    I grew up there as my dad was in the navy. The last 5 years we had a house there. I lived at the beach and my bathing suit was always on under my clothes in the summer. We left when my dad retired and I was 16. I cried myself to sleep for months and when it snowed probably 6 foot total that winter I cursed this place. I adjusted and have always longed to return which we will do when we retire, to far away to get a good visit right now. It is beautiful there and I enjoyed every museum there was. I love history to this day and probably because I grew up there. To this day I still have a little accent left!

    I agree with every single thing on both of your lists. This was easily one of the most accurate 4-5 minute videos of this kind I've seen yet.
    I'd like to add as a Pro that Charleston is very centrally located in the coastal south. It is less than a days drive to Atlanta, Charlotte, Savannah, Columbia, Wilmington, Raleigh, Greenville SC, Asheville and Jacksonville Fl. So if you want to visit the mountains or need something you'd only find in a really big city or are just looking to explore it's a great base to start from.
    A con for me is that you will have to do a little of that traveling to take in major league professional sports, big time college sports, a big amusement park or major concert and that would probably mean an overnight stay to enjoy those facilities.
    Great video!!!

    • @KatarinaWestRE
      @KatarinaWestRE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much, I’m glad you think so!
      And I agree with you on your added Pro - it is an easy drive to a lot of great places and major cities down South.
      And you’re right about major sporting/concert events and amusement parks too - I do wish we had some bigger venues here. I wouldn’t be surprised in the coming years if more development happens on that front with how many people are moving here.
      Thank you for commenting and watching! 😊

    The traffic is the worst I've ever experienced and I've driven in places like Atlanta. There are wrecks everywhere every day, people drive really dangerously. Then it gets backed up from that and also for no reason at all. Rush hour is all afternoon lol. Plus unless you are rich you are forced to live over an hour away from where you work. Not worth it. Been here 5 years and I think it's a nice place to visit but totally overrated for living here.

      I have lived in Charleston since 1991. James Island, West Ashley, Johns Island, & Downtown. Crime is not a huge thing in DT, and in most of the barrier island. If you push out to Monks Corner, Goose Creek, North Charleston, Summerville, Dorchester, and Ladson, you may see an uptick. But with gentrification the DT area is pushing up into to those areas. So the crime and poverty is being pushed further North due to the cost of living.

      I’d say go somewhere else in SC since I don’t like the increasing population, mainly because of the simultaneous increase in infrastructure that kinda fucks over the charm it used to have for me growing up here. But honestly it’s past that point for me now and I’m probably moving the second I’m done with senior year of HS. If you get here and think it’s crowded here or anything population wise, I wouldn’t expect it to get better, trust me, it’s not just tourism months, it’s year round and it gets worse every year. That’s just me personally, I didn’t choose to be born here though still would have as I had a pretty awesome childhood growing up here. I just wouldn’t want to live here now but that’s because it’s changed and honestly I’d rather get something completely fresh than watching my childhood memories slowly get hacked at as infrastructure grows, especially since I grew up on Daniel Island which has gone from mostly woods to a haven for infrastructure and expensive housing. I already got kicked out of my old home because prices shot up and continue to for housing since my mom rented the place as a single mother. It probably won’t be a problem for you, but if it does become one, just remember it’s going to continue to get worse so just be contentious that the area is always changing nowadays. I grew up a history buff so I can confirm that it’s an amazing city and honestly, other than what’s left of my childhood memories and landmarks and the opportunity for money in the are, the history is the only reason that I consider staying. It’s a pretty place still but it’s a different kind of pretty than it used to be and than it’s made out to be. The Downtown Area is pretty much the same vibe as it’s always been kind of. It’s always been the main haven for infrastructure but it’s jarring in the way it clashes with the historical architecture. If you do move, get on the water in some way, shape, or form. It’s one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the not-so-lonely calmness feeling of the area. Definitely get outside and visit new areas. I have plenty of memories of sitting out on my Grandparents house in Awendaw SC which is kinda near the peninsula area. Plenty of memories of going boating with friends in the waters surrounding the peninsula. The infrastructure and people isn’t bad per say as it brings in money, etc. It’s just not the same for me so it gets kinda depressing sometimes watching things that are kind of important to you get bought out or something like that. It seems like a happy and vibrant area and it is but it gets very chaotic and old really quick. A lot of the glee you see is fake and more to get tourism more than anything. I mean, we’re arguably nice people from what I understand, I don’t deal with people being rude often at least and even then they are often tourists who get pissed at random things that they can’t do or are limited from which is understandable since they’re on vacation and expect a tourist city to be well adjusted for that(spoilers: we’re not all the time). I don’t meant to be a pessimist, it’s just a mix of my personal subjective and objective beliefs and feelings. It’s all in the eyes of the beholder really, just be wary of what’s predicted to happen in the future. It can get monotonous sometimes with the daily buzz and all. And, the small town feeling is also very jarring with the daily buzz akin to a more developed area. It’s a great place for vacations as well because of the water, but since you plan on moving, I’d definitely say get a hobby or a few that relate to the area since I don’t see a lot of newcomers doing that. I definitely think the boat to car ratio has gone down a bit in the past decade or so. It keeps that area a live to have that kind of balance. Even just basic fishing is a good way to pass time and immerse yourself in the area, you don’t need a big boat or anything, just a rod and a good spot and some prior knowledge(you can learn). If you don’t already have a plan for a hobby or something other than just living your life in the area in general, trust me, it’s worth it. I don’t know how to explain it further really since honestly it’s all feelings. The pretty aspect and all the description you get of the area from people like the poster, at least to me, cover parts that are really only going to look good for a second and at first glance, the kinds of things pitched to tourists. They aren’t really going to hold your interest for the years you’re going to be living here. If you treat it like a tour’s, you’ll be left with nothing to do but the daily buzz of the day and you’re not going to get the most value out of living in the area. Obviously, you don’t have to start right away, but you should at least keep it in mind especially for if you’re ever getting bored of the area and the daily buzz. I’ve seen too many people bitter or bored about the area when they moved here but seemed to only know about the tourist attraction side of Charleston outside of their daily lives. For example, I love history and I love the history of the area, but I’m not going to the museum and York Town aircraft carrier every other day. I’ve been to each maybe 10 times in the 17 years I’ve lived here, and trust me, that’s enough unless you want to work there.

    U are wrong about the snow. There was alot more than a tiny bit. We had 7 inches of snow in Summerville, and the rest of the area averaged 4 inches. Then there was alot ice on the roads. U need to better research on the situation.

    • @KatarinaWestRE
      @KatarinaWestRE  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, I understated the amount of snow we had. I was in Mount Pleasant and we did get about 4 inches but I didn't realize Summerville had 7 inches.
      Much of my audience is comprised of people living in northern areas where they deal with way more snow in one season than we experience in a decade. I understand that, for Charleston, it was a substantial amount and that was kind of my point. I appreciate your feedback and I'll consider replacing hyperbole with precision in the future. I will also be doing a video on traffic soon, as traffic has certainly gotten worse here over the past few years. I have found that there is a lot to do here between local events, outdoor water activities, shopping, museums, dining, etc. Some people will say it is over crowded, but I'd say it depends on where you're coming from as everything is relative. I live in the heart of charleston. I can tell u that the beaches, plantations, being near other cities like Savanah, Georgia and myrtle beach is by far the best things about Charleston today. Mt Pleasant is beautiful but the nice and clean places are only for the wealthy people same as Charleston and anywhere near the islands.
    Other than that the city has gone downhill big time downtown is full of rats, cockroaches, smells terrible, extremely expensive, Charleston is a college party city drunk students is all there is in downtown Charleston, drugs are extremely common, if you are not making a good salary or come from a wealthy family then Charleston is not for u. Charleston has historical places and safe locations but it comes with a price the average person can't afford it.
    I work as a mental health therapist in Charleston and I can tell everyone to stay away from Charleston if ur looking for a nice southern place to live! If u want a place to party, non-stop drinking, drugs, or just a weekend visit then Charleston is ur place.

  • @johnd5398
    @johnd5398 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not from Charleston (thank god), but I am from the south and I take issue with the statement that we don't know how to deal with snow. We're capable of using the same tools that everyone else uses to deal with it. It's not some mystical power that you're born with or not.
    However, snow is so rare down here that it is economically foolish to buy those tools and pay to maintain them when they will almost never be used. Then there's the fact that the snow will be gone in a day or two; we don't get 6 to 8 months of snow like they do in the north. Financially, it's cheaper for everyone involved to stay home for a day or two and wait for the thaw.
    Also, aside from the decent seafood in the area, I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why everyone raves about the restaurants here. They are average, at best. I've been here for 5 years now and have yet to find an exceptional Chinese or Mexican restaurant. Some are okay. Most are bad.
    We can add to the cons the fact that you can't operate a bar here without serving food. So, unless you wait until after 10 or 11pm to go out, you will be dealing with kids while you're trying to have a drink with friends and watch the game. Plus, the liquor stores here close at 7pm. Welcome to the bible belt.

    • @KatarinaWestRE
      @KatarinaWestRE  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your insight, it's always interesting to hear other perspectives. About the snow, I didn't mean to offend. I meant it in a joking manner because of course we are all capable of dealing with snow tools, but because we don't have the resources to deal with it, everything tends to get shut down here. I agree with you that it wouldn't make financial sense for local governments to invest in snow tools because of how rare snow is here.
      Sorry to hear you don't like the food here. I'm with you on the liquor rules, it's annoying that liquor can't be sold past a certain time and that you can't just buy it in a grocery store. Oh well! If you do end up relocating, I hope you find a place you love.

    It is truly one of the best cities in the world to live in! The people are super-friendly and the state is sanely-run, unlike the blue states in the Northeast, upper Midwest and the Left Coast. The only negatives I would add is the pretty high housing costs, due to lots of emigres from the dysfunctional and colder north - and some suburban areas (most notably, Mt Pleasant) have seen too much growth and congestion, and not all of it is nice. I used to think it was one of the nicest suburbs anywhere, and the "new" bridge is awesome, but it is just too much development, which is changing the vibe. The Olde Village is great, however. The entire Lowcountry is a gem, and Charleston is great, but I hope it never loses its southern charm and roots. I do not want to see it morph into South Florida, which is just NY/NJ South! The mountains are only about 3.5 hours away, so a perfect weekend getaway.
