About the 690 Adventure: The problem for people in countries with very stringent vehicle rules and inspections is, that to my knowledge there is currently NO EU street legal auxiliary tank available for the 690. The popular Rade Garage aux tank on top of that requires the removal of the air box and original filter, which makes the bike even more illegal to ride and voids factory warranty. The Rally Raid UK tanks are not available any longer. KTM Basel made a street legal tank kit but that came with quite a price tag. I went from owning a 650 V-strom to 640 Adv, ultimately picking a brand new CRF300L. Every one of those bikes has some form of multifunctionality and excellence in certain departments. Still, for the type of off-roading I do nowadays (and skill levels obviously), CRF300L really fits the bill. The underwhelming engine is its biggest flaw, and yes, I fondly remember the braaping of the 640. That bike remains a testament to the olden days and rally-made pieces that mortals can buy. Despite all the known ailments, KTM knows that their 690 is the flagship dual-sport bike, and as such enjoys vast support of aftermarket suppliers. People tend to fork out for the bike, plus half of its MSRP in these additions. And that's the main driving force behind their decisions. Not what few of us vocal commentators online want for lol
the super meteor, by virtue of being a cruiser, has a lot of braking power coming from both the front and the rear, which is why even the rear brake gets a two-pot caliper, rather than the typical single-pot caliper. Hence the single disk of the Super meteor, because they don't suffer from a lot of frontal dive (under braking), unlike most other formats. The Himalayan is gonna have a lot more dive in the front, and it's going to really need a lot more front braking power, especially with the MUCH heavier 650 mill, compared to the normal 450 mill.

The upgrade to this, should have been the 650R which was the king...and all they need to do was combine it ie estart, so close...and they would have won years ago.
@@vivianmorresey 650R as a dirt bike full of gas, went 302 lbs. Supposing Honda did everything needed to make it a real dual sport or ADV bike? It would be 400+ lbs. Honda goes for cheap steel and thick cheap parts, e start, etc. Ive parted 2 XR650R's, both had blown cranks that exploded the cases to bits. A DR650 has a MUCH bigger stouter crankshaft and cases. For a reason.
That wasn't adventurized. It was just a 701 with a fat tank. It was missing fairings and a windscreen, which is one of the primary features that distinguish an adventure bike from a dual sport. And all of the aftermarket fairing options are clunky, expensive and overengineered.
@@jakeviolet2195 disagree. For one there were 2 tanks not one, and the front tank did a good job serving as fairings. Yes it had short windscreen but windscreens are maintenance items and the one they had did a surprisingly good job keeping wind off. All you needed was a clip on for riding highways on rainy days.
@@BobSacamano-dy3wg yes when you ride off-pavement large barn door sized windshields don't fare well. They're also a safety hazard as they can come in contact with your throat or face, and that's why you usually don't see big windscreens on dirt-orientated bikes
@@BobSacamano-dy3wg a couple years ago there was a guy who won Dakar stage after having his nose broken by windshield. I guess he has no skills? 🤔 KTM is aware of this issue and takes it into consideration. If you look at 790/890 windscreen isn't that big. And yes if you ride to Starbucks the chances of breaking windscreen are minimal, but that's not what 701LR was about. That's the bike for big boys to take on the rides where 790 is too heavy, and 790 is a pretty capable mount
Hi seen what appears to be images of the 2025 new KTM 390 adventure or the enduro coming out of the USA, not such which or both models displayed, from site USA Motervibes. Please have a look seems from what I can glean from all the info I can get. It will have about 45hp, new frame much bigger motor, a lot more ground clearance, foot peg issue fixed, Rally styling. The site shows a vast array of colours, beautiful bike. Let me know thoughts! May be a red herring however!
the 640 adv (double front disks model) was as close to perfection as it gets, if it had a good engine and 10 more hp it would have been actually perfect.
I think the reason they dont make an ADV version of the 690 Enduro is because it would weigh almost as much as the 790 Adventure, but have like 30hp less power. Some people might want that, but probably not enough people to justify the r & d cost.
I think in the old days ktm adv bikes were based on rally racing and passion. Nowadays they are mostly based on profit. Still they are on top of the game. But i think the main reason we don't see a 690 adv is that they sell them at an expensive price anyway. A 690 adv would be less profitable, otherwise too expensive. They would also take market shares from their own 890/901 bikes. There's also a huge aftermarket for them so introducing it now would compete in price and performance with all that. Also, they have no real competition anyway. The AJP is a nice bike for sure but there aren't many out there.
Ive never seen an AJP, Ive never seen a dealer for the things. It may seem cool to be the only guy in town to have one but..............they still weigh over 400lbs. A 690 goes 350 lbs, which is plenty. Guys that own AJP's panic if someone says the things weigh over 400. On a real scale they do.
I definitely want to see KTM make a 690 adventure R with a tower and double the fuel capacity. It is exactly what I’m looking for, I just don’t want to have to modify it to that extent. I already have a 350 excf and it would be perfect. The expense of taking a new one and modifying it would be near the cost of a new 1200. The 690 is already pricey, could they just make a stock version for a little more and it would be great.
Ducati will make a 698 adventure. It will be sold out like original 790 adventure r was. Then ktm will realize error of canceling 701LR. 690 already has most of the adv electronics: cornering abs, adjustable traction control, throttle modes. An expensive TFT screen isn’t necessary.
It would be cool to see what/if they do anything dualsport or adv with it. Speaking of Italians, i'm sure that Beta could do wonders in this category if they wanted. But maybe they are happy in the hard enduro category, not having to deal with euro5 etc.
A Ducati ADV bike...................Ducati has 40 years or so less experience than KTM as far as building anything that goes on dirt. KTM would be building the 701LR today, if it had sold. But nobody bought them. The guys that didnt buy it go on begging for more of them. Factories have learned that begging for a certain bike is easy to do, 90% of the beggers dont want the bike. ABS and TC are impossible to ride hard off road with. The newer 690 has those things but they have to be turned off. Mine is much better with out that crap.
KTM should make the 500 less vibes and add abs/tc same as the 690/701 making a ~290lb adv/ds that is 50+lbs lighter then the 690/701 and capable of putting some miles on the tarmac between dirt fun. Many friends have the 690/701 and the 500exc. They trailer the 500 and ride the 690 for miles to the dirt. The 690/701 are fantastic but would be a lot better minus 50 lbs similar to the crf450rl.
Because the seat is like a tooth pick and the fuel system is a major problem for water dirt and servicing great race and super motard etc and very expensive trail bike l did love the balance front to back and the slipper clutch
KTM will be lucky if they suvive at all not to mention releasing new models. I'm hearing bad news about customer service, finances, and reliability issues.
Why haven't Yamaha updated the WR250R with the engine from the MT-03 like the WR350R? If the frame is too weak design new 350cc chassis eg. mini ADV T3, Dual Sport ´n´ Supermotard?
Euro 5 has choked the 690 single, unless its remapped or a fuel dongle added its gutless off the bottom. When you do add a dongle you get about 17km/ltr. I get that mileage out of my 1290. I have had three 690’s 2008,2016 & 2021. Moving on.
@@SupermotoCentral top ends not a problem, it’s the low end for adventure bikes, and I didn’t have piggybacked ecu, just a dongle from fuel torque, you get 23ltr/ltr , that’s some efficient throttle hand you got there.
@@SupermotoCentral therefore, my original statement stands, euro 5 has choked the large single and is gutless off the bottom, you’ve stated it yourself, you had to mod your 701 and spend more $$$ to get it to work efficiently. So it’s not bullshit, I got 17.5 klm/ltr with a fuel dongle, that’s a fact. What you get out of yours with a power commander is not relevent to the my statement.
I get 55mpg with a fuel dongle, the Cat/muffler has to go. Then the 690 has great bottom end and runs really well. 74HP stock is hardly choked for a single. 115mph can be done. Your 690 must have been very, very sick. A DR650/XR650L/KLR650 all make 35HP at most. THAT is choked.
@@bradsanders6954 did you read what I said, choked bottom end STOCK, runs good with a dongle. Bikes not sick, the dongle I chose was. Top end speed (which I have no problem with) is irrelevant in relation to offroad adventure riding.
It's hard to imagine why they'd build an adventure ready 690 when they have the 790 so competitively priced. Should they make a 500cc Adv bike? At KTM prices, no. Get CF Moto to build it and brand it KTM, then you have something.
Nice video thank you. Maybe you and other vloggers need to address the KTM camshaft issues so that more pressure would be put on them to seriously deal with this issue.
I just jumped on a 2023 GasGas ES700 brand new for $14900, only way I could justify the purchase. The RRP is up near $20k. Not worth the extra $5k most days.
Because KTM wanted to make more money selling KTM 790/890 advs. The aftermarket has plenty of high quality rally kits to upgrade the Enduro. Actually Husqvarna kind of tried adventuring the 701 with the LR but that was no success. Looked too goofy without a rally tower.
Im always amazed, at how much people will spend on "looks". They have never been to a rally much less ridden one, but they need their bike to look like a rally bike. Adding weight, complexity, and a crash can destroy all of it. Rally guys have full spare kits for the multi 1000 dollar rally towers etc.
Easy answer: because the 690 is single cylinder. Real “adventure” bikes are multi-cylinder. Doesn’t mean you can’t have an adventure on it - you can have an adventure on any bike. It’s just by definition the 690 is not an ‘adventure’ bike …
@@striple6752 that may be true, but how could there be an "official" definition anyway? There is no entity that has the power to make an "official" definition. However, my definition is the well known unofficial definition. Let's take the KTM 350 EXC-F for example. And there are a whole lot of bikes that are similar, such as the Husqvarna FE 350s, or Beta 350 RS. It would be nice if there is a category name to call them - and there is: Enduro (meaning higher performance) Dual Sport. On the other hand, there are a whole slew of bikes that the T7 is similar to, such as the KTM 890 Adventure, BMW F900, and Triumph 900 Rally Pro - AKA "adventure" bikes. So which group of bikes is the KTM 690 more like? The Enduro style Dual Sports? Or the "adventure" bikes? Clearly the KTM 690 is more like the Enduro style Dual Sports, and one of the primary factors that makes the 690 more like the enduro style dual sports is it's single cylinder. Words have meaning ... and that is useful for more clear conversations ... unless one tries to change the meaning of words ...
@@tecdive8045 for me an adventure bike per definition needs a fairing, 300+ km range , min. 20k maintenance intervals, 50+ hp, and decent carrying capacity. Therefore without mods the 690 isn’t an adventure bike for me as well
@@striple6752Having both in my garage, a 690 Enduro and BMW 1200GS. 690 is 80/20 with 80% being on dirt. The BMW is 20/80 with 20% on the dirt. Riding the 690 on the Highway takes a toll on you with being blown around by the wind. It’s more at home on the trails. The BMW I can ride all day on the highway with lots of cargo, but on the dirt it can be very heavy and cumbersome. My opinion, the 690 is not an Adventure Bike, it’s meant to get you to the trails legally.
@@Easyrecliner yes depends on the rider as well. I am doing long trips through the alps with my street triple without any wind protection and that isn’t a problem for me doing a 2k km round trip from Switzerland to Italy and back 😅 a 690 with a fairing wound be an improvement for my comfort, but have to check the engine vibrations first 😅
All of the aftermarket fairing and tank kits to "adventurize" the 690 are poorly designed, overengineered and rediculously expensive. Who wants to spend thousands of dollars on top of an already expensive dual sport just for longer range and wind protection? The CRF300L comes in enduro and adventure versions from the factory and the price differential is not thousands - it's only a few hundred bucks. The 640 came in enduro and adventure (and supermoto) and so will the upcoming 390. Why not the 690? The idea that the 690 is a "blank slate" to customize doesn't really work considering it's high price and complexity. Something like a DR650 is a blank slate bike. It's cheap and easy to modify with a plethora of aftermarket parts available. The 690 Enduro is not a best-seller as-is. It is KTM'S red-headed stepchild because it lives in this wonky no-mans land of being too big, complex and expensive for an enduro and too sparse for an adventure bike. If KTM had offered an adventure version of the 690 alongside the enduro, I'll bet it would have outsold it three to one. And it would have only cost them a couple months of R&D and a few pounds of plastic.
There are more of the latest version 690's out there than you think. They are MUCH better bikes than the previous version. A CRF250L or a 300L? Are simply too slow, too heavy. Even beginners tire of screaming the guts out of them. They dont weigh much less than a 690. KTM offered the ADV version of the 701. It didnt sell.
690/701 yes but Would not waste my $ on ANY ktm parallel twin engine bike due to huge came fails with piss poor support from ktm about the serious situation. now ktm laid off workers turned to china more its there final nail in there coffin,

Honda XR650L just needs about 20hp more and it would be a great dual sports/Adventure bike
For a reason.
.. and there was an Adventurized version of 690: 701LR. You can still build one out of OEM parts
KTM is aware of this issue and takes it into consideration. If you look at 790/890 windscreen isn't that big.
And yes if you ride to Starbucks the chances of breaking windscreen are minimal, but that's not what 701LR was about. That's the bike for big boys to take on the rides where 790 is too heavy, and 790 is a pretty capable mount
If those had sold well, the LR would still be on the dealer floor.
People beg for stuff but are just spit balling. Most dont buy what they beg for.
"if it had a good engine" Virtually every 640 I have seen for sale has a "new engine, low miles" Or "ran when parked, electrical trouble forces sale"
Cancelling the 701LR was a major disappointment 😔
A KTM 690 bike with a twin engine from the Cfmoto 450
Moving on.
Bullshit! My 701 with dongle and pc5 with more fuel added gets 23km a liter and that's with a lot of high speed riding.
Covered the camshaft wear in last months ADV News 👍
690 has no camshaft issue. So its a tough thing to fix.
I notice its hard to stay on subject on these posts.
Bajaj and ktm are developing 650 in india.
Ooh interesting 🤨
I just jumped on a 2023 GasGas ES700 brand new for $14900, only way I could justify the purchase. The RRP is up near $20k. Not worth the extra $5k most days.
Dealers are marking 690's down 2K or more if you look around. I bought a 21 with tons of extras and low miles for 10K.
If KTM made the 690R into an ADV bike? It would be a 400 +lb ADV bike.
Arent there enough heavy ADV bikes already? Does every bike have to be ADV?
Easy answer: because the 690 is single cylinder. Real “adventure” bikes are multi-cylinder. Doesn’t mean you can’t have an adventure on it - you can have an adventure on any bike. It’s just by definition the 690 is not an ‘adventure’ bike …
There is no such official definition

Have u ever tried the CCM gp 450 ?

@@chroniclesofsolid that's some round trip . They are a great bike
Terrible reliability and anyway long out of production. Nowadays CCM only make a range of poser bikes using the old SWM engine.
Gota keep on keepin on. I do at 69. It keeps me going. Think young damn sure may not feel it but stay after it
All of the aftermarket fairing and tank kits to "adventurize" the 690 are poorly designed, overengineered and rediculously expensive.
It didnt sell.
it's all about the monney, money, money!
Don't search much further....
the 690 is NOT a thumper... its a revver... sadly
690/701 yes but Would not waste my $ on ANY ktm parallel twin engine bike due to huge came fails with piss poor support from ktm about the serious situation.
