  • There are many things a surgeon can do to reduce pain and complications. In breast surgery, I offer my personal “special sauce" of 4 drugs injected directly into the breast pocket. This is not standard protocol, but I find that it works exceedingly well. My special sauce consists of four medications. The 1st is Exparel® a long lasting local anesthetic, so the breasts are numb for days after surgery. It does not work immediately, so I use a 2nd medicine: Marcaine™, a local anesthetic that numbs immediately rather than delayed. The 3rd is concentrated Bacitracin (50,000 units), an antibiotic which kills bacteria without killing white cells. The 4th medicine is Kenalog, a steroid used to treat inflammatory conditions to keep the pocket from getting tight over time. I have used it for 28 years to avoid capsular contracture. I charge $350 for this option to cover the cost of the drugs. When pain is minimized, patients do much better with recovery and are much more satisfied with their results.
