ESV Thinline vs ESV Omega - Horween vs Goatskin

Horween is BACK! The ESV Thinline Heirloom from Crossway is very similar to the Omega, but with a slightly smaller footprint, slightly thinner, and an 8pt font. After having experienced both, I must admit, the goatskin is still my favorite, but there is a lot to love about the Horween. It is easily distressed to give you a unique look that is custom to your use and your choices. I would like see how a gold foil stamp would look on the spine, and I’d love to see a perimeter gilt line on the liner, but it’s also fine that they went for a more rugged and easy to wear in look.
This one is printed and bound by the legendary Royal Jongbloed in the Netherlands, and is built to last. My one major complaint will be the same complaint I give every time with the Crossway Heirloom series and that is those dreadful ribbons! Too short, too dinky! (Lack of line-matching would also be a minor complaint.) Come on Crossway fix this! I also feel the Horween is a touch expensive, however, the leather is quite special and appeals to an audience willing to pay high dollar for it.

For me the single most important thing about a Bible is the quality of the paper. As someone who struggles with eyesight if the paper is good I can read down to a 10-point font. If the paper is poor even a 14-point font is a struggle to read. Jmho. Excellent review good sir

Paper is a big deal. This is really good paper but it is thin. The opacity is really good though.

Thanks for the video! I think the small ribbons are used, especially on a small Bible like this, because wider ribbons end up covering up the text on one side or the other because the text is close to the gutter. I have some very nice rebound Bibles that I actually wish had narrower ribbons because I have to keep moving the ribbons out of the way every time I go from the left page to the right page. It’s especially annoying if I’m preaching a text that is partly on the left page and partly on the right page. Every time I go back and forth I have to move the ribbon. When it’s a narrow ribbon like these, it can lie there in the gutter without covering up any text. That’s extremely helpful especially if I’m preaching while holding the Bible in my hand. When in the hand, wide ribbons get in the way of the text even when the text is sufficiently far from the gutter because moving the Bible around in my hand inevitably leads to wide ribbons getting jostled out of the gutter and covering some of the text. So while I get the complain about thin ribbons, I’m always rooting for Crossway to keep them narrow so I can keep preaching out of their Bibles comfortably. 😊

the irony is i don't want the larger font. it makes the words per line too few which reduces readability. if you can't see, obviously that's a factor. but for me, i'd always pick the more readable line width...

AFAIK, the ESV Thinlines from Crossway don't have line-matching. Can't say it was a problem when I was going through mine (not Horween; buffalo leather version).

My favourite ESV Bible is the Large Print Wide Margin Bible. I have good eyesight, but I don't go below 10 point. As I get older, I know smaller text will become more difficult to read. I don't want to hasten the process. Plus I intend on having my Bible for a very long time, so large print all the way for me, and good paper.

Are they going to do the large print thinline (non reference) in Horween as well? I have that in genuine leather and love the format. Easier to read for sure. Has same ghosting issues but one gets past that pretty quick. Would consider upgrading if it comes along.
