If anything they should be turned off during times when class is in session, but not banned outright. It's nobody's business if kids want to contact their parents or whomever once school lets out for the day.
Majority of kids are texting while their phone and hand is in their pocket. Need to wake up to the real problems and this one’s gone on too long. Teachers are quitting because the kids are so out of control. I speak to teachers all the time.
Once school lets out and classes are done for the day is one thing. But calling, texting, and surfing the web on phones during the schoolday and especially academic instruction is unacceptable for kids.
Kids cannot help themselves. Hell, even adults can't help themselves around these devices. At least this is a good first step, or at least we can observe the changes in grades in the coming year.
Kids don't need to play games and check facebook at home or at school to live throughout the day. This is good for them and our future. If you don't agree, your the problem.

I think it’s a good idea, cellphones are just too distracting for children in a school environment where learning must be the priority. As for parental contact, many millions of us went to school and grew up safely without constant cellphone contact with our parents. In a real emergency, parents can always call the school to get in touch with their child. Otherwise, they should be left alone to concentrate on learning.
The idea has some merit but should be left to the school district to decide. We don't need another "we know best" edict from the Royal State Government.
Cellphones were started to be seen in high school around the time I graduated in 2006. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be for a teacher to have to deal with smartphones in the hands of students.

As a successful, self-made Boomer, there is no way that I could concentrate on class with a phone in my pocket. OTOH, classes should be filmed and available for parental review to minimize grooming by teachers.
As opposed to how it used to be prior to 2006? You must be in your 20's. You're gonna have to back up that claim with evidence, bub. If a student is busy filming their surroundings during class time, they are not paying attention to their studies. Teachers only get upset with students when students are deliberately not paying attention and being disrespectful to those in their surroundings during class time.
I don't have to prove anything. The information is available if you look. It's actually better if you do the research & find the data yourself. The bigger question is why the large media outlets bury the stories.
