    Catwoman is one of Batman's oldest and most complex foes. The character is a blur, constantly shifting back and forth between good and evil. Numerous creators have pushed her forward, but it's really Ed Brubaker and Darwyn Cooke who reharnessed her for the modern age and gave her a sense of purpose instead of continually packaging her as a sexual foible for Batman.
    I know some of this info is dated since Batman #50 and Catwoman # 1 have come out. I wrote this monthsssss ago and am finally now getting out. Enjoy anyway, fools.

    From the look of the outfit alone, it looks like Zoe Kravitz's Selina will be closer to the Ed Brubaker version than other renditions, which makes me very excited. Hopefully her personality will also be similar.

      I sure hope so! I havent checked out much of the recent run, but I still think the Brubaker/Cooke influences are some of the best modern tweaks to the character

    Catwoman does not entice male readers. She is mostly well liked by female readers. Women like her character because shes sexy and sexual, and there's nothing wrong with that. What is wrong is for the writer to say. We shouldnt potray her in a sexual way because its demeaning to women. If he thinks wearing skimpy outfits is demeaning women then he is the one being sexist right now

    • @RickNazden
      @RickNazden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That's very true and I hope I didn't give the impression that a character wearing skimpy clothes is inherently wrong or makes her weak. With someone like Catwoman or Emma Frost (one of my favorite comic characters in general) their internal strength and personality distinguishes them as interesting, engaging people with an interesting outlook on life and what they wear doesn't matter in the slightest bit. It just so happens that their outfits reflect their bold personalities (like all good costume designs should).

    I have been saying for years I wish they'd return to the purpose of her existence, I love the fun flirty side of her but I want to see her practical intelligence and street smarts work in tandem.

    • @annymora-rq6vi
      @annymora-rq6vi หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Vishakha_B897 It is true that Ram V's career is a love letter to that of Ed and Darwin, it must also be said that although Bob Kane speaks from a misogenic side, I respect Bill Finger's writing much more and that she was villainous, but different In the Bronze Age, especially that story about Vikki, it's worth something that doesn't make sense to me. Selina would never attack a girl who comes out as Bruce, and what they did bothered me. That's not Catwoman. Whoever read it in the Golden Age knows about the story of Linda Pagés and Selina was a lady with her, she didn't attack her or Bruce

    Great video. Thank you for making it. I tend to agree that the Brubaker run was the best for storytelling and getting a deeper look at the character and her conflicts. Definitely my favorite character. As an anti-hero, Selina is able to accomplish what might be considered good outcomes often through questionable means such as her Robin Hood actions.

    I’m probably gonna get a lot of hate, but I'm usually pretty tolerant with how everything is written, or drawn. I really don’t understand why a character can’t be sexualized as part of their design. Being erotically suggestive doesn’t make a character worthless and immodest. Why does anything have to be different and respectful just because she zipped her costume up a little more? Sure, the suit is more practical, which is completely fine by me, but she also operated fairly well with her “demeaning” outfits. She’s beautiful either way, and there are people in real life that have no problem sexualizing themselves. We're all people and have bodies, so let the writers and artists depict their vision as they seem fit, be it Catwoman’s cleavage or the Batsuit’s nipples.

      I think there’s an issue if the character is sexy, but bland. There has to be more to a character than good looks. I actually think her black outfit is way better than her purple one.

    • @onyxinvictus
      @onyxinvictus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@superjlk_9538 I agree-my perspective on this issue has changed. I’ve realized the pernicious consequences of sexual objectification in entertainment, and I’m now more concerned with portrayals of realistic, value-oriented female characters.

    The Robin Hood aspect, is essential to Catwoman's story.😻 Reboots have REALLY hurt Catwoman's character development in the comics. BTAS didn't really do Selina Kyle justice, but The Dark Knight Rises, and the Gotham by Gaslight animated film, were great examples of what she's evolved into. The Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt, and Michelle Pfeiffer performances, have made Catwoman a pop-culture icon. Paul Levitz with Earth-Two, and Len Wein with Bronze Age Catwoman, gave her a redemption story.
    Whether she's allowed to be with Batman or not, it's important that Catwoman can stand on her own, and be presented as a fun, complex, and layered thief/anti-hero.😻

    Great video, but I wish that you'd discussed Catwoman's personality in the Injustice games and how it measures up (or fails to) to Brubaker's portrayal rather than just her appearance, which can be customized to remove that hole in her chest (unfortunately, I don't think that you can remove the heels). Other than that minor detail, I really enjoyed your essay.

    I loved the Balent/Dixon run in the 90’s. Yeah she was overtly sexy, but she had so much depth and nuance in her complex personality. She was motivated to seek stability and security, she feared and desired love, she had a protective nature that clashed with her trust issues. Duffy and Dixon wrote her character and plot far better than this video gives credit for - far better than in New 52.

    I agree with all your assessments except leather (along with latex and PVC) is not a practical material for an outfit used for athletics and fighting. It offers nearly no protection from blunt or piercing force (although it offers decent protection against scrapes and slashes which is why bikers wear it along with the insulating properties.), constricts movement, and gets HOT. Only in the coldest parts of winter when outdoors do I zip up a leather jacket while moving about.
    As ridiculous as it looks, Selina unzipping her catsuit serves a purpose other than titillating the male gaze.

    I don’t entirely understand how that’s misagonistic of him to say. Sure there are good women, but there are women who can simply control men’s life and men can resent ever falling in love. It’s not just a stereotype, that’s a real thing to be honest

    Brubaker's story seems very interesting, but Cooke's art is not that convincing. I don't completely hate Selina's face, but it does pull the comic down. Btw, Bob Kane was mostly right. Women sometimes are exaggeratedly friendly, not just acting as if they are romantically interested, when they are romantically interested, and this particularly counts when they do not make it clear that they are romantically interested. And when that is gone, you don't only lose a romantic connection, but a friend. Men can't easily go from closeness to detachment and that's why maybe it's best to consider having a certain detachment from the start.
