Jean Alexander was superb. Mrs O a legend. I think there were probably more of these hard working decent folk in the backstreets of Manchester than we will ever know. The greatest generation
@@christinefougereShe also reminds me a great deal of my own grandmother from North East England. Her mannerism, clothes and the way she totters about in her shoes, always busy, always on the move. It's awful how badly I felt for Hilda, being strong armed by useless Alf's shark of a builder, to sell her home. I had to keep telling myself that this is a story written 40 years ago, and isn't real .
The actor playing Sue Clayton now plays Bernie Winter in CS, mother to Gemma and Paul. She's very young here but if you listen and look at her, you'll see it's her.
In real life, Alf Roberts extending his shop into the house next door would get tied up in years of planning red tape. He would have to go through the tortuous procedure to repurpose no.13 from a residential to a commercial property (on top of the normal planning permission process). And the residents of no.11 would surely have reason to object as they would suddenly be living next door to an expanded corner shop instead of the residential house that used to be there. Alf as a councillor would have known all this, you would have thought, but seems to think he can get it all done and dusted in a week or two?
It’s funny how the writers didn’t learn their lesson with the Claytons from the Hopkins, another failed attempt at planting a whole family in the street.
I never ever undstood what they were thinking with wilf? It wasnt even his acting, he just looked odd and never seemed to look right or fit in? They made quite a few mistakes over the years, but the state of corrie now days, Is just massive mistake i dont even watch it any more, i only watch the oldies, its a pleasure with brilliant story lines, great acting from nearly eveyone of the cast, esp hilda, stan and eddy, thank u for putting these on. Your a gem. ❤️
So it was the hostility of the cold-hearted Claytons that turned Terry Duckworth from a half decent lad into a bad boy. His downfall can clearly be seen at beginning here.
I really hope Hilda has someone else look at the roof, and doesn't trust that shady guy that is in cahoots with Alf, Kevin shd have his dad come look...
@@RiaLake is that so? None of the Claytons were ever up in court, rowed in the pub, fiddled, played away, showed up at parties they weren't invited to, default on their debts, pinch the house-keeping to play the gee-gees, guilty of robbing Alf's shop. I can go on, if you like, love.
This is a very bad time for vintage Corrie, the downturn starts in 83 and is very bad this year, and there's the constant, underlying nag of knowing that Hilda leaves in 87. It does settle for a bit after that, but then starts again with the run up to Bet's departure. I tend to fall away around 1992.
But why do they even need to expand? I mean in today’s Corrie( which admittedly I haven’t watched for ages) D&S Alahan’s, which is the new shop, is more like a supermarket-and no 13 is still there!

It's great if you like them, but if I try to look at them in an unbiased way, there's a lot wrong and it's right from the start. I think it's a mix of poor stories, which make them both uninteresting & unpopular too early, but worse, the casting failed. Sadly, both the actors and the characters are totally forgettable, the mother is very flat, the dad is boring and barely there, both daughters are unlikable, and it's all made worse by the Terry storyline. It's a recipe for disaster on all fronts, we're just lucky someone pulled the plug as quick as they did!

It would have been interesting to see a romance between Hilda and Percy.. Phyllis would have gone mad and Hilda would have been looked after for once in her life.
Betty seems to be the only one still making sarky comments to Wilf-and she wasn’t even there when he stole the money ( then gave it back and was forgiven). Won’t be long before Bet comes out and says “Betty-a word.” ....
The Clayton's really were a horrible family. Dads a milkman, mums a cheap dressmaker, sister works in a Bakery and the eldest gets two Bs and one C in her A levels, which makes them Aristocracy. Thankfully they were written out.

Is it a coincidence that many, if not most, local Councillors own property, either rental housing or commercial. It seems a rather comfortable self-serving arrangement, for the Councillor.
It's interesting how they often gave the morally dubious characters a Southern / London accent. I think in part because in the older generation back then, London was viewed as a very sleazy place (with some justification).

Oh aye? It's the Clayton's?
And being dragged up by Jack and Vera Duckegg, has nothing to do with it? Give over.
I agree. He was a good lad and tried to do the right thing with his kid.he had every right to be a father to it.
Yes it was the beginning of bad boy Terry. He really loved Andrea, he didn't deserve to be treated that way.
I hated how the parents blamed terry for Andrea's situation. She incharge of her body not terry.
No one raised by Jack and Vera was going to end up being a good person.

This might sound weird, but…I liked Wilf. I thought he was an interesting addition to the show.
Yes, weird, he was horrible, unattractive, little creep.
Apart from the one silly, spur of the moment, theft of Mike's money, I thought Wilf was a good character.

I wonder if this is what turns Terry. He’s really wanting to take his responsibilities seriously but not being able to.

I think they expanded the shop by incorporating the downstairs living area.
Got to give Jack some credit, he warned Terry many times about that Clayton girl and to be careful.
Jack would have been against any girl, thought his son should be shagging everything.
