It's 100% understandable Aang would be upset that everyone thinks he's dead. He feels he failed the world when we ran away 100 years ago and now he has a chance to right the balance and everyone thinks he's dead. He doesn't want people to believe he failed, he doesn't want people to lose hope be that's what he represents
Aang did die. The ghastly wound we saw was AFTER Katara healed his cooked body with special spirit water, and AFTER repeated healing sessions. The cycle wasn't broken because Aang was dead only a couple of minutes. Clinical death: No heartbeat or breathing. But, reversible as the brain has a few minutes of reserved oxygen and nutrients. Biological death: Brain death. Ain't no coming back. I think Aang ran away with the intention on getting himself killed. He was headed toward to fire nation with no conceivable hope of winning any battle. He knows if he dies he will be reborn. And, he knows the next Avatar will be born in the Water Tribe. Plenty of protection with that group. So, in 18-20 years a new fully trained Avatar would take his place. I'm sure they'd be able to find a fire bender to teach that new Avatar the last part.
I notice this with a lot of reactors. Aang literally died and because of that the Earth Kingdom fell and reactors are like "why is he upset? Big baby." Like bro...
