    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Frank (Denzel Washington) tries to bribe Richie (Russell Crowe) into letting him go free.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Ridley Scott spins this yarn concerning a Harlem drug kingpin (Denzel Washington) who smuggles heroin into the country by hiding it in the bodies of U.S. soldiers killed during battle in Vietnam. There was a time when no one noticed reserved driver Frank Lucas (Washington), but when the criminal kingpin he was charged with transporting through the city streets suddenly dies, Lucas seizes the opportunity to build his own criminal empire. In the following months, Lucas solidifies his status as Harlem's most innovative drug dealer by delivering a product that is purer than the competitors' and cheaper, as well. When innovative businessman Lukas attempts to go semi-legit by becoming one of the Manhattan borough's biggest civil supporters, however, street-savvy outcast cop Ritchie Roberts (Russell Crowe) begins to sense a sizable shift in the hierarchy of the drug underworld. But Roberts is one of the few honest detectives operating within a corrupt system, and as he sets out to investigate the case, crooked detective Trupo (Josh Brolin) does everything in his power to compromise the integrity of his idealistic counterpart. Upon clearing all of the usual Mafia-connected suspects, Roberts begins to believe that a previously unknown black power player has come out of the woodwork to dominate the local drug trade. While Roberts and Lucas may be operating on opposite sides of the law, the one thing that both men have in common is a strict code of ethics that separates them from their opportunistic colleagues. Now, as a confrontation between the two men becomes inevitable and the fate of each becomes inexorably tied to the other, it gradually becomes apparent that only one of them will emerge from the conflict victorious.

The way Denzel portrayed Frank Lucas in this film made me think that the real Frank Lucas could have been highly successful in an honest profession. That's how intelligent he was. Instead, he CHOSE to be a drug dealer and murderer.

+Livingston Hampton Maybe, maybe not. A lot of BS was going on during that period. No doubt though, Denzel's portrayal of Frank Lucas does make you believe that he was in fact a very intelligent man.

He figured that since he turned it in and received absolutely nothing for it he would be regretful of his decision and would be more willing to accept the second time around. Frank’s issue was he found the only clean detective in a sea of dirty ones.

Interesting how you'll say that about Trump, yet you don't seem to be alarmed that Hillary spent more on her campaign than Trump, even though Hillary has $45 million and Trump has $3 billion, $1 billion was spent on Hillary's campaign compared to Trumps $600 million. I wonder what bribes she took to get that much? Doesn't really align with your bias though does it? The hypocrisy and childish outrage from the left only turns people away from the Democratic party. Interesting to note that the democratic party got it's name because most people wanted slaves, so they felt it was 'democratic'. Democrats try to rationalize by claiming parties somehow 'swapped'. Must've happened just after almost every democrat in congress voted against the Civil Rights Act, eh?

I really like russel crowe's reaction to being asked if he returned the million. He really sends out an embarrassed, nervous, and awkward vibe. The way he fidgets, looks around, and cuts him off. I really get the sense that so many people in his life have looked at him as crazy and naive and a part of him may even agree. When denzel cynically tells him that someone else took the money, russel doesn't hold his ground saying something like, "you can't know that", I think he fully acknowledges that it could be true that returning the money only lead to another crooked cop getting it.

If you mean the ending, where the agent is stuck on the train home with other poor people, I didn't interpret it as the agent's regret at not taking the bribe. I saw it as regret that he brought Jordan Belfort, a self-made formerly poor man, back down to everyone else's level. But it's kept vague for a reason.

Lucas: You know Johnny Law Got It Though,...Right!?.
    Roberts: Maybe..
Lucas: There Ain't No Maybe About It,...You Know He Got It!!..
Lucas: You Turned That Money In, He Took It,...And You Ain't Getting Nothing For It,...Did 'Ja?.....Why'd You Do That??
Absolutely great introduction to the 1-on-1 investigation between Roberts vs Lucas. Or Lucas vs. Roberts. I initially wondered who was interrogating whom? Great cohesion between Denzel and Russell during this scene.
Roberts was initially a bit wet behind the ears on being a prosecuting lawyer. And it definitely seemed as if Lucas was taking advantage of this fact. Roberts interrogation skills were on par. But it was very unique in the fact that Roberts was wearing two hats also a prosecutor. That seems to be rare. But it most likely happened. I was glad to see the good portrayal of someone like Roberts going through the hard work on studying through college on obtaining his degree to become a lawyer despite working full time as a police detective.
I primarily enjoyed this scene the most in the movie. Although it's loosely portrayed as a true story. And of course this scene may not indeed be totally accurate on how the interrogation really went down. I finally enjoyed what the movie finally meant as Frank Lucas was finally brought to justice by Richie Roberts and sent to prison. Despite the fact that only Roberts' supervisor and his partners were among the very few that believed in Roberts investigation of Lucas as being the very top organized criminal in distributing heroin throughout the NYC area.
This was the classic example of despite the fact that it always seems that the criminal gangster knows how to call the shots. And quite a few corrupt cops are in the take, good can prevail against criminal corruption. This movie and era seems to have coincided with Frank Serpico as well when he also helped take down many corrupt cops within the NYPD

I find it funny how a good director or writer can make you cheer for the bad guy. A good example is Darth Vader, because everyone cheers when he enters the room. Another example is Clyde in Law Abiding Citizen (there's a big difference though, and one might argue that Clyde actually is a good guy).

It's always bugged me that Denzel drinks from an obviously empty cup. You can hear that it's empty when he sets it down. You can see the light through it on the reverse angle. Such a small nitpicky thing, but it always takes me out of the scene.

    • @lost-still-lookingwanderin7998
      @lost-still-lookingwanderin7998 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

i have to say you're right about the cup,but it's the PRINCIPAL behind the cup,as in,here's what i offer you, what can you offer me.It comes a lil bit later in the conversation, think of it like a poker chip,at least that's how i saw it.peace.
