I was mackie's drum tech through the 1990s when he worked with Bad brains. Incredible speed, control and technique. A huge talent and a true gentleman.
HUGE mackie fan here as a drummer myself n n.y.h.c. fanatic here too but how can i reach out to him via email/gmail possibly ? , i only have this here , i am super oldschool , thanks n talk soon > tom !
If you listen to "age of quarell" and compare it with other HC records from that era, I think it's really his drumming that makes the difference and gives the album the classic status it has. There's lots of other great Punk/HC drummers with great energy but Mackie (+ Earl from Bad Brains) brought groove & tightness into Hardcore.
Agreed. And I believe the songs played without mackie, even with a really good drummer, aren't quite as good either--really reveals what a difference a drummer can make.
@@emd71 The drummer makes ALL the difference! It's still what a lot of people under-estimate or don't get at all. Also in Mackies case, there's so many subtle details that make the whole difference and that can't be just re-produced, no matter how "good" the drummer is.
i am a oldschool 80's punk/h/c/ drummer n this drummer makes my hair stand up straight n goosebumps too , lol, lol yea he's GREAT , ask steve gadd , thanks > tom !
no joke, its probably one of the reasons he's still playing at this level. Everyone else trying to sit as low as possible ends up with a jacked up back by their late 30s.
I bought "Age of Quarrel" on cassette a couple of months after it's release. I was 17 or 18. My first full on New York Hard as f#@k Hardcore. In fact, I heard Cro Mags literally before Youth of Today or Murphy's Law. I was immediately blown away by the production and just how doomy and genuinely heavy the heavy parts were, and yes, the Mackie attackie was the essential element. I am an old man now, and this is the first time I have ever seen a visual demonstration of him actually playing this material in real life. I always imagined that he had a big ass, expensive Yamaha or Mapex with double bass. 😲 Wow! He is keeping it simple in terms of equipment and those double bass patterns? Turns out he plays that shit on the floor toms! At 2:32 he demonstrates the technique. My decades of misconceptions ironed out in 15 minutes, thank you posting this!🤘👍
Pretty sure he used a twin bass drum setup around 86 theres footage of it at Lamour (86) and you can clearly hear it in the second bar of the chorus of be myself and the bridge though great drumming to imitate the sound of double bass if his not using a double kick pedal

100% man. The new Harley-fronted lineup suffers for lack of Mackie. Misses that vicious groove.
Truth, verità, verdad.
Idk.....you hear will shepler on that live af tape? He’s easily as good a drummer...don’t know about now but back then
best hardcore drummer
One of a Kind 🔥

As in can clearly hear it in be myself on the LP version
@@CLee-oy1li Really?! Man, this is cool! So, in fact he did originally do double bass and that is in fact what I hear on Age of...?
Yep! all in all a great drummer though especially for the fact he can pull it off with that weird set up haha
Hands down
Mackie is the hardest drummer in HC.
I’ve been on the Mackie tip for 36 years
