    I did this video primarily as an aid to one of my kids but posted it publicly. I didn't give it much thought at the time. I see it has 60k views which I find astounding. Had I known that I might have done some other camera angles and demo as such.

    I've been using a blues Jr. Since 98 and I set my master at 9 or so depending on the venue and I set my volume at 4. E.Q. to taste, I tend to run it scooped with a strat. I use my guitar volume and tone to go from clean to drive. I go from Van Morrison to SRV with my guitars volume knob, no pedals required.

    Well Down Sir, clear and concise. I set my Nos Jr very similar to how you set your but the Jr 4 is tweaked a bit differently yet still using the Master up and volume lower for a clean platform to introduce color by adding stomp boxes.

    Best JR video yet. My GOD, all I wanted to hear was the amp, and other videos did nothing but discourage me. Thanks...Now I can see what the JR offers, and what the reason I hear good things about it. I'm giving my Marshall a new home, and pulling the trigger on a JR in a few days. Now It's all about what speaker. Thanks again...Good Job!!!

    My fav settings with the B Jr. (tweed) are similar to your first method. Setting the volume around 6-7 and the Master at 4 or higher gives you a nice edge of breakup sound that works well with pedals or just straight in. To me, when you run the Master full up and bring in the volume it just sounds too spikey in the trebles. I know a lot of people like that for more pristine cleans.. but to me it doesn't sound like the amp was designed to run that way. Some other things you can do to negate the harshness of the reverb and overall trebles of this amp-
    - Swap the stock reverb tank for a Mod tank
    -Clip the bright cap
    -Use a 12AT7 in V3
    -Break in that speaker!
    This amp loves telecasters and maple fretboard guitars in general!

    I set up the amp similar to what you have shown here. Thanks for the confirmation and the tip. Unfortunately, it is sometimes not easy to find the right settings - even for me who has been playing guitar for over 30 years. I find it especially important to play with the volume and tone on the guitar. As a beginner, you usually turn everything up. But you have a lot more possibilities if you first turn down the volume and tone on the guitar to something like 3/4, then set a moderate rhythm volume on the amp and then turn it up a bit with the guitar (with effects if necessary) and really drive or boost the amp. If you turn down the volume on the guitar again, you have a somewhat more distressed and cleaner sound.

    I have a Western Blues Jr. with a Cannabis Rex speaker. With my tele I go bass all the way up, mid and treble down around two, master up near 10 and drive at 3 or 4, fat switch on. My reverb is like 5 times more than yours... between 1 and 2 for normal verb and beyond that it gets real deep, long, and swampy(way better than most digital verbs). I like the tone much much better driving the power tubes more than the preamp. For heavy drive I'll use a pedal, which I find doesn't sound good with the preamp up high. Also this amp sounds good at lower volumes if you use a speaker attenuater between amp and speaker. A lot of people don't like these amps, but if you spin those knobs there are some great sounds to be had.

  • @TheJurgisRud
    @TheJurgisRud 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    About the bottom end... The speaker connects to the chassis with a 1/4" cable connector. I unplugged it and hooked it up to a 4x12" closed back speaker cab and there was plenty of low end in that tone. So it's in there, just perhaps the Fender cab and/or speaker just isn't letting it out. If anyone wants to try this, be sure the ohm resistance of your cab matches the original speaker of course.

    @larryguitar5902  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yes I think you can leave the fat switch on a clean tone. Basically the fat switch turns off the bass cut in the circuit. So the clean tone should have more bottom. Also agree with BG below. I default to less is more with the pedals and try to get most of the tone from the amp. I like pedals to be subtle and add some compression and delay. I'm fine with drive and boost but try to avoid making the amp sound like it's buzzing.

    • @kennethc2466
      @kennethc2466 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, the 'fat switch' brings in a cathode follower, that boosts. It's not designed to have 'more bottom', it's designed to run driven, and back off for clean. The 'fat switch' makes the amp back off less, with the guitar volume knob, so it's best used as a boost. At 15 watts, it's never gonna have a loud clean, nor does a Princeton. I think a Blues Jr has a lot more bass than a Princeton.

    • @larryguitar5902
      @larryguitar5902  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you turn crank the Master and then bring up the Volume you get decent bottom. Basically just turn the amp up loud. This amp is not going to give you the same bottom you get from a 40 watt or 60 watt amp. I also have a Vox AC15 which is more or less the same power level and think the Blues Jr has more punch than the Vox.

    • @larryguitar5902
      @larryguitar5902  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My understanding is that the circuit naturally cuts some bass by attenuating it. The fat switch turns that attenuation off. So turning the Fat switch on essentially takes the bass cut out of the signal. There are some really good YT that get into the weeds about mods and suggestions for changing out components and this is one of the first things they focus on. I find that if I crank the amp then I leave the switch off as I get a naturally good EQ. But at bedroom levels or small venue I tend to turn it on. I find that as you turn up the volume the relative eq levels change.

  • @rokam5568

      $$$. Same reason they quit making them in the USA. Absolutely no reason this amp should retail for $799.00. Huge rip off. Not a great gig amp and too loud for bedroom/ apartment. For home there are a number of amp/cab sims out there much easier to dial in good tone and much less costly.

  • @ronsegura1215
    @ronsegura1215 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So, does the master knob work with the EQ settings and the volume bypass the EQ?

    • @larryguitar5902
      @larryguitar5902  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Truthful answer is I don't know but I don't think so. The main thing about the master is that if you turn it up and then bring up the volume you don't drive the tubes as much as when you max the volume and then bring up the master. My observation is that when kids first play guitar they really like distortion so they will drive the amp. As we mature we tend to move to a cleaner sound. But there is a relationship between volume and EQ where the human ear hears things differently than what the amp may be doing. In other words I think highs increase in overall intensity faster than lows as you bump up the master. You then control that at the guitar by backing off the treble. When you increase volume as a distorted sound I think you are just increasing a compressed sound. It all depends upon what you are going for.

    • @Tzadeck

      Basically this works for any tube amp that has a separate channel volume and master volume. So, yes, it's the same way you can think of a hot rod deluxe.
      (Some Fender amps, though, don't have a master. Think Champs or Princetons.)

    • @larryguitar5902
      @larryguitar5902  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Generally there shouldn't be too much static noise. With any amp the first thing I do is to not plug anything into it and then crank up the knobs past the mid point. If there is excessive noise then it's the amp. Mine is quiet. If you get hiss then most likely it's probably a tube and usually one of the preamp tubes. If you plug in something then you know it's coming from the cable or guitar. But decent amp tech can diagnose it quickly. The Blues Jr does have some natural static but it it should be fairly quiet until you crank it.

Earlier in the day he did a soundcheck and his amp crapped out. He borrowed mine and carried on with a show for about 300+ at the Fur Peace Stage. It was a revelation to see how a true artist works. He cranked the master to 10 to get the max possible clean and then got all his tone from his fingers. His pedalboard only had a clean boost and a single slap back delay. Yet he got an entire universe out of it. Naturally when we all said our goodbyes on Sunday I had him sign the amp.

    • @larryguitar5902
      @larryguitar5902  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes actually I agree with you. You can drive the amp by cranking the Master and it will change the character. I was making a point but probably oversold it. Definitely both the EQ and the drive is affected even with the Master. I was thinking more about bedroom or practice level and trying to emphasize that most people select the amount of drive first and then decide how much they want to increase the overall volume. But I think your point is well taken. The same thing is true at the guitar. Turning up the volume alone changes the character..
