Ceasar Milan and others have said same for many yrs. Attn is feedback or reward for dog’s behavior so makes sense to not reward unwanted behavior incl waiting for them to be calm and submissive then reach out for first intro. Dogs do same as part of pack - leaders and followers. Too many make mistake of yelling at a runaway dog after it comes back vs rewarding them for the wanted behavior of coming when called. Visited my brother-in-law in another part of the country, first time I'd seen his German shepherd in her kennel, behind chain link fencing, and it was constant 'Bark, bark, bark', jumping up, etc. Very excitable dog. My brother-in-law and I couldn't hear ourselves think, much less each other. So I went over to the chain link, turned my back to her, and leaned/lounged against it while ignoring her and talking with my brother-in-law. Dog settled right down, sniffed my leg couple times, went over to her bed, circled and lay down. He was surprised, said first time she's done that with a stranger. I just said I didn't play into her anxiety, treated my presence there as no biggie, and she bought it that I was not a threat for her to scare off, because I'd claimed her fence.
@billparrish4385 I do this with my neighbors dog every 2 hours when I go out for a cigarette.
Fucker still barks at me.
Every dog is different.
I personally start with asking the owner of the dog if they are friendly, and proceed. Always make them have to take a few steps to come towards you, but if it's a pup that looks a lil scared.. I'm definitely making myself small.
@@ch33seweasel42 I think it had something with my claiming her fence. As long as I was 'over there' (out of reach), she could scare me away with aggressive barking. When i became a part of her immediate territory, and not only unafraid to get close, not acknowledge her, even acting a bit bored with her, that confidence translated to her as 'pack leader', relieving her of the stress and responsibility of trying to lead me with her high-strung anxiety, for which she was ill-suited.
Or something like that.... :)
I would try this technique someday. I made friend with various dogs by slowly presenting myself but I haven't thought about facing the back to the dog 🤔 I know in dog language it means you're not afraid or bother if you will be attacked from the back and it seems like that move send out a signal that you're not afraid at all, you are superior and it's not worth it to stand against you 😮
You were also close enough that she could check you out, and remained close enough for her to keep an eye on you.
I don't trust ANY dog,esp frothing at the mouth barking one's!

My girlfriend touched my business today
My husband was a cop for 25 years. I grew up fearless of any animal. He asked me early on how best to approach an aggressive dog because he didn't want to have to shoot one. I told him to do the "OH WHAT A GOOD BOY BIG BABYYYY OMG COME HEREEEEE SWEET BOY" In a baby voice and apparently that worked so well all those years he had no issues. Several "mean dog" owners were a little pissed at their dogs betrayal at letting a cop into the yard for belly rubs tho lol. Most dogs revert back to puppy hood when they hear certain tones and phrases aimed at them. Deep down they all still think they're puppies and miss being treated as such.
I am a UPS driver and what you said works for me. When a dog barks I say, "Hey puppeeeee..."
I agree with and understand the ignoring the dog (since I have a large Akita who is very protective) but as a delivery driver I have to get in and get out so I speak to the dog, face it without fear and usually present a treat so the dog has a positive memory of me also I don't pet them unless they want me to.
@@gregoryfromcali on the note of treats, you may have already considered it but you should be very careful what you use. They started walking with me, tried to sniff, one even tried to grab my leg but in the end, they gave up.
Yup. Actual agressive dogs will run at you and they will mean it. If you got somewhat close to them and they are not seriously trying to bite you already, there is nothing to fear. Even if they strongly bark at you but not biting yet, you just keep an eye contact and you are fine.

Fun story.
In college me and a friend were out for a project. We were going house to house. In one of the houses, out of nowhere 5 big dogs ran at us. We were atleast 30-35 m inside the property already. My friend wanted to run, but I stopped him firmly and suggested we both just stand there and not move, but also not be too stiff. Never had the experience of dealing with dogs but just had that instinct because it always seemed to me that dogs have the kind of sixth sense to know when you are nervous, afraid, or in general have a negative vibe, and don't harm if you are innocent. And just as I had hoped, the dogs, even though came very aggressively, just sniffed at us all over, by that time the owners came and called them back. I'm sure if we had tried to run, we would have regretted.
Not gonna ruin that 6⃣9⃣. 😈
@@jangwangood save👍 best to leave it as is🗿
You guessed correctly. Dogs have a predatory chase instinct. They were already on alert, running would have confirmed in their mind that you are prey to be chased, caught, and possibly killed.
Never Run if you see a Dog or Dogs running towards you at full speed they will start chasing you and would eventually bit you. My Grandfather Made this mistake Twice, he would always try to shoo them away and the dog would bite him. We have a lot of stray dogs around we live.
Because of this, I learned what to do and Would just ignore them and look forward and would pass by them without slowing or changing my pace and they would just ignore me completely.
The dogs face when he pushes passed him 😂
My bizness 😂 Great term!!👍
I agree. Ignoring the dog lets it know you aren't picking a fight. If you ran up to it, it might feel threatened and act accordingly.
I feel ignoring it and not letting sniff you is actually the opposite of what you want to do sure the dog might not attack you if you ignore it maybe it like a 50/50 chance but the point of putting your hand out is to let it sniff you and if the dog doesn't want to sniff you it will walk away also what helps is not being afraid of the dog if you are not afraid of the dog will see that it's like if I was your Uber driver and I was nervous about driving that would inturn make you nervous it works the same way if you are not afraid of the dog the dog won't be afraid of you would you trust someone that is afraid of of you probably not. Out of 18 years of being around dogs I have only been bitten once and that was on me not the dog but out of those 18 years I never go in being afraid of of the dog I also have never seen a dog that won't sniff your hand and the reason you use your hand is if you are like the dude in the video that doesn't want it in his space it's so it can get your smell at a distance keeping a difference doesn't mean you are afraid.
@@FBI_42069 ...did you watch the video? Just because walking on the highway for 18 years only caused you to get hit once... doesn't mean it's not dangerous.
