      Hello, when I first made this documentary, it was just for a small class project, so the narration was fairly poor and playing to a small group. I plan making a more professional revised edition soon, and I can confidentially say that reference will be removed! I never intended this to turn into a video with 800K views.

    Creator here, for anyone who hasn't seen it, I would highly recommend Unsere Mütter, Unsere Väter, a great German mini-series about the German experience of WW2. It's called Generation War in English. Not obviously related to Irishmen fighting for Germany, but a few people have said this would make a good movie - this would be a good blueprint for how it could be done. Thanks to everyone who watched my video, it was created when I was in college, someday I'd like to do a proper updated version with better audio and video, this was hastily created for a classroom project while I was doing a Masters. I also plan to create a video series on TH-cam in the near future on various topics covering the German armed forces during WW2.

      Guy Sajer is a bullshitter. He used stories he heard from other men and wove them into a book. A lot of the things he writes don't match up with records (especially dates&units etc) for a simple reason: He wasn't there for them, he only heard them 2nd or 3rd hand.

    • @youtubemodsaresnowflakelef7692
      @youtubemodsaresnowflakelef7692 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That being said Frenchmen fighting alongside Germany weren't that much of a rarity. France's war hero & foremost soldier at the start of WW2, Joseph Darnand (**), was among the first to collaborate.
      He had been a right winger in the interwar period, and blamed France's defeat (amongst other things) on how France (just as it had been in Germany, Spain, Italy, and many other countries, albeit to a somewhat lesser degree) had been fractured for years and years by polarizing politics with left wing radicals agitating, striking, rioting, street battles, etc.
      How it had been a succession of weak left wing governments, that had left France unprepared to face the war, and who were quick to give up.
      He was captured during the Battle of France in June 1940, but he managed to escape rather quickly and fled to Nice in the unoccupied zone ("Vichy France"). There he helped set up the "Service d'Ordre Legionnaire", a collaborationist militia, which in 1943 became the "Milice (Francaise)" aka the (french) militia, who fought along side German troops against the Commie Maquis and other partisans.
      It was also through his help, that the Germans set up the LVF (Legion des Volontaires Francais [contre le bolchevisme) aka the "French Volunteer Legion (against bolshevism)", a unit composed of (ethnic) Frenchmen (since ie Elsaß/Alsace & Lothringen/Lorraine Germans were simply drafted into the Wehrmacht) who enlisted from July 8th 1941 (~2 weeks or 15 days after the start of Operation Barbarossa) onwards & fought in the Heer (the Army branch of the Wehrmacht.. contrary to popular belief Wehrmacht = all armed forces aka Kriegsmarine/Navy, Luftwaffe/Airforce, Heer/Army AND Waffen-SS [although more independent than the Heer], NOT just the army) against the Red Army.
      Later on there was a Waffen SS volunteer brigade formed, which later on became the 33rd Waffen SS Grenadier Division "Charlemagne". After Army Group North was pushed into Memel/East Prussia a lot of the 33rd Charlemagne were trapped in Kolberg, but managed to be taken out via ships, and from that point on they started merging the LVF into the Charlemagne.
      So while I strongly disagree with the whole (but it is law in Germany...) "SS = criminal organization; therefore all Waffen SS soldiers = essentially criminals" + "waffen SS = automatically a Nazi" narratives, this should show that many a man never voluntarily entered the Waffen SS, especially from 1943 onwards. Many of the foreign volunteers, who enlisted to fight against Communism, were never asked or given a choice.. Many of these units were initially part of the Heer, but then were simply handed over to the Waffen SS (happened to the Belgians this way also, where ie the Walloon (French speaking Belgians, there was also a Flemish [Dutch speaking] Belgian volunteer Legion) Belgian Volunteer Legion was initially part of an army infantry division, but later became a Waffen SS brigade and then the Waffen SS Division "Wallonie".
      And even many Germans (esp. "Volksdeutsche" aka ethnic Germans from Eastern Europe & the Balkans) were also simply drafted into the Waffen SS, once it was no longer volunteers only. Not to mention that many simply did it, because 3 year conscription was mandatory anyway, and they figured better to be in a more elite unit with better equipment, training, etc. than to be in any run of the mill unit + you had much better chances of getting a government job (ie clerk at any local authority/council/whatever) after your service, when it was still peace time...
      People fail to understand, that many of those drafted in the late 30s had been teenagers when Hitler came to power, and they grew up sometimes witnessing extreme violence by Communists and how it was the Nazis who cleaned that rabble up (***) and then indoctrinated them for years and years while they were still impressionable.
      Anyway... if you want to read good books by foreign volunteers, let me know and I can give you a list (I have a whole library of WW2 books, a mixture of books written by historians & accounts of soldiers+officers, including foreigners fighting for Germany). Guy Sajer isn't one of those. Yes, the book isn't too bad, but when you know it's a bunch of stories mashed together + some lies/exaggerations, then it's just meh.
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Asterixes:
      ** Joseph Darnand fought in WW1 and was a war hero during that war, and on the outbreak of WW2 enlisted again and was commissioned as an officer this time; he lead several commando raids into Germany during the "phony war"
      *** Contrary to popular belief the athmosphere of political violence in Germany was NOT started by the Nazis, as the Communists were doing it near constantly since 1918 until the mid 30s, and they were launching armed uprisings/seizing cities&counties even, launching riots and even outright street battles were people were shot, stabbed and beaten to death all the time, all over Germany and LONG before Hitler and the NSDAP were even a thing, let alone relevant anywhere outside of Munich & Bavaria.
      Ie one book I read by a Waffen SS volunteer describes one of his earliest childhood memories, where a funeral procession is violently attacked by a mob of Communists and people were getting beaten half to death and even killed. He was about 4 or 5 years old when it happened. That must have been traumatic, so experiences like that + growing up in a system where you're indoctrinated and unlike today don't have outside information, internet, etc didn't help matters.. so easy to judge with the benefit of hindsight + not growing up like that..

    My late dad ( a Scouser) while a British POW in Munich,1941, told me a story about the Irish POW's in Stalag 7A. One day all the Irish were taken away and returned 3 months later. Eager to know what happened the Irish told of being taken to Berlin and housed in big fancy Hotels with the best food they had eaten in their lives. Very different from their life growing up. The were taken to the Opera, Theater shows, orchestral concerts, dance halls, cinema films and bear halls. Finally they were taken to a camp and asked to join the Germany Army to fight the British. They all declined and it was straight back to hard work and poor food in Munich.

    Hello guys - thanks to everyone who viewed, liked, subscribed over the past few years.
    I've been away for several years, but I'm back now and plan to regularly upload videos. Most will be focused on the Eastern Front, which I feel is generally under-appreciated, not only in a historical sense, but also mainstream TH-cam. I've uploaded a few videos in the past few weeks and more will be forthcoming, so please have a look and leave your comments. Going forward, a lot of my videos will be focused on the Eastern Front, which I feel is under-appreciated in the wider picture of historical coverage.
    I will also be making an expanded, updated version of "The Irishmen who Fought for the Waffen SS" shortly. I'm also open to any suggestions or ideas people have.
    I'm sure many of you are familiar with "Mark Felton Productions" - if not, please check it out. An absolutely magnificent channel on the lesser known and more niche topics of the war.

      Not all of the Irishmen who fought with the Allies were harshly treated. A small percentage known as the 'deserters' were. These were men who deserted the Irish Army and joined the British Army when an invasion of Ireland by the Germans or even the British was possible.

    • @Kaiserbill99
      @Kaiserbill99 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@benitolonard4441 Which begs the question as to how on earth Ireland would defend itself from either the Germans or the British with two machine guns, a couple of pitch forks, and a bath tub on wheels for a tank. Desertions from the Irish army were a bit of an irrelevance.
      Ireland in reality rather hid behind Britain during WW2. Its independence meant nothing as the Germans were no respecters of neutrality. Ask Belgium. The Royal Navy guaranteed Irish independence. Rather ironic but true all the same. Ireland then went on to deny Jewish refugees, including orphans, refuge and sheltered some prominent Nazi war criminals. Not a proud period of history for Ireland.

    • @benitolonard4441

      By the way what PROMINENT Nazi criminals do you refer to?

    • @Kaiserbill99
      @Kaiserbill99 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@benitolonard4441 Well Belgium was neutral as was Ireland. You overlook the fact that if Britain had folded after the capitulation of France, which at the time looked probable, then Ireland would have been overrun in a heart beat. Therefore Ireland's neutrality and independence from German invasion held only as long as Britain remained in the war.
      In terms of Nazis sheltered after the war the most high profile was of course Skorzeny but an article in Irish Central News in 2016 states: "He (Skorzeny) was not the only high-profile Nazi to sojourn in Ireland. Albert Folens and Helmut Clissman also came to Ireland. The 2007 RTE documentary “In Hidden History: Ireland's Nazis” estimates that between 100 and 200 Nazis moved to Ireland. It’s believed that Ireland’s anti-British sentiment led to the war criminals receiving a warmer welcome than they ought to have."
      Re Refusing Jewish refugees an article from Israel Times : "On July 9, 1943, newly-elected member of the Irish parliament Oliver Flanagan rose to make his maiden speech.
      “There is one thing that Germany did and that was to rout the Jews out of their country,” he declared, saying that Ireland should follow suit. “They crucified our savior 1,900 years ago and they are crucifying us every day of the week.” Shortly after that now notorious speech, Flanagan was on his feet again in the Dail, questioning the Irish prime minister on plans for the country to take in 500 Jewish children from France. Under pressure, Éamon de Valera denied that the children were Jewish. Flanagan’s intervention, however, had the desired effect and the political row he had helped to stoke ensured that Ireland ultimately opted to leave the children to their fate.....Flanagan went on to serve his constituents for a further four decades increasing his majority"
      Ireland unfortunately found itself on the wrong side of history during and after WW2. Its self indulgent neutrality contrasted with Britain's heroic struggle against the greatest tyranny the world, or at least Europe, has known. De Valera's petty mindedness and ability to "put his foot in it" re the infamous telegram upon Hitler's death contrasted with Churchill's elevation to historical greatness and reverence. Britain's acceptance of Jewish refugees contrasted with Ireland's reluctance; fueled by Anglophobia and innate Catholic anti-semitism.
      You do really need to read more. Bit out of your depth I fear.

In many ways the waffen ss is the prime example of a multi ethnic multinational para military force.. and as such the foundation of NATO also co created by former ss and wehrmacht generals.

      This too is a false narrative, however even with it the Soviets still had the help of the United States and as such is an entirely irrelevant argument.
      You might as well say that without the SS the Germans would've been doubly corked, regardless of whether it's true they had the SS.
      Also *wouldn't have had* , the Soviet Union doesn't exist anymore.
      @Mr.OhYeahYeah
