Roln1out G I’ve read Yang’s book, it’s good! It certainly highlights the issues that illustrate how hyper capitalism wrecked smaller communities.
However, the stark difference between Yang’s book and Giridharadas’s book is the solutions. Yang’s solution is to put more money in your pocket without changing too much about the systemic issues underlying the problem because he believes people with solve the issue themselves individually. Giridharadas believes structural change in the tax code is needed to prevent plutocrats from controlling our society and the way it functions.
One solution offers individual contribution while the other offers structural contribution, and depending on how you view the world and it’s issues, one solution will appeal stronger to you than the other.

After watching this interview, the part of Anand’s argument that Trevor kept asking for clarification or explanation of was the fact that when you file taxes here in America if you make large charitable donations, the government allows you to deduct that amount out of your income.
This ends up meaning that if you are a billionaire who has moved his money around so there is very little “income” to be taxed in the first place, then he makes sure his donations are super huge. In many cases this means that billionaires can actually get huge refunds from the government plus they get the good PR for their generous donations.
The people who aren’t wealthy don’t realize those donations are actually from the actual tax payers. So our tax system is actually helping the wealthy horde their wealth, while they are able to appear generous and socially aware.

    • @herb369nichols

No surprise there since it's the wealthy who wrote those tax laws!!

    • @mallen1317
      @mallen1317 3 ปีที่แล้ว

no! this doesn't make sense, you don't 'get huge refunds from gov." for moving money around - if the billionaire has 'little income" they can still give money they want to donate to 'cause of their choosing' instead of trusting gov to do it - many of these people don't even make it known publicly that they give

    • @laneyb8911

Also when they make these "huge donations" they are not actually making donations. They stick it in a special funding account that is untaxed. The money can sit in the account for indefinitely, never actually going to the donation recipient. Some of these accounts even accrue interest. They then take the interest out-untaxed, and move them like Anad said so it is not taxable income. So not only, are they making money off of their donations that don't actually get donated, they also don't get taxed of their income.

Trevor's face was growing pale toward the end of the interview. I take it he felt quite uncomfortable and did not know HOW to make light of this serious subject, of which Noah is now much more of the 'problem' than when he was back in Africa.
As others have mentioned, he has his own charity in Africa, and I think he personally felt conflicted by Anand's closing arguments.
I have not see Noah truly speechless before. But I think his 'bilionaire buddy' comment was the best he could come up with, sort of knee-jerk style. And we all know how close to the truth a bad joke is.
He is part of the neo-liberal class. If you trust the dnc and think they're not gop lite, then you should be happy with Noah's take on money and politics.
I recommend paying close attention, now the focus is on the most important presidential election we may see in our lifetimes.
just my opinion, sorry to carry on.
AND it's nice for you to support Noah. Seems like a good guy still . . .but power and money in most cases does eventually corrupt. Few rise above. This is why so many are mentioning a rare stalwart - Jon Stewart.

Good thing all the money is coming out of Purdue instead of their pockets, now they can just pass the fines on to their employees. Or they could just declare bankruptcy on the company, either way they're not taking the hit. Look at Amazon, why does Jeff Bezos pay no income tax? Supposedly because he invests in his own business, which is something literally every business owner does, and they still pay their income tax.
