Once you've mastered autofocus point selection on the fly, you gain another level of accomplishment as a wildlife photographer, one more tool in the bag! Kudo's! (Yes I know this video is from 2018) As I write this in 2020 during the pandemic - I'm practicing my autofocus skills out the window during lock down, on local birds. Gotta keep my skills sharp.
Hi just bought a 7Dmkii your video was so helpful to set up my camera . It was quiet a step up from the 60D Thanks for making the video so easy to follow and understand
Just got my own 7D mark II today, needless to say your tutorials have been a tremendous help to setup some of the AF options! (quite a huge step-up from my EOS 1300D)... Out at one of our migration hotspots tomorrow for a field test, hopefully some nice birds will show up
Some great tips there. I never used to use all the points selected until I was at RSPB Old Moor (I think) and a massive flock of golden plovers came in in horrendous light. I don’t often use it but I now like to know it’s there. Another good video, and it’s really good to know I’m not the only birder still using the 7DII. I’ve just looked at the price new and it’s still around £1400 which I was pretty shocked about.
Hi, before I do any of these great tips (which aren’t working) I think I have a pre problem. When I press the back right button to select focal point the selector won’t move it. I have been having issues with this for a while and I don’t know how it happened which is why I was searching how to fix it and ended up on your video. I tried going into the first custom control you are suggesting but I set that up but still the selector button will not move the focal point around the screen. Thanks. I hope that makes sense.
Your videos are incredibly helpful. I've been using the higher megapixel 750d, I love the camera but my new 7d mk ii is just a beast regardless of a few less pixels. Thank you for the videos 😁
@@anirbanadhikary101 Ok for a cropped sensor, but not amazing. It really helps using a dedicated noise removing program: th-cam.com/video/ZOZckl9JMiA/w-d-xo.html
Thanks a lot for this video. I was already using the 3rd tip you provided but initial 2 were very useful. Cheers, Varun Chopra (India) Corbett National Park
Well intentioned video and extremely useful tips. Would have served the purpose lots better if you had kept the camera screen in focus all along and kept the audio explanations in the b/g.
Thanks for the video. Does anyone know if this camera has a profile like setting that let's you say have 2 different AF Points that you can just toggle back and forth to ?
At about 0:24 you mention being able to operate the camera without looking at the buttons. I have shot with the Canon 7D and 7Dii, Canon switched the sequence of the 4-buttons at the top right side of the camera from the 7D to the 7Dii. Why in hell did they do that? It's crazy. Why fix something that "ain't broke"?
9 AF POINTS set... Oh yes..This is for me the confirm that the old cameras was better. I think a lot of points are only confusion! Fortunately It is possible to reduce them!
Hi Margaret, you can check out the blog post I did on it where I got screenshots that might help 🙂 espenhelland.com/canon-7d-ii-focus-system-top-3-settings-tips/
Apologies for that, been working to fix that in recent videos. If you're still interested you can check out the step by step blog post here: espenhelland.com/canon-7d-ii-focus-system-top-3-settings-tips/
Only had my 7D mkii for about 3 years and never knew about those options - thanks.
!
Hello, my dear friend.
Please tell us more about the settings for the video.
Thanks!
Great tips and it is very helpful.

Thanks Espen, this is going to make shooting much easier, great work.
Good to hear it! Thanks Sean :)
Thanks Espen, considering swapping my 5d mk IV for the 7d ii so this is really useful.
Tip no 3 is something I hadn't been aware of. Very useful, thanks.
Nice one! glad you found it useful :)
I had just decided to try and make myself do back button focus but these are great tips to get around it. Thank you!
Hope it works out for you 🙂
Thanks for the tips, Espen. This was a truly useful video!
Thanks Saúl! Glad you found it useful 🙂

Thanks again for the kind words Mark 🙂 I'm also amazed to see how the 7D has held its value! And very happy about it 😁
Great tips. Thank you
Thanks Tony, glad you could take something from it!
Thank you!!
Great video!
Thank you!
Thanks for the tips. I have the 7dmkii but have yet to go into the settings and make my own custom controls but now I really think I should 😅
Took me forever before I even looked at it, but I'm so much quicker with the controls now :)
@@EspenHelland Thanks for the video :)
This just saved me!!!! Thank you!
Glad it helped!
thank you for taking time to explain.

Great info but I use a 1x4 converter as well. I take it that by using this add on it reduces the focus points greatly?
I think it does a bit yeah. Have a video using it myself: th-cam.com/video/2E92FHupBlE/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for your reply Espen. Love your name btw! I’ll certainly look at the video and maybe get some tips.

S. Gopalakrishnan thanks for the feedback 👍🏻
Wow. Thank you

Thanks for the video. Does anyone know if this camera has a profile like setting that let's you say have 2 different AF Points that you can just toggle back and forth to ?
Hi Don, you could use one of the Costum Profiles for that (C1-C3). I did a video on setting them up: th-cam.com/video/ZS2U5u2xuSQ/w-d-xo.html

That's frustrating! I'd be lost if the buttons changed.
Got them selected, but it does not work. Any help?
Thanks for the video. Unfortunately I'm an expert fumbler

I’ve tried everything this video just won’t play!
Andy Roye that's odd. There's a link to the a blog post that explains it in the description of the video.
Yaaaaawn.
too fast can't get my eyes focused before he has gone onto somewhere else

Way too fast going back and forth between you and camera back..... can't keep up with what you are doing.
Paul Harding early days bad editing. I made a blog post of it, there's a link in the description.
Hhh?
Yaaaawn. Has been explained in a MYRADE of videos before and much better. Boring.
Choppy audio..... can't understand what you are saying ?
