Growing up in the early 60's, it was common to hear them. Our home was about an hour from a SAC base. Our house also had those HUGE windows. I can remember my mom saying some pretty interesting words when the windows would shake after a sonic boom. 😉

In the pass, a sonic boom was just part of life. A sonic boom today happens, the pilot is reprimanded. I heard one once when I was a kid on an airforce base by a F4. The pilot got in trouble.

4:59, off the left catapult an f4d skyray almost stalling over left. Just a hair too much a.o.a. That is all it takes to lose control of these early jets. The pilot corrected quickly. Just quick enough, one more nanosecond it would have been disaster.

I was a kid in Columbus while North American was developing the Navy’s A-5J Vigilante. It regularly flew supersonic producing the sonic booms I grew to enjoy. I don’t remember it being scary, nor did we ever lose a window! To me it was just “super cool!”

I would see the F-106 pilots of the 84th FIS scramble, then take off using afterburners. Pretty cool, esp at night, but then you remembered why they may have scrambled.

Thank-you for sharing this with us. After I watched this, all my chickens stopped laying and the cows stopped producing milk! JUST KIDDING. I grew up in a rural city and used to hear sonic booms all the time, which never bothered me. However, I'm not certain where they got the data about surviving in 40º water. I attended Ranger School in the winter of 1976. During one of our patrols, we walked in waist to chest high water for several hours in 40º water, and all of us survived. Of course back then walking through cold water was the least of our hardships we endured.
When it comes to our national security, I would love to see SAC again patrolling our skies and have no problem putting up with the inconvenience of not having that immediate response to national threats.
