The contemporary category of 'plus size' is hugely limited and beholden to the arbitrary norms of the fashion industry. Corsets are only torture if you tie them too tight or wear one that is too small for your body. My sister has worn several dresses with corsets and they never hurt her. I've worn a corset dress once or twice and it never hurt me. As long as they are the right size and not tied way tighter than they are supposed to, they are just fine.
@@fruitygarlic3601 Well, I would think it would be difficult to sell purses when functional pockets are an option. Personally I was thinking some sort of saddlebag set up. Like pockets, but hanging outside the clothing.
@@112steinway That's kind of similar to what I was saying with the fanny pack trend. It's died down a little bit, but I can still see it persisting later on because of the practicality. A lot of fast fashion retailers do prioritise money over...y'know, fashion. Whether they're avoiding putting pockets in women's clothes because they want to sell purses or cut down on materials it's annoying. At least some skinny jeans have reasonably-sized pockets in the back.
@@minimooster7258 What? Do you mean fanny packs? They were a trend item a little while ago, so there are a lot of affordable ones that are designed to look halfway decent; some of them are pretty cute.
I actually thought what happens when the lady menstruates? No knickers to place something in to catch the flow or was some undergarment worn on their time of the month?
@@kimmi2922 someone answered above that they wore some kind of a garment, but I think most importantly once you started having kids, which was pretty young, you just didn't have so much time in between to menstruate.
It’s actually a calculated decision made by the fashion industries to make more money. If women’s clothes have smaller pockets, we need something else to carry our things. Thus, the purse. Manufacturers make pockets smaller on purpose so we’re forced to buy more bags. Honestly, you’re better off sewing your own pocket into your leggings or altering a pair of men’s trousers to your taste.
Kelsey Rink well... why do we buy those clothes? If no one bought them while demanding bigger pockets then they'd be forced to get their heads out of their butts and listen. Just now I googled "big pocket women's jeans" www.shopstyle.com/browse?fts=big+pocket+jeans+for+women they exist. Many styles. Stop buying clothes that don't work for you.
Maids did most of the work also lower class also wore similar clothes and did all house hold chores .. it's not at all impossible to work wearing these clothes
The thing is, they didn’t need to bundle up the way we do because the corsets (or what ever they called them here) kept the woman’s core body warmer. Plus with all those layers of skirts, they only really needed a small sweater for the arms
I've always admired these dresses in pictures, and I knew they had multiple parts and layers, but I did NOT realize just how taxing it was to get dressed in one until this video.
"The average girl awoke at noon, usually exclaiming 'FUCK! I DID IT AGAIN!' after a glance at the clock. She stands, quickly removing her sweat pants, tank top, and underwear. She replaces the underwear with a clean pair, and, though it was customary, neglects to put on a bra. She rummages on the floor for anything that may pass as clean, eventually finding a shirt she dislikes, which she wears over a pair of jeans, which are ripped in multiple places, then hurries to the kitchen for coffee."
The average teen in 2017 would first put on a underwear layer, and then a shirt, and sweatpants. The sweatpants may also be substituted with yoga pants. A sweratshirt or jacket might also be added to the outfit. That...that's it.
I think the style of corset from this era is one of the most beautiful and flattering corsets ever! It looks so lovely on everybody type I’ve seen it on, I really hope to have one some day. I also love how, if you look at it closely, the maids are wearing the same style of clothing as the rich lady, just in simpler, hardier fabrics and simpler in terms of having no ruffles etc. but I just love that everyone had access to the same styles just using what they could afford to make their own versions
Sophia Koeppen I assume they'd typically only dress once a day early in the morning then undress in the late afternoon bathe and put on a fairly simple night gown
No, I don't think she would. I think she'd realise that fashions have changed. The only thing that might shock her is the universal free-flowing hair of today. For a woman of her time, going out and about with loose hair was the same as going out in your underwear today...
If time travelers brought these people comfy sweatpants and hoodies, that's what they would be dying to quickly get home to wear. 😄 Imagine if they had modern comfy flip flops? Ha ha!
3000 years from now they'll be showing how the woman dressed now. "They used to carry around bags, that could be carried on the arm, as woman were not allowed pockets."
I just woke my husband up at 11pm while in bed....laughing hysterically and saying “ oh to have a bloody pocket big enough!” It’s okay, he’s drowsy and is looking at me like I’m insane 🤣🤣🤣
The alternative to the pins was stitching the dress to the undergarments and at the end of the day a lady was cut out of her clothing by her ladies maid.
@@toenailvolunteer3454 so what do you do during summer?? You can't be COMPLETELY covered right? Like you'll sweat like a pig if you are completely covered
@@aarya1107 sadly muslim women in some islamic country still have to be covered during summer. the only time for them to be uncovered during is their own house or any private places where no one can sees them, it think.
One time in school, I showed a guy sitting next to me how small my pockets were. He then gathered a bunch of other guys to see and all of them were in shock.
For those wondering about the wooden thing she slid under her corset, here is the answer: A busk (also spelled busque) is a rigid element of a corset at the centre front of the garment. They were intended to keep the front of the corset straight and upright, and were typically made of wood, ivory, or bone slipped into a pocket and tied in place with a lace called the busk point. These busks were often carved and decorated, or inscribed with messages, and were popular gifts from men to their sweethearts.
@@whytho7858 I thought it was a shiv, because in the start of the video it says "no knickers were worn". So, I figured she took that shiv in case someone got under all 900 layers to try to get her lol.
You must not be a woman, lol. They were living the dream in that one way. Pockets in every dress, please. Everything else sucked, but they had pockets unless they lost them! Lol
Not as hard as you think, considering there were no knickers worn. Just get yourself properly positioned over the chamber pot or commode. Wiping can be... interesting, though.
Atleast you bother with jeans , I mean, I usually stick to shorts and tank tops (but then again for most of the year its above 35 degrees celcius outside where I live .
Brownfox ikr, it’s not because it was more protected..because men are not attracted by a woman’s short clothes..it depends on a man’s inner mind itself..I hate men who blame it on women. Come on! We need freedom, but I wanna go back cause that looks sooooo cool! And it would be comfortable
Fascinating...I love to learn how they dressed in those times....at my age I wouldn't mind being dressed like this..I find it so feminin yet comfortable...thank you..will be watching this channel now..❤
Julie Douglas yes but when the English colonized countries like Australia or the warmer parts of the US, they STILL dressed like this. They didn’t often take into account the climate when it came to dressing “properly “!
Although it was colder, and it was a lot of layers compared to today's standards, the clothing was made of more natural fibers. This meant that it would be more breathable, if comparing it to today's clothing, as much of modern day fashion uses polyester which has plastic.
This was so accurate. Thank you very much for this video. Now I finally understand how to put a stomacher where it should be. And I was very surprised when you were explaining those pockets which I haven't even heard about :)
I never realized how many pieces went into a dress like this. I always assumed it was a couple petticoats and then the final top layer but in actuality it a bunch of different pieces.. I'm also still pretty jazzed about the idea that they had pockets in their gowns back then
They didn't wash themselves, they just put on more parfume. I mean, great times for fashion, horrible times for hygiene, right? I'm pretty shore that's why they caried a fan. (Just my logical thinking, not, like, researshed that or something) Or it was just a fashion statement or something 'religieus'. Like: do not show when you're smiling or carry a fan. ( Not really religieus, but I hope you get what I mean)
I have made a gown just like this but with a sweet white cotton fabric with pink and blue flowers on it and I bought enough to make the skirt along with two different dress styles, one that fastens up the center front with hooks and the other being more like the one in the video but instead of pins to secure it, the stomacher fastened over with hooks and bars on both sides of the robe, hidden by ruffles.
they didn't or had maids to help them out (and I'd assume that in case of a secret affair, they had to pick the maids that they trusted perhaps and wouldn't gossip?) or just had to wait until night time :))
@Kayda 1319 They didn't wear panties back then so one could just lift up the skirts and petticoats for illicit affairs (this is also how they were able to go to the bathroom without taking off their entire gown)
Might be because women’s clothes these days have a focus on being fitted around the waist/ butt area to show off curves while the larger skirts made it easier to hide pockets. I just want to wear fancy dresses everyday hhh

@@fruitygarlic3601 the issue is that they look ridiculous. Practical? Certainly, but like I can't imagine wearing one

why don't you make yourself a set, can't be all that hard, you might start a new fad.
Kathy Brinkman I got jeans the other day. NO POCKETS. I mean at least us women have purses
i mean, in our defense, at least our pockets don't have the risk of falling off-
It’s actually a calculated decision made by the fashion industries to make more money.

I guess that 200 years from now there will be a video about how we used to get dressed in this era.
Idk... i suppose internet will still be a thing in the future so they can see it on "historical" videos on yt

Exactly what I was thinking

For those wondering about the wooden thing she slid under her corset, here is the answer:
A busk (also spelled busque) is a rigid element of a corset at the centre front of the garment.
They were intended to keep the front of the corset straight and upright, and were typically made of wood, ivory, or bone slipped into a pocket and tied in place with a lace called the busk point. These busks were often carved and decorated, or inscribed with messages, and were popular gifts from men to their sweethearts.

yes, and winters in europe used to be much COLDER back in the day!
Although it was colder, and it was a lot of layers compared to today's standards, the clothing was made of more natural fibers. This meant that it would be more breathable, if comparing it to today's clothing, as much of modern day fashion uses polyester which has plastic.

I’ve always wondered why women in earlier times carried fans around. Now I know why.
They didn't wash themselves, they just put on more parfume. I mean, great times for fashion, horrible times for hygiene, right? I'm pretty shore that's why they caried a fan.
