  • By definition it's not often we come across once in a generation guitarists. Shawn Lane and Allan Holdsworth were probably the most notable. Now there is Matteo Mancuso. Leaving pro players agast with his incredible playing style, more versatile than a swiss army knife and with phrasing that would melt a stone cold heart.
In this video we look at some reactions to Matteo's playing as well as some of his best clips. The guy is frighteningly good. His new album "Moonlight" is out with his band DriftLab, check it out below:

Mateo's right hand is flamenco-style, and on electric, he also mutes unwanted strings or string noise by muting them with his other fingers while playing with the picking fingers!! His note choices and horn-like intervals while improvising is something else, also!! The tone from his picking hand resembles the attack of a pick, while retaining the warmth of fingerstyle. Truly a one-of-a-kind, unique player in this day and age!!

As an aficionado of good guitar playing and student of music theory and composition at university, I am astonished by this amazing young and bright talent. I was totally floored back in 1971 when I discovered British guitar phenom John McLaughlin (after being initially introduced to Page, Beck, Clapton and Hendrix), but after hearing this highlight reel of Matteo I’m back on the floor again and struggling to get back up to catch my breath! This young artist has nowhere to go but up, and there are few out there now who come close to his mastery over theory, fretboard knowledge, various styles, phrasing, acute sense of the music around him (pocket sense?) and most important, musicality. I hesitate to compare MM to anyone alive or passed, but I’m looking for some gravity and center here in trying understanding his unique approach to the instrument and idea execution: I start with Larry Carlton, probably one of the greatest masters of clean, melodic phrasing ever, and add Guthrie Govan for shear effortlessness, virtuosity and imagination. Surely with the Flamenco training MM has had he has now expanded the instrument to a full two-handed standard that few will be able to emulate. My question: has MM begun to explore world music and other theories of music as McLaughlin has? I hope he will as I see music as a universal language for him to access and utilize with theories from this wider universe. It would almost be too much to ask for!
