Step back in time, along the main street of Colonial Williamsburg, where a quaint 18th-century brick building holds many secrets of colonial fashion.
In our latest Quest Capsule, we explore a captivating trail of history that unveils the Margaret Hunter Millinery Shop, and the lives of three sought-after milliners who ran business in Colonial Williamsburg.
The documentary will take viewers on a journey of discovery, uncovering the forgotten past of Margaret Hunter, her sister Jane Hunter (Charlton), as well as one of Williamsburg’s more assertive businesswomen of her time, Catherine Rathell.
The story resurrects their voices through the business advertisements they took out in the Virginia Gazette, goes inside Margaret Hunter’s old Millinery Shop to get a close-up look at milliners and mantua-makers in action, provides details on the historic origins of the trade, and plenty of other interesting exploration.
Through meticulous research and the examination of old land reports, deeds, and articles…clues from the past, and present, allow us to trace shop locations they were thought to have worked from as their business operations evolved over time. We track down these colonial lots and attempt to unravel the sometimes confusing and mysterious backstories they present.
Margaret Hunter’s MIllinery Shop was not just a place of hat & dress-making but a hub of entrepreneurial spirit, run by enterprising female business owners from the 18th century.
As the story unfolds, we also meet another dynamic milliner, Catherine Rathall. We take a look at her colorful contributions to the colonial millinery trade in early Virginia, which helps to reveal the challenging world in which these women thrived.
The Millinery Shop in Colonial Williamsburg attempts to shed light on the significance of these unsung heroines and their role in shaping the cultural and economic landscape of the mid to late 1700s.
Join us on another exciting journey into the past, to hear and visualize some of the not-as-well-known stories from Margaret Hunter’s Millinery Shop and the remarkable 18th-century female artisans who perfected the millinery trade in Colonial Williamsburg.

Have just finished watching and just had to thank you. Your videos have given me much happiness in the last years!
And this is the crowning one so far. I am from Germany, and a visit to colonial Williamsburg is what got me into reenactment, during my visits with beloved relatives living in Virginia.
Over 10 years have passed since I was able to visit, life has been difficult. But I hope to return to williamsburg once again next year! As an reenactor, the Margaret Hunter shop is, of course, my biggest happy place, and I have always hoped you would make a film about it.
Seeing it made me feel like I was there, and I literally have tears in my eyes🫣.
Colonial Williamsburg truly is my happy place, and through your films I could and can go there, even when I could not. Thank you so much ❤

I love this channel, its reports are magnificent. I had the opportunity to visit the colony 4 years ago and I thought it was a magnificent place, but I have a question for you. On my tour, I did not see anything related to the Native Americans. I did observe a lot about the slaves. You Do you believe that the American Indians lived in the colony and if so could you make a video, thank you very much 🎉

Loved this! Your transitions and overlays are perfect. One of my favorite sites. I owned and operated ‘Best Bib & Tucker for 24 years creating period attire for living history actors and docents. A fascinating trade. Knowing the background just heightened my interest. Thank you for this view. We will be in the ‘Burg for thanksgiving. Can’t wait.

I feel the same way everytime I visit places like Greenfield Village here in Dearborn , Michigan . It's on the same level of Williamsburg but much smaller ..they have places like Mark Twains house , Edison 1st lab and the bicycle shop the Dayton brothers had. .all kinds of folks thru the years. Best museum for so many reasons

I have two woolen capes and corset from the Millenary Shop.
I Love Colonial Williamsburg, just NOT the overseer Society that RUNS Colonial Williamsburg. My church for the last 44 years is Bruton Parish Episcopal Church.
