Thanks for sharing! It hit home with me, not a boating accident but a tree stand! 2013 oct 14th on a Monday morning I went to the woods for a bow in East TN and had checked my stand a month before season which was a lock on and when I climbed up mind steps that morning I pulled on the stand to ensure it was tight. Seemed ok but as soon as my right foot put pressure on the platform I was falling backwards, later to find that the top strap had broke. Was on top of a mountain fell 25’ and landed on my back and bounced down the hill a good 10’ and was still conscious and tried to move and new something was wrong. I had a harness on but never had the opportunity to tie off! Lifeline would have been only thing that would have prevented the fall! Had a cell phone which I dug out of my pocket knowing I didn’t have cell service but tried to call my wife who worked nights as an er nurse and the call went through but she didn’t answer! So I proceeded to push my luck and called 911 and they answered. On the phone for an hour and a lot went on during that hour but my son finally brought the search people to my location and as my son picked my phone up which was still connected to the 911 operator he told me I had no service! And none of the emergency personal had service either! I tell everyone that God above made that phone call! There are so many other details I recall from that day but it’s a long story! I ended up having a T7 complete injury severing my spinal cord! I still hunt but from a wheelchair! Always be prepared and never give up! God is good! Just wanted to share with you and enjoy watching you you tube!

One thing I have learned after being in the military for the last 33 years is things are good until they are not... and that usually happens fast and without warning. Your video is testament to that. Your situation could have ended much differently, I am so glad it didn't and hopefully someone can learn from it. There are some great lessons to be learned here. Thanks for posting it, takes a lot of guts and humility to do that.

    Wow glad you are ok.
Jeremy back in the spring I was scouting for turkey about 30 minutes from my house on government property. I had walked approximately 2 miles back on some property that has no ATV trails no foot trails now nothing. After I got about 2 miles back I run into a guy that was also scouting for turkeys which really shocked me. we begin walking togetherAnd after about five minutes I noticed I was sweating profusely I did not feel well. This guy walked back to my truck and get me something to drink and came back when he got back to me he noticed I was not doing well he went and got help I have had two heart attacks back in these woods if I would’ve had to been alone I would’ve never made it out of the woods. The Lord bless me that day there is no doubt in my mind!

Jeremy, thank goodness you are all right.
Two years ago I was paddling out a big shark bait at the outer banks Hatteras area. Just after dropping the bait I turned the kayak and started coming in when a wave hit me while I was sideways and turn me over. I wasn't wearing my life vest but didn't think nothing about swimming the 250 yards back to the bank. However, once I made it where I could stand up I let go of the kayak only to have a wave grab it and clobber me with it. It knocked me out and had my friends not been close by I would have been meeting Jesus. Thankfully my I was drug up on shore and revived. I thanked all those around me but thanked the Lord most of all. Just makes you wonder if he's telling you something. God bless you and Daniel. Y'all's channel is my favorite!

Hey, great content. Kentucky boy here and prob a little older than you. I almost died duck hunting out of a canoe in 46-degree water. Had all my gear on and sank about 20 feet to the bottom. My boots are still in the mud in the bottom of that pond. Im still here because I believe in God, and my wife was carrying our first child. Ended up in the hospital with pneumonia, but I lived. I have never gotten in a canoe since, but I did go back on the water kayak fishing. I'm glad you made it out safe. Could have lost your life.

First, glad your ok! Really like your content. I know it took a lot to put this out there. Hard for prideful men to admit things. I'm 63 been hunting and fishing by my self since I was 10. Haven't hunted out of Alabama very much. But have hunted and fished from 150 miles offshore to the mountains of north alabama. And Murphy's law can show up at any time. With all the videos getting people out to hunt, be mobile. This is something that needed to be put out there. Not glad it happened to you. But so thankful to you for putting this out there. I think you have done a great service to the hunting community! God works in mysterious ways!

Like most of us I am a lot more safety conscious than I was when I was younger. We get smarter with age I guess. I have a standing rule that I will not break. Glad you lived to tell the tale. I got a 14' semi-v hung sideways on a tree once. One of my passengers jumped to the up river side and we took on water quick. He jumped back fortunately. After I got both passengers calmed down we all eased to the bow and the boat turned off the tree. The motor started on the second pull after that scary moment. I guess what I'm saying is never underestimate the power a flooded river. Thanks for sharing.

So happy that you made it through it safely. I used to duck hunt the Mississippi River by boat when I was much younger. Older and wiser now. I whitewater canoed for years when I was about your age and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our principal season was winter because that's when the rivers were running. We NEVER went out on a river in the winter with less than three boats; one paddler could be disabled; another could render aid while the third could go for help (this was before the days of cell phone communication). We also would never allow a winter paddler to go with our group without proper winter attire (wet suit or dry suit) capable of keeping a wet man alive when he became wet. I love your videos; just wanted to pass along a word of caution from a guy who has comfortably survived many overturned boats in the winter. Thanking God for your safe escape.

Great video. I’ve flipped twice. One time in a canoe with a girlfriend when I was young. Came up against a tree like you did (out of my control just like your incident) she spun around and put her weight on the outside and we flipped immediately…lost everything in the canoe. The next time was up in Canada on a remote “fly in” lake with my youngest son…leaned on the rail and flipped me out of the boat just like that. Fortunately the boat didn’t flip and he threw a life jacket to me as the wind was blowing the boat away from me. I had taught him how to start the motor and run the boat the day before…good thing! Im 62 now and know that im am not as sure footed as I used to be ….sad but that’s reality. Love your videos. Lets keep goin as long as we can!

Thanks for the insightful life lesson that things can go south real quick and that you need to have a contingency plan for any possible mishap. I am 60 and still climb trees to archery hunt for deer. But, my three boys love waterfowl hunting and I am a nervous wreck when they are out on the river in these freezing temps pursuing ducks and geese. Less margin for error on the water, especially in the winter (in MD). To think about the old climbers we were using 40 years ago with no safety features and no cell phones. Whew! Thanks again for this public service announcement and all of your great content!

    Extra tips
Strap your gear down so it stays with the boat and always start your motor and let it warm up before moving. Use a GPS fishfinder and chartplotter, and add a card to show you the river channel and creeks. You can use the tracks on the chart so you know where you have been.

Buddy, Im so glad you had the mind to go and get that life jacket! I wish everyone really understood the dangers and the power of moving water.
I went to Co after watching your Wy trip. The dangers for me now is more my age and physical condition. I just turned 50 and my career has turned more into a desk job and im not in the condition I was just a couple of years ago. But man, my heart and gut still thinks im 25 years old. I got up on that mountain the first day and got dehydrated, even with plenty of water. It wouldnt have been a stretch to say I could have gotten in trouble. When I finally got back to my partners, my speech was slurred and i wasnt right in the head. I learned some hard lessons on that trip.

Glad you were not killed. I have a 14.5' Old Towne canoe, and i run some rough sections of river alone fairly often, i was going to share a pic of my setup but comments would not allow it. I built a rack that is strapped with rachet straps to the canoe, it sits on top and hangs off both sides of the canoe. I have velcro straps that very securly hold a pair of coolers, one on each side several inches above the water line with normal loads. I run the canoe backwards so my weight is more in the middle and it balances good, and it does not interfere with paddling. I run class 2 water pretty often and would not be worried about a class 3 with this rig. The coolers keep you from tipping and they act as a pile of extra storage for gear. I would bet with a little figuring you could do that to you boat. Be safe.

I am glad you had cell service and are OK. Stuff can be replaced. Thank God for 1st responders! I once had an episode where I was trout fishing the Kickapoo river in the spring in western Wisconsin. The river was high and I thought I was standing in the river only to discover on my next step I was actually standing on the bank. Needless to say I went straight down into the water and my waders were quickly filling with water. I had a friend with me but he was about 100 yards ahead of me and unaware of what happened. By the grace of God I was able to grab a small branch and pull myself out of the water. It took all the strength I had to get out of that river. Whew! I go off grid 4x4 access only to the black river in the San Carlos Indian reservation fishing for small mouth bass a couple times per year. I have come across some people who were unaware in dire straights over the years. It is important to expect the best but be prepared for the worst.

Thank you for sharing your story. Glad you’re alright! We’ve done quite a few canoe and kayak trips in the summertime. Many a dumped boat in the tree rescues! The force from that river is no joke. We’ve saved people, boats, belongings, etc. Luckily I’ve never had to help recover a body.

I am glad you are okay. You don’t have to be on a mountain far from home for disaster to happen.
I have been very focused on being safe since I fell from a tree in 1996. I have climbed trees my whole life deer hunting, lock ons or climbers. But I was in a hurry to hang a stand one day and took the shortcut down. Didn’t used a safety harness. It is a miracle I survived with no injuries because I fell about 30 feet and landed amongst a bunch of relatively small saplings I had cut off for shooting lanes. God gave me an opportunity. And I thank him for it every day. I know many people who were not as fortunate as me, and I know of even more who didn’t make when a boat and high water was involved.

Well sorry about your gun and stuff. As far as the gun i would be tore up about losing my gun, but i hunt with my dads rifle that has passed away so for me the river could have the boat and all the other stuff. Just hope it wasnt a gun with that kind of sentimental value. Glad ya got your boat back and got it fished out of the river. All I can say is "thank the lord for watching over you while you was stuck" and give thanks to the first responders for getting to you to help you out. Thanks for the story and the channel. God bless ya and ya family. God bless everyone else too.

Glad u are OK. Love the videos. I had an incident on a WMA myself when I first started. I did not bring battery pack for my phone. It died on me before I could get out the woods and had to spend the night. I remembered a video I watched when I started hunting about cotton balls soaked in Vaseline. I keep a pill bottle on me now with Vaseline soaked cotton balls and a lighter in a separate pill bottle. I don't use a boat but don't want them to get wet. Started a small fire and had to stay in the woods that night as I did not know the area well and walked 1/2 mile from my truck. Grandfather taught me if u are lost in the woods at night without proper gear do not run or wonder around mindless and just stay at current location and wait until sunrise before u try and retrace your steps. Like u said the woods are another animal at night. Those Cottonballs soaked in Vaseline always light. Glad I had this with me on my only mishap so far

I am about same age as you (56) and hunt all over by myself. Thankfully I have never been wet with out transportation.

Something bad will happen to everyone if you spend enough time in the outdoors. A sense of confidence come with experience. But wisdom comes with age. All of us are guilty of becoming over confident in equipment or machinery. Glad you were one of the lucky ones. Hopefully myself and others will stay reminded of just how easy it is to take little things for granted- like a boat motor starting because it starts 99 times out of 100. That 1 time is the inevitable-- Please keep making videos. Glad you are well and it made me literally laugh when you said your dog gives rve delivery drivers a hard time!!! ;)
