@@gcn There's a great event called the Vermont Overland Race. It could make a good segment for Jeremy. It gets some pros every year. Far more gravel than pavement in Vermont. And billboards are outlawed!
Conor, While you are in Vermont, I'd suggest trying some of the rest of New England. New Hampshire Maine, and Massachusettsallow riding from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mountains, and have just about any kind of road you can dream up. Thankfully, we do not really have a lockdown here in New Hampshire, and I will be riding in the next couple days.
The SW corner of Wisconsin specifically the driftless region including the Mississippi river valley is unbelievable. Hundreds of miles of paved county and township roads with very light vehicle traffic. Combined with picturesque small towns with lots of cheese and beer make it a bikers paradise. Be ready for lots of climbing!
Those scenes from the comeragh mountains bring back so many great memories of riding the Sean Kelly classic each year, rain 🌧 fog 🌫 and more rain ☔️ classic really miss it hopefully SK will get it back on the calendar 📅
North of Thailand and maybe over the border into Myanmar. There is some of the best country with the greatest views, the friendliest people and quiet roads. I missed it this year but will be there at some time in the future.
Living here for work, I cycle in the Caucasus mountains (Georgia) nearly every day: terrible roads, aggressive stray dogs and most of all, reckless, inconsiderate drivers. Not pretty. Going on an adventure is fine, done bikepacking many times myself, but when the adventure means constant danger for your everyday ride, you quickly forget about the scenery. I'd die for some boring, safe ride elsewhere! :D
Where am I dreaming of cycling? The route I'd planned for about a year now: Bikepacking from Brussels to Skaftö on Sweden's West coast. The route goes up to the scheldt estuary, across to the Netherlands then all along the coast to the German North Sea coast and then across Germany via Hamburg to Lubeck followed by the ferry to southern Sweden and along the coast to Gothenburg and on to Bohuslän... Easier return trip with a longer ferry from Gothenburg to Kiel and a direct route South West from Hamburg to Münster and then to Niejmegen and home to Brussels. Ferries booked for August - lets hope international bike travel is back on by then.... Otherwise it has to be next year.
I live in Toronto, Canada and it will be Central Florida for the winter and Austria/Germany next September. I have done 7 of the 10 listed. Provence is my favourite and toured 4 times.
Right now for me the toll road & some of the gravel(not the harder mtb) trails in Mount Wilson, California. Just an epic climb, around 9.5 miles(15.3km) long & about 5000ft of descending. The top has a beautiful overview of Los Angeles.
Call me boring, but I really enjoyed the Peak District, so I'd go for more of that, plus the Lake District & Yorkshire Dales. Then Kitzbühel & the rest of the Tirol because I go skiing there. After that, Col de Turini, Pikes Peak, Scotland, the Belgian classic climbs and then maybe Alpe d'Huez & the stelvio to round it out
Sounds like Nicaragua is a gravel bikepacking 'Epic Rides' video in the making. Already looking forward to watching that. Likewise a video riding with Boswell in Vermont. Both excellent video potential.
Connor...Great to hear you love riding here in Melbourne. You’ll should make a trip here and organise some rides ...next year Tour Down Under ...fingers crossed!!! I’m waiting to just ride some gravel right here in Gippsland Victoria and all the beautiful riding destinations in Aus.
I ride I did last summer which was very nice was around he Niagara peninsula in Ontario. The Niagara River Parkway goes from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario along the Niagara River past the falls. Follow Lake Ontario shore to the Welland Canal then go back to Lake Erie.
I'm lucky. I've got an almost pan-flat, traffic-free, paved pathway on my doorstep that takes me 25 km to downtown. And also from home, I can ride on quiet suburban roads, mostly with bike lanes, out into the local highlands on a hillier route. One day, I'll get really adventurous and ride over to the other side of the river, to Gatineau Park in Quebec, for some real hills. And none of that needs driving the car to get there, let alone flying. Okay, I admit it, not as spectacular as your rides, Conor.
I'd really love to see bikepacking and riding content from closer to home (of GCN) - the one on The NC500 was super! But Ireland is very interesting as a destination and if it really is as good for cycling as Conor purports, all the more reason to show it off.
Connor, I was surprised that you can only travel 2K from you home. Here in Illinois, we can ride solo as far as we want as long as we stay 6 feet from other riders and walkers. I am planning on traveling to Wisconsin during this summer to ride several routes described in Falcon Guide's Road Biking Wisconsin.
Great list - definitely worth visiting some of those as soon as we can. Just one little detail. The Basque country is mega for riding although Angliru and some of the pics showed in the video are not in there but in Asturias!
