This is because the Plantation of Ulster was the most successfully of all the plantations many of plantations outside Ulster were ultimately unsuccessful in the long aside from a handful of towns and cities, most of the South remain defiant and rebellious, and the Southern Plantations never survived with sufficient numbers to completely oust the native Irish.
The Tully's sure are an odd bunch with their changing coat of arms, 4:54 . Where were they from again, Ulster or the Riverlands? Great work on the video!
It's funny you mention Game of Thrones. I was reminded a little of Stannis Baratheon, in the sense that he was adamant that he not leave Westeros even in the face of defeat, lest he should fail to raise an army and die overseas like the Ulster earls.
My ancestor that came to the States was born in Maguiresbridge in the mid 1700s, but lived most his life amongst a Kerry clan of Maguires. He initially fled Ireland with intentions of joining his uncle who was serving as Field Marshal in Austria, but became sick on his journey and somehow ended up recovering in Lisbon for several years. Once he was healthy he spent all the money he had on a case of wine and took it to the new world to flip it, eventually establishing the first Catholic church in the colony of Virginia and having three sons fight in the revolutionary war under Washington. Always a pleasure from your distant Yank cousins. :)
Great video again John, your videos about Irish history in particular are a great insight into a subject that is barely covered in history lessons here in the UK :)
As a fellow (Northern) Irishman, I always admire how you keep your videos so politically neutral. Where I come from we sadly don't get this form of education - it's simply teaching to the conclusion that the plantations must have been good as our tradition stems from it. Keep up the incredibly informative work on Irish history!

Weird irony that the ‘tamed’ parts are the ones that now form the Republic, while the British part was that last balwalk against them.
Historian Duck weird irony or good planning? There was a reason Ulster was chosen for extensive plantation right after the Flight of the Earls!
True. Irony isn’t the word. It was around the time of the plan of pretty much breeding them out, wasn’t it?
@@Bus_Driver_Jay Even with the plantation Ulster is still the most ballsy and rebellious province.

Interestingly, the River Quoile in Co. Down, Ulster, was used as the filming location for many of the scenes set in the Riverlands in the GoT TV show.

It’s kind of weird yet cool to see the family names the same as last names of people I know
