I decided to try loosening the core from the fiber with my hands alone because I wanted to preserve the warm beige color of the fiber. It works! For someone who enjoys fiddly peeling tasks, it's kind of fun. I've processed two large hanks of unretted flax with my fingernails and have a fluffy supply of flaxen fiber to spin now. i did enjoy seeing your awesome skills in this video and the flax break is gorgeous!

Beautiful work once again. I teach 2nd graders in art each year about the wonders of flax...linen, linseed oil, linoleum...its really a miracle plant. The kids each paint a flax flower on linen using pigmented linseed oil that we press ourselves from seeds. This year i will show them your work❤

Hello, the "chaff"(?) that falls on the ground is great for the garden. You can seed carrots and put this over the soil, they will grow through it, it stops weeds and retains a lot of moisture so need to water so often.
We have something in common, making and building many parts and contraptions to try one small project. I bought a scythe at an antique shop. Now I’m halfway through making a treadle powered 150lb grinding wheel to use to restore the scythe. Which is fine, the curved handle I’m making for the scythe is still curing.

But you, who claim to be a Blacksmith, actually use a hand plane like a PRO! Your work, your space and all your knowledge is simply inspiring!

The thing about the use of wedges is it allows for variations...precision is not an essential...the wedge itself makes allowances...good laugh though. The elegance and simplicity of your products is always heartwarming... Seriously calming affect is a bye-product...WELL DONE.
A little woodworking tip: When you chisel out the first side of finger joint, if instead of chipping away the whole length you make a half-V shaped groove, then the ends are still level with the surface and act as support when doing the other side. Makes it a bit easier. I have thought that it would be cool to make a shirt or something starting with flax seeds. You would certainly see clothes in a different light.

I was able to visit a "living museum" of Spanish life in the ~1540s (to maybe 1670s?) in Florida and they had grown flax and demonstrated the entire process from breaking the flax and carding it through to spinning and sewing with it. As a kid I was fascinated at what they demonstrated and still am ~50-years later! What you are sharing with us has my complete attention and admiration of your multiple skills. :)

Great woodworking skills. The wood appeared to be a coniferous variety, it's more difficult to attain those crisp lines. The satisfaction of watching all parts being crafted rather than simply machined was fun.
Looking towards a 100% sustainable future, I think this is a key component. Cotton can only be grown in very warm climates, so what are Alaskans and Scandanavians to do? Enter flax so that northern peoples can produce fabric for their clothing without having to depend upon cotton. Today I learned a new word: retting. Thank you Torbjorn.
