How To Fit A Bike In A Car? / Transport A Bike Without A Roof Rack

  • Cycling tips for beginners: How do you fit your bike into your car? Today is our first time putting both of our bikes in our car, and we wanted to show you how we loaded up our two road bikes inside our tiny car (Japanese kei car).
    Fortunately, even though our car is small, there is a lot of vertical space, so we decided to fold up the back seats and flip the bikes upside down. We were able to fit both bikes inside by just taking off the wheels.
    We still have some decent space in the car, but I am not sure if our mountain bikes will fit. We may have to purchase an extra rear rack to make moving our bikes a bit easier. What do you think of our setup and do you have any ideas for improvement?

    I often put the bike crank at bottom with sponge to protect the chainring from damages. I also took a big plastic bag, then cover the drivetrain side to avoid it from hitting the car cushion and others

    I usually use cardboard for cushion, it works great to put between wheels too. Glove latex and brake cleaner alcohol base for degreaser is helpful to keep it clean. Also some QR chain keeper is nice to keep the chain straight, but it's a little bit a hassle .

    Impressed that you managed to fit those bikes inside the K-car!
    There's a pretty long and nice stretch along the coast from Fuji-shi to Numazu-shi in Shizuoka. Think it's about 20km one way. It's a shared path but very wide, many cyclists as well. You could also do the path along the Kanogawa at Izu. Oh, and the Nishi Izu Skyline was a great ride too - about a 900m climb, with gorgeous views at the top. Missing those bike rides much.

    Nice job fitting in the bikes. I normally put my wheels in wheel bags to protect them. Maybe an option that could work for you? Also I've switched to Squirt (a wax chain lube) instead of oil on my road bike because I go tired of the black greasy mess. It's been two months and chain is much cleaner now. Worth thinking about. One more thing... I saw at Mont Bell & some japanese bike shops cloth bags that you can put your bike in and carry from your shoulder and maybe not so expensive. Could be great option for in your car to keep everything clean and scratch free 👍

    My first car was bigger than Suzuki-chan (XD) so I could get the whole road bike in there with the seats folded without taking the wheels off. But then my second car was the Smart ForTwo so I was only able to put my Brompton in that one. But it was so fun to be able to go to a bike friendly place and just ride.
    Seeing as I’m no longer a car owner as of a week ago, I’m thinking now to do an e-bike trip starting from home and heading out into the countryside for a few days. At some point when it feels safe anyway.

    • @TwoWheelCruise
      @TwoWheelCruise  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Two Wheel Cruise I’m glad I have a licence so I have the option to rent a car if I want to. But ownership doesn’t feel worth it any more. And it means you can get the right sized car for that particular use.

    • @TwoWheelCruise

    • @christill
      @christill 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Two Wheel Cruise I would use it right now to go to places you want to go and ride so you don’t have to use the train. And then once you’re working you could get rid of it if you can bike commute. And then in future public transport or car rental will be more appealing for bike trips once the virus is hopefully gone.

      @@TwoWheelCruise I do something similar. I take wheels and seatpost out put them in trunk. The frameset goes in the back wrapped in a king size sheet. It's not elegant but it works and I've done it for years with rental cars.

    I'm an avid biker, but I frequently find 'bike culture' so weird; what's wrong with getting a little grease on you?? It doesn't happen often, but if it does, I just consider it part of getting close to the machine, which is good with me - it's a form of bonding, lol. a badge of courage, even!

    Would it be possible to store the frames sideways for those of us driving sedans? Or would the chain fall off and become a problem?

    Hi from Hamamatsu.
    Kuriga-take in Shizuoka has nice view of mt.Fuji and the ocean with huge tea plantation around.
    crazy steep crime waits before top of the mountain but many cyclists go up there for the view.

    (Actually winter is the best season because air is crystal clear and mf.Fuji will be covered with snow.)
