Ep3s run slightly rich out of the factory so responds well to air filters even a budget one on a cold winter's day.
Clean the cone cotton air filter with the air filter cleaning kit and if there is no recorded service history a major service will be good then take the EP3 to go on the dyno again with the fuel cleaner poured in the fuel tank first

@@Synept it's got a catback exhaust and that absolutely wank air filter, thats literally it. Baffled sump too but it doesn't make a difference to performance, although it testifies to it's service history, the pickup pipe is spotless.

I've owned 4 ep3's now and all 4 have been great cars and I never had a problem with any of them. I've had 2 black, a grey and a red
My old ep3 also made consistent 214’s in a dyno with just a tegiwa intake and catback. Had that car nearly 7 years and it never let me down once and i drive that thing hard 99% of the time 😄
@Ikhlas 100k is nothing on these engines if they have been well maintained and looked after. Making sure you get one with a full service history and tons of receipts is a must with these cars. Try and look for one thats as close to standard as possible.

@@DimoS... yes mate the ep3 was known for crunching the gears and all round box problems but I've owned 4 of them and I never had an issue with any of them. I owned 2 black, 1 grey and a red
@Hamza watched your video bruv and immediately felt like taking my EP3 out for late night VTEC blast. I too have a nighthawk black Premier. The K20 engine is a masterpiece.
Wish you were doing a built NA build instead of turbo'd. Keep it true to what this type r is all about

To be fair I’ve always been and always will be a VW fanboy. But you’ve got to appreciate some of these Hondas.
In the end my car buying came down to a new type r or a Seat Leon Cupra/ Golf R.
Did get the Seat because I needed an auto for daily use. Still look at those type r s whenever I see one.

MAHAMED Fair enough. Never tried one tbh but do hear good things about them. I know some of the new VAG stuff isn’t as reliable as it used to be. But I do like some of the older stuff VW made. We’ve had a MK4 Golf for the past 17 years.

As a Honda lover I like some of them vw's too. Vr6, corrado's, turbo, NA, R32, scirocco, Golf 2 Rally and so on. Here in Europe we have a lot Honda, vw's doing quick hillclimbs.

Not hating but enjoying it for what it is and everyone getting along! I do like some of these shape Civic Type Rs And also the new shape ones looks quite nice. The older accord looks quite interesting too. I have to admit I don’t know an awful lot about Honda but hopefully in time I might one day own one. I do like the idea when I build up some years experience on my MK4 GTI.
I’ve had my EP3 Type R for 6 years now. I know there’s much faster and better cars out there but they just don’t sound as good when you’ve got the VTEC screaming

It probably isn’t the air filter that’s increased the bhp on this, it’s more likely going to be the exhaust, these EP3’s are very restricted throughout the whole exhaust, first mod I did on mine was a 4-2-1 manifold with a decat pipe, makes a hell of a difference.
Did you get hondata? They're supposed to run lean when de-catted on stock ecu.
@@BOB-gu5qf they are driveable and only run a bit lean, but it runs like crap without a remap
Mine runs spot on, noticed a difference in fuel consumption but overall it’s worth having a 4-2-1 with a decat pipe.

When these EP3s Type Rs came out in 2001 they were top of the hot hatch pile just like the current FK8. Only with 120 less hp! They absolutely pissed all over the Golf GTIs of the era. Even the 3.2 v6 Golf R32 of the time was not enough to really challenge one.
but the fk8 isnt on top of the pile!!
Good figures👍 healthy engine you got there. Before you boost it get chain and tensioner changed if it hasnt been done previously. Log manifold and gt30 around 300-350hp will be fun in that ep3 you will love it lol. Had the same set up with sidewinder in my old eg9 4door k20, was so fun to drive. Stock k20s love the gt30. Keep up the good work

Why does proper VTEC need a turbo? I have -03 and -19 Type R Civics, and really the enjoyment comes from the raw original VTEC. The -19 is pure luxury car, but has lost the thrill of proper VTEC.

You have a timing chain rattle on a cold start bro, but it's expected with the mileage. You'll need to replace the chain as soon as possible though. Good luck
I'm in the middle of fitting some stock EP3-R silver wheels onto my 4-lug Civic right now. I got the front left wheel on. Started with the front right, but, my CV axle was rust welded into the hub so it wasn't salvagable, new CV axle on order. UGGGHHH!!
I'm using base model Acura Integra knuckles-hubs, speed sensors. Acura Integra Type-S brakes. Hardrace chassis bushings. Can't wait to have it back in one piece.
My old EP3 was totally standard apart from being run on v-power all the time and it made 216.7hp at TDi North.
I've been told you need to subtract 10bhp from that dyno. Still good.
that black S3 is pushing 600 now i believe. Niki was tuning it whilst i was waiting for my GTI and made 560 on a baby pull....
My old ep3 had the cam chain changed by honda hq at 163k as it felt a bit flat. That sorted It. My car was standard and dynoed at aldon automotive at 169k. It made 198bhp at the flywheel.

Great video man...I've got a jdm ep3, cold air intake, Mugen twinloop catback, I'm very satisfied with it...if anything Honda offers the fun factor in spades like you can't get on most turbos

It is good to see German fans having a go of a Honda for the first time and it putting a smile on their face you can't deny how much fun Type Rs are to drive
Definitely stock ECU, there is a big dip in the torque curve just before vtec engages. Get yourself Kpro and a new map and you will gain 30 BHP in the mid range and remove this dip

That dip is meant to give you the illusion of the VTEC kicking in. when it gets a decent map there should just be a smooth straight line
TR Hamza they all dip. Even the B16’s. I put a Supersprint 421 manifold on my old Civic Jordan and it gave me decent midrange pre-VTEC. So much so that I lost the VTEC kick as it remove the dip before VTEC

Borrowed a mates FN2 for a week and entering the Vtec was so addictive. The revs go up and you can see the fuel gauge go down!

My old ep3 had a cat back and a induction kit and made 213bhp. Maybe the qouted stock figure is low. Makes me want another one after hearing watching these vids.

Impressive power over std with just Breathing mods, I would also add that the K20 is the best NA 4 cylinder engine for the 20 year's 👍🏼😎
The EP3 type R is the jack Russell of the hot hatch world 🐶 It's small & not that powerful, but what it lacks in power it makes up for in absolute insane!! personality.
Thats really interesting... wonder what mine makes seeing as its also stock pretty much.
Some have reported theirs to start increasing in power slightly after the 100k mark lol
siksreik mine made 196bhp on a dyno, bog standard. It wasnt long after I found out the timing chain had a slight stretch. Thats now sorted and it easy feels over 200 brake now. Id say around 210-15.

A friend of mine had one of these brand new in 2002 and back then it felt so fast

The loss of torque mid-range will be more pronounced with that air filter!😳 Standard Airbox with a k&n drop in or a Tegiwa (iffy quality) if you want to keep the noise. Both will be better than an open filter

Decent figures from basically standard. Get the turbo on there, don't forget an LSD.

If it’s 213bhp, check the timing chain, it will be stretched and is why the high mile cars make a lot more power, timing is better with a stretched chain which sounds odd but is true , just make sure it’s not too stretched😉

Do you have any issues with the build quality in the interior though? My dads got a slightly older civic with lower miles (103k) and one or two of the dash vents keep falling to the down position if you move then pointing towards you. Bit annoying but mechanically it runs perfect.
Then again if that’s the only bad thing you can say about a car then your doing really well 😁😂
Once you get the black gti up and running would be interesting to get both the CTR and the GTI on a roll against one another.

That FK2 was much faster (ofcourse) but I prefer the simplicity of the EP3, and the sound. Can always make it faster too

I had a 2003 civic 1.6 for literally 2 months last year while my car was in the garage and at 75-80 on the motorway the oil would go from top to bottom mark in 100 miles 😳 used a disgusting amount of oil, gearbox was all over the place as well, had 130k miles on it.
I know it's not a type r but I thought the Honda would be reliable

Man, you should get rid of that hot ait intake, go back to the stock one, you should get a more consistent power under real street driving conditions. Although you do lose alot of that beautiful induction noises.

It is tuned. How do i know it? The rev limiters "bababababa" is waaay to fast. An original K20 wil do "baabaabaabaabaa"... hope you know what i mean. Just watch stock EP3s hittimg the limiter and you will clearly hear the difference 😉

These motors can gain up to 20hp from just an intake and exhaust. You can beat on those Honda motors all day long and they’ll take it and want more,lol!!
