What a beautiful transparent video, Ginger…. Wishing you all the best in the future and expecting great things for you going forward. Bittersweet reaching such a crossroads in life, but turning the page to a new chapter with different things having the space now to grow including your relationship is simply a wonderful thing. Go overseas bro. Come visit me, I moved to D.R. n got married 🌴 (that invitation's open to any melee bro who wants to go to the beach / Caribbean Island btw too, I host a lot), I don't get enough maylay down here, but got a big condo with extra rooms, and they love westerners / western culture here 💖😅 I'm a dope wingman 😅, know all the spots. Really wanna see you get a relationship too m2k. Ask James how his trip went 🥰💫👩 👩 I made those melee mods for u too a while back remember

I've been out of the community for probably the last 5-6 years, but this video just popped up in my feed and hit me in the feels. Avery, I've always thought you were a really smart, empathetic, hard working dude and a really great melee player. I, and many others, are undoubtedly going to miss seeing you in those tournaments... but I'm happy for you and totally stand by your choice, whatever you ultimately decide to do. it seems like you're following your heart and that's what really matters. Much love

  • @benjaminmitchell4218
    @benjaminmitchell4218 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +85

Hey, Avery. Six years ago I did the same thing. I was no where near as good as you, but I was engaged to the love of my life and I needed to start spending my time on something that could provide a stable amount of income to support my new family instead of competing in melee. I took that same work ethic to school and then to jobs after. I started a great career and now, after six years, I make great money and have a lot of extra time on my hands due to my flexible career. Because of this, I decided to start pursuing melee again.
I know it's hard, but I think you're making the right call. There are many incredibly difficult and incredibly rewarding things to pursue in life, but not all of those things provide for a family. A family will make you happier in the end. Try not to think of it as giving up on your dreams, just think of it as reprioritizing for the time being. Nothing is stopping you from coming back at a later date and trying again.

Was just about to show this to Elliot - he had already shared it with me before I got out of work. We were just talking about you. Crazy how fast time flies. I still remember the days at Dalton Center, and driving you to the smashfests at Blake's house. And the Kzoo vs Holland rivalry. It's been almost a decade since then - isn't that insane?
Hope you're doing well man, and that you're finding solace in your new journey, even if just one step at a time. It was very weird being out of the scene at first, but life has a way of presenting new opportunities to those who approach with the right seeking spirit, work hard, and are resourceful. Not even remotely worried about any of those three with you man. Simply the closing of one chapter, and the start of a new and better one.
I know you're going to be quite involved in the scene still in your own way. It's absolutely crazy how far you've taken your growth. It's been a treat to watch and study top level melee through such familiar eyes, and we're proud of your accomplishments. Wishing the best for you, and that you quickly find what you are seeking.
Love this picture. Much deeper smash history than most realize. The real ones know Cody, the man on the right. ;)
    Up and onward!

I am a casual Melee enjoyer and this video reminded me of the sadness and frustration I felt when I dropped a game I spent thousands of hours on. I tried so hard to break skill barriers and I slowly got better, but the amount of time spent invested was just not worth it. When you come to that realization and accept that you'll never be the best it sucks so much. Especially when it's something you love so much. I don't regret finding other hobbies, since it brought more balance to my life, but I do REALLY miss the competitiveness of it all... At the end of the day, at least you can say you gave it your best shot. I am very grateful for those memories and off to find new ventures. Good luck to your future as well.

3:30 hit me as someone in a similar spot, albeit a different space from melee. I've only loosely followed melee over the years, but you became one of my favorite people to watch for tutorials as I was getting into netplay, and just general self-improvement/mindset things (I compete in golf oddly enough and there are TONS of parellels). And I'm glad you're staying in content creation! You've got a really good on screen presence, communicate clearly, and there are plenty of people who watch you for you, and not just melee. Wishing you the best!

I'm not a huge melee fanatic but you were always my favorite player ever since I watched your analysis vids on youtube. I found them super insightful and gave me a lot of good ideas for how to analyse my/other's games in League. I don't know how much demand there is for those type of videos but it would be sick if you could keep doing high-level analytical content.

Love ya, man. You're a massive inspiration to Falcos everywhere, and you've contributed so much to the scene that I think you're a pillar. You're always in conversations about the game, and you've come such a long way using a character that, frankly, isn't very good at all. While none of us will ever understand all the sacrifices you've made, just know that you've substantially contributed to something that is much bigger than all of us, and for that, you have my respect. Hate to see you go, but I love that you're happy with your decision. See you around!

You made me cry... I hope everything goes well for you, it's a pity that players as good as you cannot make a good living out of melee

Dang, well you'll be missed. Always got hype when I saw you on stream in bracket. Hope new stuff works out better for you. Also, I really admire how vulnerable you were with your emotions in this video. That shows a lot of strength. Best of luck to you Ginger!!

Ah Ginge :( The melee road is damn hard if you're a high level competitor, I don't know how anyone does it. You've been my favourite player for a long time and always felt like you were on the precipice of a breakthrough to be the best in the world, I've learned more from asking you questions and your educational videos than in the last 5 years alone, even just dealing with simple Sheik back throw at the ledge unlocked infinite things for me in general about the game. You've been a huge help and it breaks my heart to see you go, BUT, I am looking forward to educational content and coaching again.
We love ya mate and appreciate everything you've done for us and watching you compete.

many years ago i looked at the facts and thought, damn, i love this game, but making it a primary focus of my life would most likely lead to disappointment and frustration. a lot of great players try their best and like you said only 1 can walk away the winner in every tournament, leaving potentially thousands of talented people feeling like they failed. that's just how the system is set up. even look at the #1 players, pretty much every single one of them eventually lost #1 and spent years trying to regain it. it's never enough, it's a bottomless hole, nobody ever truly wins. there's so much more to life. there's so many other hobbies and pursuits and destinies that aren't by nature set up to have only 1 winner and thousands of so-called losers. you're doing the smart thing and you have so so so much time ahead, don't look back.

You were a joy to watch whenever you were on screen and became one of the most loved personalities in the melee scene. You pushed the Falco meta and optimized it in unique ways. I remember watching you during the online era when you faced off against hbox. It was so hype watching you play that set. It was such a different way to play the match up. Like you jumped around when hbox missed rest as a di mixup or that moment when hbox was spiked and had to use up all his jumps in order to make it back, while you did a fully charged down smash. I remember it like it was yesterday. Whether you became the best or not, it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of who you are and what you've become. You most certainly left your imprint on the scene and became someone amazing through this beautiful game we call melee.

One of my favorite memories of you was actually listening to you on Radio Melee. That might have been one of my favorite episodes because you were clearly so passionate and engaged through every topic. I'll miss rooting for you taking Falco to new heights, but I'm excited to see where you'll go from here, and what content you'll share with us soon o7

Smash Ultimate Player here. Saw this in my recommended and watched until the end. This is really inspiring, and watching the retirement announcement also cemented the feeling of closure that I’ll have when I leave the scene later in life(I’m a youngster, so it will be years from now lol) as well as the fact that I would be making the right call. To be able to let go of something you love for the greater good is really telling of the kind of person you are, despite the fact that this is the first time I have ever heard of you. Thank you, and I hope your journey leads you to a path of prosperity. God bless you, Ginger!
