROADWINDSOR (4K)

  • In this episode of my series “ Walks in Dorset”, I take a 5 mile “circular” walk from the village of Broadwindsor up to Lewesdon Hill (the highest hill in Dorset) & back. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car in Broadwindsor and after having a look at the St John The Baptist church I have a wander around the village. I had a couple of small detours - firstly to the East of the village to check out the cricket pitch (one of the prettiest in the county) & also to the North West of the village to see if I could spot what was one The Butcher's Arms pub at Hursey.
Broadwindsor still has one pub - The White Lion - as well as a community stores. There is a lot of interesting history to the village - Charles II once slept in what was once The Castle Inn (now a property called The George - it is no longer a pub) - and Crosskeys House (also once a pub) has links with the story of Martha Brown who was the last woman to be publicly hanged in Dorset.
My route took me out of Broadwindsor, heading South through fields and uphill towards Lewesdon Hill. After entering woods near the top of the hill, and passing by the memorial to WW2 pilot Jean De Cloedt - I climbed the final steep ascent to the top where I got to explore the remains of an Iron Age Hill Fort.
I then followed a path Southwards & downhill to the foot of Lewesdon Hill before heading West past a farm.
My route then took me uphill - with some great views to the South including Pilsdon Pen (the site of another Iron Age Hill Fort) - to a ridge at which point I joined a section of the Wessex Ridgeway that took me back up Lewesdon Hill.
I finally reached the memorial to Jean De Cloedt again and retraced my steps back to Broadwindsor.
NB: There was a short section of the footpath near Great Beach Coppice (on the Westwards section of the walk) that was VERY muddy (almost like a bog - even in July). There may have been an opportunity to divert off the public footpath via a field to the North to avoid this - otherwise you will need a pair of good waterproof boots.
The White Lion pub is a “community pub” and it is best to check their website for opening times (some days, the pub does not open until 5pm).

@@DaveFord I wished I could do that too Dave. I grew up and live still in Eastern Ky. My siblings and I would go exploring in the hills all the time and to this day when I see the sun shining through the trees I want to climb up the hills and see what I find. It is my fondest memories of my childhood and I feel that when I go walking along with you. Thank you again for showing me your beautiful countryside .☀️

Good workout for Logan and the old fella today! Got the lungs and muscles working! Lovely countryside Dave, I remember, must be 20 years ago now, doing a job in the village of Stoke Abbott, took about a half day, and as it was a gorgeous early spring afternoon, and always keeping a pair of walking boots in the van for such times, I parked up when I'd finished and walked up around Lewesden Hill. There weren't too many leaves on the trees then and the views were fantastic, like you said, Colmer's Hill and Golden Cap and a sparkling sea beyond. Brought back all the memories, so thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to make such professional videos that are equally as good if not better than most tv programs available. Me and hubby love walking around our local area of Dorset (Weymouth) and enjoyed a great walk today around 8 miles of Portland, lovely 😊

One of my favourite parts of Dorset (though there’s a lot of those). Many years since I’ve been able to walk in that county, but so gratifying to learn it is still as quiet as ever away from the coastal honeypots. Thank you Dave (& Logan,) for another lovely walk.

Glorious landscape, Dave, and the quality of your filming and photography shows it off magnificently. I also really appreciated the research you had done when talking about the village of Broadwindsor. Thanks again. This was really enjoyable and lovely to see Logan with you as always. What a gentle companion.

Liked the Logan moment when he chased his tail! The tales you told were super interesting too! I think I walked near Trent where Charles II returned to on my walk from Sherborne to South Cadbury. I was on the Monarch's Way there too. Super scenery too - thanks for sharing with us!

Thanks Jim. When you get away from the more popular "coastal" locations, there really are some quite peaceful & beautiful walks inland, around that area.

Thank you Barry. I bought the bag off Amazon back in 2020. Still available now on Amazon for £29.99 . Description is : "autumndeer Laptop Bag 14.5 inch Mens Vintage Casual Canvas Messenger Bag Men's Military Leather Canvas Travel Briefcase Crossbody Satchel Shoulder School Bag for Notebook Laptop". I find it easier to "grab things" on the go using that bag rather than having to stop and take off a rucksack type of bag.
