Around 70% of Buryats can speak the language and the Buryat population keeps increasing both in relative and absolute numbers. I do not really see them as endangered, but as they are a small population, in case of a sharp change in policy in Russia, this could dramatically change demographics and their language, but there is no sign of such a policy shift by Russia. In contrast, Turkey is harshly discriminating and persecuting the use of Kurdish, even today. Also China seems to apply harsh discrimination against the Uighur language, apparently (provided that Western media do not lie or exaggerate the situation).

We, as Sundanese people in Indonesia, also experience the same thing, young Sundanese in Indonesia, especially in urban areas, many cannot or have lost their mother tongue. and even parents here have no intention of teaching their mother tongue to their children. Not only Sundanese, but almost all ethnicities in Indonesia experience the same thing.
It's sad to hear that Buryatia people don't know their native language because their national anthem is so good lol

In fact, Buryats live in Russia, China, Mongolia. Buryats of Mongolia and China can speak their native language freely

    ILLEGAL TO SPEAK? 😂😂
Maybe someone forbade to speak, but it was more likely everyday nationalism than state policy.

  • @chingizzhylkybayev8575

It was SO not illegal to speak Buryat in Soviet times. No language was illegal in Soviet times, actually. This kind of blatantly deceptive propaganda makes me sick.
Also, Buryat is by no means a dying language. If almost half of Buryats speak it, how is it dying? You stress the number 300,000 but absolute numbers are meaningless in this context.

      1. There's always been language policies in place that promoted Russian over other languages, in Soviet times and way before, numbers of ethnic speakers have been diminishing since the 1800s. 2. 'Dying language' is a very subjective and ill-defined term. Even if 300,000 Buryats use the language in one generation, if young people are not using it in the next generation, the language will radically diminish in its userbase.

Buryat culture and religions were all but destroyed during Soviet times. Buryat "shamanism" became illegal, as was the drumming in Ger. It's not propaganda.
