- 🔥 Let's talk about the 2024 Development Road Map for The Lord of the Rings Online. In this video I will talk about each quarter of the year in detail and give my thoughts on the topics discussed. From a new expansion at the end of the year to updates to kinships and hobbies, there should be a little something for every LOTRO player in 2024. 🔥

The open world of lotro is really the only reason I come back for a few months every year, and more hobbies/things to do in world, at the player house, and in kinships would likely keep me invested at least an extra month or two every year. I'm always suggesting new hobbies on the forums, for one I think smoking should be turned into a full fledged hobby, pipe crafting and custom animations for smoking specific pipe weeds. I also think since the world is so beautiful, that walking simulator type quest/long distance traveling should be implemented. I think the example I gave for one such scenario was Gandolf coming the player house and offering a walking simulation quest where the player walks with Gandolf from house or point a to point b while Gandolf tells you a little of his experience in the area or the history of the area. There could be several of these through out the story, where the walks get longer and longer. You could have one where a group of adventurers need something done somewhere, so yall walk there in game, making camp along they way, telling stories, perhaps defending yourselves or camp as you go depending on the quest. So much could be done with this simple concept. I also think being able to set up a camp in woods to play survival/hunting mini games would be another fine hobby idea.
The idea of SSG dropping another full Expansion only 1 year post Umbar scares me. The issues with that release and its rollout make me worry for what a second full-fat, full-price expansion this close (and with the known factor of their staffing interruption) scares me. It puts that little fear of "we need some more money so here's another quick thing" in my brain. I'd love for them to in one or more ways knock this one out of the park and prove me wrong, but yeah I'm a bit leery.
I am 100% with you there.
@@Bludborn I suppose my hope is that they had most of an expansion's worth of content already in some state of development before/during the time they lost staff, and have been able to take that framework and finish/expand on it rather than turning around a full XPack in a year. Like, having at least a head start with content they started but shelved. And ideally, not at the same price tiers as Umbar (I'm looking at you Daybreak/EG7, make up for this one here).
While SSG is shying away from the "mini-expansion" terminology, I think we can safely assume it is more like that (i.e. War of Three Peaks and Before the Shadow) than a full expansion (like Gundabad and Umbar, where we got a level cap increase, new class, etc.). It will likely included fewer quests and features, though it does look like they're aiming somewhat bigger with this one compared to previous "mini-expansions", given the inclusion of a full instance cluster. SSG has been alternating between full and "mini" expansions for several years now for both games (with DDO getting its "full" expansion this year). While there is understandable concern about being able to deliver the instance cluster when Umbar's has launched yet, I personally wouldn't worry about them having an expansion in the Fall.
In addition to the fantastic summary you do blud, the technoesque background music is much appreciated as well! Some of my best lotro memories are group instances with lotro music turned off and sounds of trance playing from my pc
haha, i love this! Sometimes you just gotta vibe and run some dungeons!
I'm excited for kinship update finally!
Also Orion on the forums noted nothing is mini about the expansion, so it will be full blown one just without a level increase of course.
interesting that there is no level increase. Can't say im either mad or happy about that
@@Bludborn Until we hear otherwise, I think it is safe to assume we will get a level cap increase every two years for the foreseeable future, with a smaller expansion every off year.
The UI is unplayable for me on 4k Monitor. Its also not on the road map for 2024. Sad because i use to play it years ago.
I'm excited for VIP update and areas east of Umbar.
Yup. Same. Very curious about what they have planned for VIPs. They need to drive people subbing again.
@@Bludborn Long as the "systems" like LIs and Essences have such a hugely monetized strangehold on the game, dunno what they can do to pull people to go VIP anymore.
Valid point. It needs to have incentive and value or it won’t work.
Thanks for sharing this information and your view on it. I'm thinking about coming back and giving LOTRO a try again.
You should!
Are skirmishes worthwhile again? I remember moria/Isengard days they were great addictive fillers of the game. If you wanted a piece of jewellery you could do skirmishes and they were like mini dungeons. They were great ways to just work on your character. Im trying to get back into the game and want to know what do they bring to the game now?
Good video Blud, some very interesting stuff there. I'm quite looking forward to a 4th crafting profession, though I'd really love to see a change to the level gating, where you can't gather from a resource node unless you have that tier of the profession. I'd rather see a system where you can gather from any node at any level of proficiency, but have a higher chance of failure the lower the skill level, and a greater chance of critical success, rare crafting mats, etc., the higher the skill level.
Some new universal crafting tools for metal-smiths to craft would also be welcome
They were looking at the craft level gating and actually were going to remove that with Umbar and work backwards. There was a large technical issue they found with it though. Don’t know if they will be able to do it.
As an apparently-will-never-reach-endgame player (haha), the Summer quarter is looking packed! Also mostly looking forward to the tech-side updates that can't be on the letters~
I'm generally happy that the letter isn't too packed which will (hopefully) give them the time to release and polish stuff not too much later. Given how busy last year was, I was under the impression that the team was kinda stretched too thin in places, not too mention the poaching happening at the end of the year.
Thanks for putting your thoughts down and sharing.
Looking forward to being able to have a fourth profession on my chadoctor what I didn't know was that blizzard opened a studio in Boston And stole people from standing Stone games. I can't imagine why blizzard would ever open a studio in Boston
SWTOR gave an XP bonus for being in a guild. That gave you a reason to be in a guild. I'd like to see that.
I’d like to see any reason to be in a guild other than it being an easier way to find a group of good people to play with.
Hi,
I just want a map and a ui update/revamp to hd at least. New player, not that interested in the endgame for now.
UI is being worked on. Hopefully sometime this year(ish)
Yea, UI and maps are really outdated, hopefully they fix it soon
Thank you for your insightful video. I did not know that SSG lost so many employees. Why did they jump ship? Maybe you mentioned it before, so I'll search your other videos. Love your channel. Just subscribed. See you in Middle Earth!
It’s not jumping ship so much as taking an opportunity.
Thanks for the sub and thanks for the comments!
Blud, do you think they will ever do a level squish? As a returning player, and I imagine for new players, having to level to 150 is a bit daunting... And with new expansions on the horizon, I only see this problem getting worse.
It sounds like a level squish is outside the realm of what their small team can feasibly do. However, it sounds like the next expansion will not involve an increase of levels.
I guess I'm not sure what timed-release quests are?
And didn't they just update the avatars (at least, all but the Beornings) a couple years ago? I was disappointed in the recent Human avatar update. My characters looked fine before, but now they look weird. Especially the hair. They look like they combed with a chainsaw and a leaf blower.
Think Bingo Boffin and the Lay of Rust & Rime for time-released quests (new quest every week over several months, with rewards), though this may be on a somewhat bigger scale. Re: avatar revamps, the one for Race of Man allowed much more control over different aspects of the player character's appearance via sliders, and also mostly improved hair looks (while adding new ones). The old ones were very pixelated.
@@DeanFWilson Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about Bingo and Rust & Rime.
I have no issue with the expanded options for avatars. I've played with the new stuff on a couple new characters and they look pretty cool.
I just don't love what the update has done to my existing characters. Especially the new skin texture compared to the old, and the way hair styles that used to look smooth and sleek now look disheveled. They also clip badly with the new Umbar light and medium armour headbands.
I thought the roadmap was vague, but someone has finally learned that too much detail just gets people upset, especially if it doesn't come to pass. There's always time for complaining later. For as many long time players as there are, it's going to take something drastic to push them away.
Yeah we just need a general idea of what’s coming.
hope they bring back a legendary/classic server to explore the game through the beginning with other players and dont feel like its a solo game :(
There are plans for additional legendary servers but not real details have been made public at this time.
Hopefully same thing. I love lotro but way to much shit now lol start a fresh server so I can play with people make friends and I’ll 10000% sub
My wife and I both have VIP lifetime accounts. I absolutely will always keep coming back to LOTRO, but the fact is the graphics has reached its end date for me. I never thought I would be playing this game 18 years later when I purchased the VIP option during beta, but man it just makes me sad every time I give this game a try again and the spark just isnt there. #maybeitsme.
Happens. Times and people change. It’s all good.
After cousairs of umbar I felt burnt and as for the next expansion it should have delayed to 2025 because the road map rubbed me the wrong way because after the launch of umbar with the delay of instances i just uninstall lotro on the 15th of January
New expansion? Uh, i'm not really sure about that. I'd love an expansion that adds more content for 50-80+ areas as an alternative. I love Lotro but Umbar so far has been bit underwhelming.
We do not need anymore mid level content. Sorry, but I hard disagree with this.
They never followed through with many of the craft updates they promised from the last expansion. It's been disappointing.
None of this is ever promised. That’s where a lot of disappointment comes from in having the wrong expectations. More crafting events are coming, the fourth profession is in testing now and the vocations are gone.
@@Bludborn I think what I was hoping for the most is to see multiple mining, wood, scholar nodes showing together. I have heard boo about where that is at or if it's really possible
MAKE A TLE SERVER PLEASE!!!!!
TLE?
@@Bludborn like a time locked server. So you can enjoy each phase from classic on and have people to play with and such. Right now there’s just too much shit I try to play but can’t get through 140 lvls lol
They have done that. A few time already with their legendary servers. All but one have caught up though.
This game desperately needs a new graphics engine. I wanna play it soo bad but the graphics are way too ancient for me to bare...
Kinda is what it is. They are just not going to get that kind of an investment. The people way above them, who looked into it, pulled the project because it was not going to be cost effective for them
Regarding the content it's awesome but the graphics need a general overhaul rly bad.....please...UE5 ;) .
You might as well get the graphics idea out of your head. It’s not going to happen.
