The main goal for this particular model was being lightweight and portable. Thus, this interation is a plastic body. The original FANTOM series was a metal body.
Can you use the expression pedal to swap between two (or more?) layers of sounds. Thus, for example changing instruments from piano to synth with my feet while playing with both hands? And/or can I use a pedal to go to the next (preprogrammed) patch while playing?
@@KrishnanR26 I have the 08 now, but I did not find the option to use the expression pedal to swap sounds. There is an global option to inverse a pedal, but then I need to exp pedals. The Keyboard switch group with the pads or using splits is the alternative now.
Can you hear the already recorded sample pad audio while recording a new sample pad audio in the sequencer (by triggering)? Or playing more than 4 stereo (or 8 mono) sample pad audio in the sequencer at once? This was one of the annoying limitations in FA series workstations. Lot of FA owners are waiting for the answer before they sell their FA and buy Fantom-O series as manual didn't elaborate on these issues. Although not clear who would buy secondhand old FA06 (Still selling new 2,249 CAD at Long & McQuade) when they can buy the new Fantom-O6 for 2,099 CAD!
The sample pads seem to have all the same limitations on Fantom-0, but polyphony isn't mentioned, so I would assume 4 stereo/8 mono pads at once at best.
Another question? Anyone know how this would work inside reason 12? Is there any issues in setting it up? I'm just wanting to use this more as a sound source and a controller inside reason 12.
@@OptimaMrL functionality is 95% of the older FA, the four big differences are Ableton integration, appearance, front panel controls, and simple loop sequencer Older FA has better pianos than the Zen-Core pianos, Fantom-0 has all of the FA's other sounds, FA has the better sequencer, just so you know that a very close alternative is about with different strengths and may be going at a reduced prive in your country ;)
@@Jason75913 thank you. For me I need a keyboard that integrates well with MainStage, where I can bring sounds in and out, in a live setting, and it needs to be portable
@@OptimaMrL As in transmit audio over USB? Juno-DS, FA, RD-88, and Fantom-0 are all compatible and portable. The Juno can run on 8 AA batteries for convenience. The bigger Fantom (not Fantom-0), is also compatible, but it is huge and heavy and has a lot more features and Eurorack compatibility, be sure not to get confused. Yamaha MODX and MOXF are also compatible. They all rock, just decide on the features that you want, and if you are picky about keybeds, FA-08 has the best of all of these followed by the Juno-DS88. I think 61-key is best for portability, but if you must have more, there are 76-key and 88-key versions of all of these keyboards, but RD-88 only comes in one 88-key form, and there are only 61 and 88 key forms for MOXF. RD-88 also has the best piano sounds of all of these, but extra features are far more limited versus the rest, it is a simpler, higher quality instrument, then MODX comes next in best pianos then MOXF. FA and Juno-DS can load the free Roland Axial expansions, and EXP-04 has a piano preset better than anything either keyboard normally comes with. You can count on all of these I've mentioned to be overkill on stage in any event, so pick your features first, then sound(s), I say. Junos will be the lightest in weight. No one knows if the Fantom-0 series will get the same keybeds as the FA series, we will probably start seeing feedback about their usage in June.
Can someone tell how many expansion packs can be accommodated in the Fantom O? Heard it is 256 MB only. But wondering how many packs can fit in. Not greedy for that price but want to load a few good pianos, orchestral strings and some Indian tones.
Hi, I’ve just seen your question. I’ve never had the FA 07 but I had the 06. Now I got the phantom 07 which I purchased one month ago. Believe me when I tell you that the keys are so much better. Regards from Spain.
Thanks for the review mate. I want to know if the keybed for the 61key version is the same as that on the FA-06. I owe an FA--06 but the keybed IMO is not at all satisfying. really not so comfortable to play on. Wonder if the keybed got upgraded on the new fantom-06.
I have an FA06 as well and I share your view of the keybed. Over on roland clan forums, someone got a hands on of the new Fantom 0 and said it was different (better)
@@JJJB yeah, the FA06 keybed is bad. I don’t think it’s cheap as many describe, just poorly designed, small keys, too a short pivot, velocity problems on black keys that were never addressed.
Do the zen core sounds sound like the Roland cloud vst sounds? I had an xp50 that had jv1080 sound engine but the roland cloud jv1080 vst was so thin sounding compared to the xp50. Are Fantom O sounds like a vst?
It is unlikely to match the VST sound due to the hardware adding a bit of its own distortion and noise, plus the DAC will contribute to the sound slightly, all stuff missing inside of the VST. That aside, does the thinness matter at all once the VST sounds are fitted into the mix? I highly doubt it does. Running the VSTs' sound through hardware like Soundcraft MTK mixers should help add "mojo" and fullness to the sound, too.
Thanks for feedback , I really enjoyed creating songs on xp50 even with such a basic sequencer. Creating a song from a DAW is not even close sound wise or writing .
@@ShawnBrandon888 I love my Kross2, JD-Xi, MC-707, and FA-06 in about the same way. Massive X and FM8 can do some stuff that my hardware cannot, though, same goes for Kontakt, and The Grandeur kills at piano. Sometimes I just dupe VST presets in my Roland gear from which I develop alternate versions of those presets.
It's one of the first specs covered at 1:06. The 06 and 07 are unweighted keys for more synthlike action and the 08 is weighted keys for more piano-like action.

We concur. If it was a "sound only" demo, we might as well be hearing a VST. There's more to a product than just how it sounds. There's a lot about the physical keyboard that needs to be shown and explained in words.

On second thought,I think I'll do all of my recording on the Fantom and then just export it all to my Reason DAW.
the new cubase 12 has a midi remote function that will let you comprehensivly impliment most of the fantom to control the daw and plugins as required. its probably the best thing steinberg has done for a long time. and who owens steinberg??? oh ye.. yamaha ;)
@@markashley6859 I had a Yamaha MOXF that came with Cubase....what a cluster-f**k that was...a real incoherent mess that I never sorted out. Even one of the sound designers for Yamaha told me to stay away from Cubase....& he was right...Cubase is the most counter-intuitive DAW ever created(a very capable & versatile DAW)...but nonetheless, a terrible pain in the ass, so I went with Presonus Studio One(which by the way, was created by some of the team from Steinberg.)
@@HighlandStudio91 I've used Nuendo, Cubase, Pro Tools, Logic, Mixbus, Audition, and even Acid back in the day. Cubase is the easiest to use, in my opinion, along with Nuendo, which is just the fancier, more expensive version of Cubase. I'm currently using Harrison Mixbus 32C, which works well, but there are features from Cubase I miss.
Sublime Om 🎹👍
I want to incorporate an iPad vs a computer with this any suggestions?
Thanks for Sharing, is the body metal or plastic as I like a well build Keyboard.
The main goal for this particular model was being lightweight and portable. Thus, this interation is a plastic body. The original FANTOM series was a metal body.
thanks for the great review! like and repost )
Can you use the expression pedal to swap between two (or more?) layers of sounds. Thus, for example changing instruments from piano to synth with my feet while playing with both hands? And/or can I use a pedal to go to the next (preprogrammed) patch while playing?
Hey, I've been wanting to know the same. Did you get an answer? Cheers
What about the last drawbar ? There’s no fader for it… 8 faders, 9 drawbars. So can drawbars be controlled on the touchscreen ?
ya
@@Jason75913 thanks
Have you tried using a 9th drawbar on a touchscreen before. I wouldn't recommend it.
But no Cubase support?
Another question? Anyone know how this would work inside reason 12? Is there any issues in setting it up? I'm just wanting to use this more as a sound source and a controller inside reason 12.
How do program the mono-talkbox program
I thought about this a couple years ago, “Why wouldn’t Roland pull a Yamaha and do their own MODX?” Well, here if is! I’m excited.
I think they have done more than their own MODX. This is a serious keyboard
@@OptimaMrL I think the MODX is probably one of the most powerful synthesizers on the market. It’s a very good instrument.
@@OptimaMrL functionality is 95% of the older FA, the four big differences are Ableton integration, appearance, front panel controls, and simple loop sequencer
Older FA has better pianos than the Zen-Core pianos, Fantom-0 has all of the FA's other sounds, FA has the better sequencer, just so you know that a very close alternative is about with different strengths and may be going at a reduced prive in your country ;)
Fantom G7 is still the best Roland Workstation. It just needs faster USB / Flash ROM ports and RAM. Everything else is superior.
Can someone tell how many expansion packs can be accommodated in the Fantom O? Heard it is 256 MB only. But wondering how many packs can fit in. Not greedy for that price but want to load a few good pianos, orchestral strings and some Indian tones.
Pleasee.... what about the keybed... are they the same than FA 07? Or it's like the poor FA06?
Hi,
I’ve just seen your question. I’ve never had the FA 07 but I had the 06. Now I got the phantom 07 which I purchased one month ago. Believe me when I tell you that the keys are so much better. Regards from Spain.
nice T shirts!!
Does this board have the same sounds as the 707 groove box?
The keys is The same of The Fantom 6? If not, are comparable with which?
different, i would give fantom 6 = 8 for the keybed, and for fantom 06 = 7
Hi! Can this keyboard load SVD. files? Thanks 🇿🇦🇿🇦
Tell me please what material from made case and parts of the roland Fantom 06, how you feel this keybed? Is it much worse? 🤔 thank you
Plastic case but with a good feel
Does this workstation only work with ableton? I ask because I want to buy this synthesizer to compose my songs, is there another possibility? 🤔
The FANTOM-0 series' DAW control is compatible with Ableton, Logic and MainStage.
Nice review … I’m sure you get this a lot but if a young Jerry Garcia needed to be played you would be the million dollar man
Does this synth have anything new or different or even better than its flagship counterpart?
The whole point is that it has less going on at a fraction of the price, but still the same Zen-Core engine and a bit more.
@@ckatheman great news. thanks bud
i have both, original fantom and fantom o, i rated original fantom keybed = 8 and fantom o = 7
@@lulebay thx bud. so a bit inferior to fantom but still acceptable. i would rate the FA06=1 or 2:)
@@JJJB yeah, the FA06 keybed is bad. I don’t think it’s cheap as many describe, just poorly designed, small keys, too a short pivot, velocity problems on black keys that were never addressed.
👍👍👌
Very nice i am sidharth suryawanshi india
Thank u
Can you turn off the metronome sound during recording?
Yes
What's the difference between this and the FA 06?
this is baby fantom
a lot, but the FA-06 has a lot of the same sounds
Please explain key action
It's one of the first specs covered at 1:06. The 06 and 07 are unweighted keys for more synthlike action and the 08 is weighted keys for more piano-like action.
Do this fantom has aftertouch
No aftertouch on these models.
Drake's long lost brother.
Blows the overpriced Juno X and Jupiter X out of the water.
The true Value Roland synth is the 0 Series Fantom.
Despite this being a cut and paste bot comment from 10 years ago, you're hilariously wrong and have an infantile understanding of the models and zencore to even believe that in the first place. Do everyone a favour and never comment again.
Sounds thin? But sure it is probably the recording technic.
This keyboard was recorded direct using the 1/4" outs straight into a Zoom H6 recorder.
@@longandmcquade Well, what was the sampling frequency?
@@samiam9059 48kHz which is standard for audio for video.
@@longandmcquade yep...thx
There isn't anything wrong with their technique. Zencore is accurate but has a somewhat lifeless quality, akin to modern VST.
Sounds like a 20$ 90s Casio Keyboard...
Really like this keyboard, too bad the piano sounds are... Meeeh.. :(
shame about the polyphony problems
So looks like no linear recording on this one...smh.
after using yamaha montage and modx, then playing this keyboard, i was so disappointed. the sounds are so plasticky, light, dry, lifeless, boring, depressing. the pianos are useless. only the lead sounds are okay... i thought this keyboard would have inherited sounds from roland stage pianos and other flagship fantom but i was wrong. took a bad gamble. if you wanna buy a roland fantom 07, hit me up lol
Since he didn't play it extensively, means there's something wrong with it, meaning the Roland Fantom series is probably not the best. Every demo on TH-cam about this shit-piece is very brief on sounds. But hang on I thought the sound is what counts.
a very boring synth dude....2023 really Roland ?
Sorry, but totally bored by this .
Sorry, but you lost me as a viewer after the fifth time you said "super easy".
He must have just really wanted to drive that point home!
What a little baby
why dont you do less talk and more demo
Why don't you go to a "sounds only" video? Why are you watching a retailer advertisement? These demonstration videos always have a demonstrator demonstrating the product, which includes verbal explanations of what they are demonstrating.
You seem lost. Good luck to you.
We concur. If it was a "sound only" demo, we might as well be hearing a VST. There's more to a product than just how it sounds. There's a lot about the physical keyboard that needs to be shown and explained in words.
Sounds are good to hear but there's 3k of them. I watched a dozen fantom 06 videos and honestly this simple one sold me the most because it showed me some of the usability advances over fa06 and ds61. The quick and easy rating thing alone - such a simple thing yet so awesome when you have that many sounds! Thx for the video, I'll be visiting the Brampton store 😇👍
Hi! Can this keyboard load SVD. files? Thanks 🇿🇦🇿🇦
Whats the difference between this and the Roland FA - 08 ?
different front panel controls, different sound engines, different sequencers, Fantom-0 does really good Ableton integration
One is masterpiece. The other is called Fantom-0.
