    Power, the ability to make changes in the world and/or influence others

    I wasn't a huge fan of the silhouette up until now, it seems to suit the longer videos more than the shorts I think. Either that or I've just come to accept your power over me.
    Love the animations and small details in this video. In particular the very subtle Infinity symbols... Almost subliminal!

      The goal was to drop it in and see how people would react without context. Responses were mixed, as you indicated. But yes, I think it will make a lot more sense with videos like this. Thanks for the input though, and I'm happy someone noticed the infinity symbols. Took me a minute to figure out how to run those effects...

    Power is a bitter sweet thing, it will always leave its victims on a hunt. Those with little power can harness it and only wish for more, those that hold never ending power cannot, but they too will seek more. Like the others, power will consume and corrupt those with mass amounts of it. (Just wanted to go deep for a second, makes for a spicier comment section.)

      I don't know if power always corrupts.. I think it might be a bit more complex than this. Most of the highly powerful people I've met aren't the kind of people who become corrupt in the same way as, say, a corrupt cop. They don't give in to their base desires, they know the risk that means in the competitive environment they're in. Instead, they're willing to do what it takes to win. But they have more foresight than say, cheating, or ignoring humanitarian efforts. Instead, they try to get their way using methods that keep people happy, and keep them in a comfortable position, both competitively and socially.

    1. Power is the ability to do. The ability to exercise your will.
    2. If I had "absolute power" I would not ask of others out of necessity. I would serve those who believe they are powerless with the intent to help them find it within themselves and exercise it to help others do the same.
    3. The thing that generates Power in my game of choice is positioning, lining up the target faster, and shooting with greater accuracy than the opponent.
    4. I can't say that my perception of power was necessarily altered, but rather the video did allow me to spend more time defining what I believe power is and give it greater context as to how I believe power is applicable.
    Thank you.

    Initially I think of power as work done over time taken.
    I suppose in a more philosophical sense it could be considered as someone or something’s ability to adapt and thrive in a given environment.

    Power is the agency to move the situation to one more to your liking.
    If I had absolute power (the ability to do anything I chose to) I would ask forgiveness and understanding from others as my actions will have consequences and I'm fallible to mistakes.
    Skill and Conscientiousness over time yeald great returns in your chosen domain.
    I think your description of power here came from the angle of competition which makes sense considering your onward content.
    This was fun, I liked it, aaannd I get the feeling you would destroy me at chess if we played 😁

    This was interesting to me. I actively strive for power daily and sometimes failling, the word "power" holds so many different meanings for me and yet I've never thought of power as being something that involved others. My "power" is not something that can be taken but i feel it is something I can give to others; my kids, my partner, my teammates. So for my answer to your second question is create a world for the next generation. I like this new direction. i like thinking.

      Well all power is relative, and power does not exist in a vacuum. You can not asses your own power without considering the power of forces around you.

  • @ghoool756
    @ghoool756 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    1 Power is a status achieved through accomplishment of goals and the climbing of the power process- whether it be in real goals, or goals in surrogate activities.
    2. I honestly would probably play into some fantasy of mine- having complete control over people makes you essentially a god and thus since I don’t have the perspective of someone with this power, it’s hard to be decisive with anything more then entirely vain.
    3. Weapons and Angles.
    4. No- I just don’t feel like there was a lot of meat to sway my opinion either way.

    • @ThetaVR

      Appreciate your thoughts. As for point 4, it's fair but there's a balance to be struck here. Power is something I could talk about for hours, but nobody wants to hear/watch that. So I have to compress a big, complex subject into something an average TH-cam viewer can tolerate. I don't always succeed, but that's the challenge I have to meet.

    • @ghoool756

      @@ThetaVR I agree power is an incredibly interesting subject- especially since many people doubt it’s necessity to the average person.

    Power is the ability to control others. And can be welded for many different objectives. I’ve noticed the jackal11 can take over the lobby and dictate what maps to play as well as whether or not we abide by the flash grenades in 12 seconds and fragrant and 15 seconds rule. He often wins the entire lobby to his point of view. This can be interpreted as manipulation but it is just good leadership.

    • @ThetaVR
      @ThetaVR  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I have heard many tales of this mysterious figure. Perhaps some day I will have the honor of sharing a lobby with him...

    1. Power in an individual would be: Personal confidence and modesty stemming from maturity and experience.
    2. It's incredibly difficult to estimate what one would or ought to do with absolute power until you have it. A good pop culture example is the "Super Soldier Serum" used in Captain America. It worked with Steve Rogers because he, at his core, was a good person. Anyone else was liable to fall flat. I guess what I mean to say is I don't know what exactly I would do with absolute power. I'd like to say I would follow in the footsteps of personal heroes like Marcus Aurelius , but do know that I am human and prone to emotional decision making and can be very impulsive when caught unawares. My self discipline isn't in a position for me to say "I'd do the bestest best bestly"

    • @CaptnBojanglez
      @CaptnBojanglez 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      3. My current game of choice is Onward. I'd say the Meta (similar to real life) is always teamwork. It comes in the form of team cohesion, training drills, and a good sense of command.

    • @CaptnBojanglez
      @CaptnBojanglez 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4. My perception of power wasn't changed. However I feel it's because although I am familiar with Focaults ideas, I am not familiar enough to form an opinion on whether or not I agree. On the surface I agree to an extent. I agree that Power is indeed multi tiered and multifaceted. I for example exert some power while parenting my children but hold little power when on a grander scale. I do think though that power is something to be actualized personally and internally. A person weak of mind or spirit is unable to exert true power. When a weaker individual is seen to have power, it takes very little to topple their conception of themselves, it's built on a house of cards. A person of strong spirit and deep humility however remains unshaken when challenged by others trying to exert their power over them.
      This is all very surface level, but I don't think I have quite enough room or time to flesh these out properly. If you're interested I'd be happy to discuss or talk about it over a different medium! Great video by the way, your content is fantastic!

    I think power is too broad of a term to have a singular definition because it can feature in many different ways, but to try to define it I would say it’s the bigger, higher greater than thing. Edit: I just pressed play and it was exactly this so I got this feeling that I would be attacked in the replies but then I remembered it was on your channel :)

    This is AWESOME, Theta....
    but if you're gonna start talking about philosophy, why no Deleuze? Nick Land? Reza Negarestani? I guess there might not seem to be much valuable information in their philosophy to competition, but if we understand freedom correlating with potential and options, I think it's clear that having control over other people is its own kind of freedom, and that taking opponents off the map "smooths out the space" for your team to have more options. Also I think the concepts surrounding desire are very applicable if we see the entire map and its players not as individuals, but as one large machine with their own desires. The more aligned your desires and the concepts surrounding them are with your team, the closer you are with them. But most importantly, the conflict of desires between both teams is, I think, what really drives the game. If both teams understand what they need to do to win, and they both desire to win, I think some very interesting models can develop.

      There is an endless ocean of possibility there. It's just a matter of being able to break down these big, complex subjects to the point where the average TH-cam viewer will sit down and pay attention. That is the struggle.

  • @Ashley-1917

    I have a slight nitpick with your original definition of power. You defined it as getting other people do do what you want, but I think power is more general than that. The way I would define it is simply "the ability to change the world around you". I think by adding the term "people" in the definition, you restricted the definition to social power; the power an individual has over other human beings. I would say that power does not have to be over humans. Power does not even have to come from humans. A river can have immense power over the landscape by carving it's way through the rock. Certainly, humans can have power over nature as well. A dam can have power over that same river by restricting it's flow. This demonstrates the complexity of power because while in this example the river can be said to have power over the landscape, and the dam has power over the river, the dam does not necessarily hold power over the landscape, and over time, the landscape has the power to shift and wipe both away. So while I think power defiantly extends there, it is not limited to human interaction. And whilst nature does exhibit power, power is not natural in the way gravity is natural. In other words, it is not a measurable physical property of matter, but rather it is more the result of emergent behavior between systems of matter.

      Power can indeed be divided into multiple domains. Since my general theme on this channel is competition, I focused on social power.
