Corrie September 1985 - Goodbye to the uncharismatic Claytons (I was not sorry to see them go); goodbye to the old corner shop (I was sorry), and hello to Jack Duckworth behind the bar of the Rovers. It seems around this point, that he and son Terry started to swap characters: Terry gradually becoming the bad boy of the street, and Jack softening from mean and nasty husband and father, to almost respectable loveable rogue.
The only time I knew about Jack. A law abiding family man. (90's forwards) The reality, (70's and 80's) a cold hearted drunk who had no time for his son especially, besides his wife. Just shows you how generations of viewers can be manipulated. I don't even recognise the Duckworths as a whole family from the characters I knew from the early to mid 90's. Terry done well being as kind hearted as he was. These writers just push the limits constantly.
I agree, when we watched the show the Duckworths were lovable, I couldn't believe what a screaming harridan Vera was in these earlier episodes. To think they ended up much loved and mourned!
Percy was right about the self service aspect of the new way of shopping. I remember the corner stores of yesteryear, the person behind the counter helping you and striking up a conversation. Also, Martin Platt, his acting ability peaked at smacking his lips and tutting.
I am just surprised people did all their week shopping in a convenience store (must have cost a lot lol). Maybe it was just easier for the writers to not include a supermarket.
The open/closed sign in The Cabin is pretty much useless. 90% of it is covered up by the wooden central part of the door, so if you are standing outside, you will hardly be able to see the sign.
38p in 1985 is the equivalent of £1.44 in today's money. My yearly salary in 1985 was about a quarter of what I earn now within the same industry similar post so it's all relative.
it's £1.40 if you buy Heinz try the supermarket own brands you can get a four pack for about £1.70 not much more than 38p each. Heinz is not worth the extra money!
