Ktm has made the camshaft lobes a subscription service. The OEM ones come with 5,000 miles of service, and then begin reducing power by automatically reducing lift and duration. If you'd like reinvigorate your engine, you can subscribe to the annual camshaft replacement plan.
Yeah Fu@K KTM. My 20 890 dukeR blew up at 8400 miles. It was past the 2 year mark (covid cut into my riding) So they said "so sad, to bad" I had 2 groved cam lobes, and one of my followers broke in two, snapping my cam chain, top end was shot. the bike was a total loss. Lucky for me, I had a third party extended warranty that cashed me out, but a about 2K below market value. I was happy to get that. So I bought a Yamaha, no more KTM for me.
As a current KTM 690 owner and previously owned a 1050. Wonderful bikes to ride, currently looking at upgrading, would love the 890 but I won’t due to all the engine issues. KTM really need to get their act together and match quality of components with the way they ride.
I have been a fan of KTM performance and ride characteristics for many years, but lost confidence in their quality assurance and spotty customer service. No KTM products in the garage after almost 20 years of having 1 or 2. Find myself appreciating Japanese quality and engineering.
The old 80s Honda Xl600/650/700 Transalp was never a lightweight. They sold like hotcakes and been everywhere with many RTW trips. Bombproof. The "adventure" market is getting a bit broad, but there is always room for the "everyday man" all-rounder. The 650 platform has proved its worth already.
Keep Taking Money. I had a 990 Adventure. KTM acknowledged a claim for a selector plate in the gear box failing in the middle of no where. Oh, they don’t cover oil, filters, seals or labour for those bits or my lost time. Rode brilliantly when it worked but I had so many issues I just gave up. KTM are terrible to deal with and I cannot trust their products to do anything but fail. Honda CRF 1100l. Zero issues and I trust it.
I’m not sure I’d ever buy a KTM after this debacle. Things go wrong from time to time for all manufactures but it’s the way it’s dealt with says a lot.
Hey solid. I've a 701 enduro, it's amazing. What I think we all need is a 450 enduro r or enduro rally. Something with a subframe that we can build a proper adv from. Something legitimately light 120/130kg with great suspension. Honestly, I'd pay a premium for a light premium adv bike. I'm not sure we need more 701 /690 competition, they're already too powerful and too heavy for your average biker... well, me anyway. I can't extract all the power from the bike, thats all wasted. The service intervals are perfect, but I rekon, we need a bike with 50hp that is about 120kg ... that's the sweet spot. Cheers.
@btta88 its a good shout..kyb suspension, 130kg, ...however, Only 35 or 37 horses unfortunately and the 7.2L fuel tank would have to go. I'd settle for 47hp, I think that's the most an a2 licence can have.. that'd be fine, then our younger brothers could ride it too. An adv for all people.
@@everydaybiker hi Jim, it depends where you are. SWM RS500R comes with legal 35 hp but can be easily tuned up to 52 (don’t know if it still legal though). 2022 KTM 890 R bought from new, lots of qc issues, engine vibrates so badly past 6k that the motto is ready to slow. Bad starts, TFT completely clouding up at the sign of any mosture in the air, part never replaced by KTM. At 11k km the engine sounds like junk, it is obvious that this engine wont last, bike still under extended warranty, KTM says they will inspect the cams but at my own cost. my KTM 1090 R was solid, my 890R ain't. we all agree that the 890 is a very capable bike, the lower center of gravity a game changer, but im absolutely and totally done with the brand and the way they are dealing with a massive design failure of the paralel engines and the significant deterioration in overall quality control. thats my 2 cents
Could someone explain to me, in this era of modular bikes, how the 690 Enduro R has been around since 2008, and KTM never had the bright idea to design a fairing and slightly larger gas tank to make an adventure version like they did with the 640? How many iterations of their other adventure bikes have came and went in the last 16 years, while they stubbornly avoid this low-hanging fruit?
Probably because they keep selling ktm 690s for a lot of money and people do their own adventurising of the bike. As far as ktm is concerned, they keep selling the thing as is, so why bother changing it? I agree, of course, that it would make a fantastic dedicated offroad adventure platform, but I can also see why ktm wouldn't bother.
Himalayan 650/750/850 is definitely happening (probably a 650). Test mules have been recently seen, with what seems to be a similar engine, the test bike also had dual front discs.
Brilliant comment, "would you want to take a Ducati there? ".... Err, yes, well, having been "there" and also, by chance, owned a couple of Ducatis (much as I love them), I would in the interest of self-preservation, have to mull carefully over that one!
The shot at 3:50 is giving me flashbacks. I was going up that hill in the background on my first street bike ('82 Yamaha Seca 550) when the rear brake applied itself, due to some creative "maintenance" by the PO. This was about midnight, I got over the hill and was able to get the bike to a gas station. Hitchhiked home, picked up the bike a couple days later and found the hub/brake drum had melted and welded itself together. Have to say that CSC 125 looks like a hoot, I may get one if the price is right.
Regarding the KTM cam problem; this has shades of the cam wear problem had with the early V65 engines back in the early 80's and the flat tappet problems Moto Guzzi had with their 1200 engines around 2012. I would think you are right about ducati. It would sell like hotcakes for a lightweight adv bike. Yes Ducati has had issues in the past with electronic issues. But for the most part, not many issues anymore. I think that if they did a light weight desert X like you said. I think the 698 is one of, if not the top IMO is the sexiest bike to date. It stated that any who feel they have this issue should take their bike to an authorized dealer and if there is a problem with the cam lobes that KTM will be replacing it at their cost - not the customer.
KTM is digging a hole on this one…likely their best answer is “a whole new engine not sharing previous architecture” being included shortly on new models. The KTM double speak, if true are basically saying everything was built right using poor geometry, the wider rocker is to lower point load and buy time, likely not “fixing” anything long term. Ha! Interesting to see how my rendition of the potential Ducati 698 Mono dual-sport/enduro has started making rounds :D Though, having now owned the 698 Mono for a short while, they do have a number of issues to sort out before they could put that nice little engine into anything meant to be ridden for more that 20 minutes.. Currently it is just way too raw and buzzy and annoying that would not be good for much anything other than a track.
The dealer here has taken them off the showroom floor because of all the issues the these KTM while they struggle Royal Enfield seems to be bucking the trend and grabbing the market. I tested the new 450 and really liked it however it’s a bit heavy and I did some testing at the shop where the dropped it on a carpet and I lifted it up a few times and pushed it around and I struggled after a few times. I still like the Kawasaki x300 versys as the Goto mini adventure
Regarding the KTM Cam issue, I zoomed into the announcement you posted and it clearly says, please visit your KTM dealer if you have an issue and if cams are found to be damaged, they will be replaced by KTM, with the cost borne by KTM. Cheers
Calling it conversations about Desert X is bit too optimistic. There was almost nobody mentioning it before, so I made that picture in 30 min in Gimp and I'm really happy you used it, so now we can have some real conversations about 698 Desert X :D I think with that power, weight and 15k service interval it would be great lightweight adventure bike for travelling
Whoever buys a Ducati for hard enduro, rally, or any motocross event has lost their mind. Financially, you won't recover from breaking things apart. Clear pass for me. 😂
Hey, Solid can you make a video on "Why do manufacturers no longer put a kick starter on modern day two wheelers (motorcycles)" ?? I miss them, they make starting a bike so damn easy when your battery dead.
No kidding, I'd happily pay extra for a kickstarter and the ability for the bike to run without a battery. It seems pretty clear the manufacturers don't understand the dual sport audience at all.
@@Kickaha83 We used to do it on 600cc and some even on old Harley's like 74ci = 1200+cc , and Why would they design the electronics in such way tharu it would come in the way of implementing kick starter ??
@@unknowncommonman If the battery is flat kicking it won't normally turn the motor over long enough to generate enough voltage for things like the fuel pump on injected bikes
Ducati should definitely go after KTM with their big single. Ducati is also a "premium" (i.e. expensive) brand, so they will be able to charge high prices, and competing with KTM means they are not going to be perceived as less reliable... That RE ADV bike also seems like a good idea, sort of, but the ONLY thing that will make them more desirable than the CF Moto options is that they are not Chinese. That is not nothing, but outside of the US and down under, it may not be enough. RE should stick to improving the 450. That CSC will struggle to be cheap enough compared to the already cheeeeeep Honda. The Honda is perfect affordable transportation for a high school kid. Freedom, confidence inspiring, and no worries about Junior killing someone while texting... Good to hear you are well enough to make a video at least. Cheers!
Excellent content Solid!! Had my interest all the way through!! I think the Honda CB125f needs a factory adventure kit as an added option. Cheers for the entertainment.
I can see Ducati cranking out dual sport and I'm there for it. I love my DR650 but damn a 77hp 350lb'ish, please Lord keep it under 350, Ducati dual sport would be very very nice.
I still remember seeing the RE 650 lump in person. No wonder people have increased displacement kits. An urban Himmy Dakar might work. The Ducati might have the edge on valve control and maybe heat control. The Ducati puts the heater where they usually do. The KTM has sorted vibration.
Has there ever been a company that has moved its production (or parts of it) to China in order to increase quality? No, only profit can be increased here. Of course, to the detriment of quality. I'm wounded that so many customers are buying this crap. A Chinese motorcycle, at a Chinese price, OK. But a Chinese motorcycle with a European name, at a European price? Why do people buy something like this?
100%. I was looking at my next bike being a 890 or 901. Between the usual and ongoing quality control issues, the emerging cam shaft issue and selling out to China they are off the table and I'm not buying KTM/Husky until and unless they sort their shit and their ethics out.
The thing is that components are already being sourced from China and other areas where costs are lower. These days your engine might be built in Asia, then slotted in to the frame (also fabricated in Asia) in XYZ factory. You'd have to dig deep through the export documentation to gain any idea of where the components were sourced.
I think the smarter move is to Indian manufacturing which is a better value... almost as inexpensive as Chinese manufacturing and almost the quality as Japanese or German manufacturing.
As a 701 owner, I hope Duc makes a 698 enduro, and a mini-desertX. I don't make the kind of money to own a Duc and ride it the way I'd want to. But I hope them making one would pressure KTM/Husky to make a 690 Rally or something like that.
Not sure if the Wolf 125 will make it to the EU, but given the price of 40 year old C90s, they would probably sell well. I could even get one on my boat instead of an electric bike with limited range.
I've been waiting for a new RE Scrambler..... but the 650 interceptor engine wasn't what I was hoping for to be honest. I was hoping to see the 450 LC single used in a Scrambler aesthetic like they've done with the Geurilla. I'm still likely to go with the Fantic 500 if this is the next RE Scrambler or if I can spring for the 700 I'd go that if there's a rally variant.
The Tenere platform is too heavy and underpowered for a half decent SM. But Yamaha could at least give the Ten radially mounted calipers which would give people an easier time of making the 700 more road focused.
10:50 *Did you even read what KTM wrote????* They clearly say that if the camshafts are found to be faulty, they will be replaced by KTM, at no cost, under the goodwill scheme (maybe out of warranty too).
was that seriously the most representative photo that you could find of ktm 7/890 worn cams? your choice of worn cams photo makes it seem like a minor issue. my 2021 890 is getting new cams under warranty. thankfully. this is a significant issue and you could dedicate an investigative video to the ktm cams issue. this really help ktm 7/890 owners
If they put 890 style tanks on that coming Ducati single it would be perfection. Hopefully it doesn't get a tea cup tank to win the spec sheet wars but instead something for the real world.
Honestly, fuck KTM. Just admit there is a problem and do something about it. I hate that there doesn't seem to be a good competitor for the 790 ADV yet, because that's the one bike I've sat on in that general category that I actually have a decent amount of foot on the ground, but between this and making you pay extra for features that are already built into the bike, they can get stuffed, I'll wait until another company produces something similar.
Forgot 698 enduro. They need to make 698 adventure bike. Ktm already has the enduro bike which is not really good at one particular thing, but a 700cc single adventure bike would be perfect with real subframe and windscreen. That would be an under 400lbs adventure bike!! And a lot more desirable than kove 800x😉
Looking at how many compainies offer aftermarket rally/adventure fairings for the 690/701, it still surprises me that there has never been a factory version. If Ducati is clever, they bring a Desert X light version! However, from what I read in test, the Ducati single needs quite a lot rpms to come alive, this does not fit an offroad bike.
Ducatis can be bought in Australia for approx $3500 deposit $ 120 per week repayments over 5 yrs , with $6000 approx residual at end of term …..for a desert X ect ….now it makes sense why Ducati dealers have lines of used Multistradas ect approx 5 yrs old .
Ktm 790/890 I want to but one. Upgrade the warranty. Including 2nd hand, because ppl are dumping their problem bikes. Offer a recall warranty, for whomever owns the bike, for 201x years and after. I hear so many good things, but as many reliability issues. KTM, just step up, any you will rule the adv market.
I must admit that I'm not interested in Race Ready technology and am far more interested in quality, reliability, maintainability and manufacturer support in the rare occasion that it's needed, and from what I see, that's not KTM.
All for quality components but to say this is only a Chinese quality issue is an invalid statement. Every US manufacturer has had cam issues at one time or another…big mfgs. Even aftermarket mfgs., as well suffered this, I can go back to the 70’s having cam failures in rebuilds, am very familiar with Caterpillar cams or fuel pump cam issues…Harley, too, could go on and on…yes not admitting the issues by any mfg. was and is horrendous…personally experienced that with Cat, and yes made in USA. The final metal treatment process goes off - the end user pays the price, no matter, if small cc or large…sad that QA process is missed so many times. The challenge for us two wheel riders can leave you stranded in a bad way…for what it is worth…enjoy the video format on this channel! Continued good luck and rubber side down…
No thx. For now, my fixed Rally 300 (suspension, bigger throttle body snorkle, full exh, delicious 550 Performance ecu tune) is the dirt oriented ride. Yes, a bit of a gamble, CFMOTO 450mt for the more road oriented adv ride. All in 17k usd.

The Ducati 698 Enduro would be incredible! I hope it happens.
Regarding the KTM Cam issue, I zoomed into the announcement you posted and it clearly says, please visit your KTM dealer if you have an issue and if cams are found to be damaged, they will be replaced by KTM, with the cost borne by KTM. Cheers
Forever? Or only during warranty period.
@@pjn934 the KTM announcement mentions 2018 model 790s, so I think it will go past the warranty period, but it may not go forever?
The great one is back !! :-) Well recovery for all your family 🙏
Thanks mate
Calling it conversations about Desert X is bit too optimistic. There was almost nobody mentioning it before, so I made that picture in 30 min in Gimp and I'm really happy you used it, so now we can have some real conversations about 698 Desert X :D
I think with that power, weight and 15k service interval it would be great lightweight adventure bike for travelling
Well thanks for the pictures 👍 good old gimp 😆
Whoever buys a Ducati for hard enduro, rally, or any motocross event has lost their mind. Financially, you won't recover from breaking things apart. Clear pass for me. 😂
Himalayan 650 already spotted testing in india
Hey, Solid can you make a video on "Why do manufacturers no longer put a kick starter on modern day two wheelers (motorcycles)" ??
I miss them, they make starting a bike so damn easy when your battery dead.
No kidding, I'd happily pay extra for a kickstarter and the ability for the bike to run without a battery. It seems pretty clear the manufacturers don't understand the dual sport audience at all.
Not on a modern bike with all the electronics and fuel injection they wont, you wont spin it over fast enough to generate sufficient power
@@Kickaha83 We used to do it on 600cc and some even on old Harley's like 74ci = 1200+cc , and
Why would they design the electronics in such way tharu it would come in the way of implementing kick starter ??
Cheers!
Can always count you to get me the moto info I'm interested in. Thanks Solid and hope the household feels better.
Thanks Tod
Excellent content Solid!! Had my interest all the way through!! I think the Honda CB125f needs a factory adventure kit as an added option. Cheers for the entertainment.
Thanks mate and agreed 👍
I can see Ducati cranking out dual sport and I'm there for it. I love my DR650 but damn a 77hp 350lb'ish, please Lord keep it under 350, Ducati dual sport would be very very nice.
The Honda CT125 has a kickstarter as well.
I was hoping RE would do a 452 scrambler based on the new Himalayan engine.
Solid video mate.
Good point.
The thing is that components are already being sourced from China and other areas where costs are lower.
These days your engine might be built in Asia, then slotted in to the frame (also fabricated in Asia) in XYZ factory.
You'd have to dig deep through the export documentation to gain any idea of where the components were sourced.
@@pauln6803 I can still choose to not buy Chinese products if I can avoid it, especially big dollar ones, I don't have an issue with all of Asia...
The KTM statement does not include the 890 or 901…
Not sure if the Wolf 125 will make it to the EU, but given the price of 40 year old C90s, they would probably sell well.
I'm still likely to go with the Fantic 500 if this is the next RE Scrambler or if I can spring for the 700 I'd go that if there's a rally variant.
waiting for DRZ600 SM or a Yamaha WR 700 SM......
The Tenere platform is too heavy and underpowered for a half decent SM.
But Yamaha could at least give the Ten radially mounted calipers which would give people an easier time of making the 700 more road focused.
Love it mate, always leave a like 👍🫡
Cheers 👍
10:50 *Did you even read what KTM wrote????* They clearly say that if the camshafts are found to be faulty, they will be replaced by KTM, at no cost, under the goodwill scheme (maybe out of warranty too).
was that seriously the most representative photo that you could find of ktm 7/890 worn cams? your choice of worn cams photo makes it seem like a minor issue. my 2021 890 is getting new cams under warranty. thankfully. this is a significant issue and you could dedicate an investigative video to the ktm cams issue. this really help ktm 7/890 owners
I was waiting to get an AJP PR7 (possibily) now if Ducati does a small DesertX uuuuuhhhhh I don't know which one I'd get!
If they put 890 style tanks on that coming Ducati single it would be perfection. Hopefully it doesn't get a tea cup tank to win the spec sheet wars but instead something for the real world.
I absolutely see KTM buying Ducati, if the single becomes too popular!
Did they use a bathtub as a mould for the Enfield Adventure bike's body?
There are very recent spy shots of a 650cc Himalayan with adjustable front suspension and dual front discs with a 19inch front wheel
Rumours are it may actually be a 750 or 850 version of the 650
only seen bored out 650s and one-off custom jobs
It has to be a bored out version because it will be heavy and 47 hp won't be enough. If it's a 650 then that's a damn shame@@slakk5093
I like the Enfield wildfire.
Would like to see it on the 450.
Gives them an adv bike in 2cc platforms.
I changed my cams at around 8.5K miles, a few months before KTM admitted any issues exist. Just had goodwill for the cost of my parts DENIED.
That is rough 😞
My 690 Duke needed new cams at 15,000 km.
So it's not a new issue.
What kind of rediculous, Klaus Schwab "own nothing and be happy" rental scheme is that?
Ktm 790/890
I want to but one.
Upgrade the warranty.
Including 2nd hand, because ppl are dumping their problem bikes.
Offer a recall warranty, for whomever owns the bike, for 201x years and after.
I hear so many good things, but as many reliability issues.
KTM, just step up, any you will rule the adv market.

not just 790/890 inc nordon 901 & new Kove 800 which uses the 790 engine

After all I've seen with motorcycle failures, I think I'll never sell my DR650. I said.
No KTM or Ducati for me. If I want a premium ADV, I'm looking at Triumph.
And you tube channels still promote CF moto
Continued good luck and rubber side down…
Fun Fact: If you purchase the CSC Wolf without the Aluminum Topbox you half the purchase price of the motorcycle. 😂
Gotta love Ekka flu waves - every August :(

No KTM gag orders this time , to many failures this time cam wear. Gag orders for 350 cams snapping , new engine if you sign the gag order . Polished Turds
Maybe you should read the press briefing from top to bottom and not select bits a pieces.
The 2024 KTM is 95% different than the previous model and have extended the warranty out to 4yrs . I`m on my 2nd kTm with the 24 390Duke and already looking at trading up to the 2025 390 ADV, no problems for me yet but put that down to getting a new model every year. I love kTm😁.
No the 2024 KTM , is 95% the same (not different) .., and the extra two year warranty ONLY applies if each and every service is done by KTM and nobody else
The 390s are manufactured in India. Maybe they are better than the Chinese ones?

Ducati enduro yes......cast wheel adventure tourer, nah its a rattlearse single!
KTM just can’t get past designing bikes that get 5 minute oil change intervals and are only ridden 10 hours before a total engine rebuild.
Ducati could destroy KTM with two more off-road models. KTM needs to stick to race only bikes.
