  • One of the most frequent questions I receive is whether or not old concrete statues can be repainted. Yes they can and it's very simple. This video shares just a few of the tips you should know before starting.

Thank you! this week I found an old bird bath and its broken pedestal deep in the woods on my property. It's the pedestal I want to paint; your info is wonderful. The bath part has deteriorated and so heavy it's crumbling when touched, so I pulled it out of the woods to leave sitting under an aging cedar as a planter, then filled it with ground cover and will set St. Francis statue to watch over it. I like your turtle!

A few years back, I scored an old concrete 'dragon on a castle' that might have been a fountain or just a planter. It has old 'whoknowswhat' (sealant?) on it that is mostly worn off. I'm wanting to clean it, seal the concrete, and paint/seal it to suit the subject and use it as a fountain/planter anew. :) Thanks for the info!

I know this video is old but I am hoping that you still check them. I have a cement Virgin Mary that I need to re-do for a friend. I was planning on using Acrilic Patio/outside paint. In this video, you say acrilic latex exterior paint...is that house paint?

I never measure exactly but I would say about 50/50 it’s very runny.

What if I’m not sure about the material the statue is made of? :(

It's hard to answer with out knowing what its made of either, but I'd recommend trying a small test patch somewhere on the staue to see how the paint reacts to it.

Can I put a base coat on if the statue has already been painted (there was no base coat originally)

Yes you can, it won’t hurt the statue at all and will make a nice clean canvas.

I have a 20 year old Chocolate Lab statue. Its in great condition but, obviously it needs a fresh coat of paint. Parts of it are very light colored. Should I just go ahead and give it a fresh coat of base, just in case? Does it matter if I do it even if it dosent really need it. I do think it needs it tho. Thanks

The main thing is to clean the statue of any loose old paint, I use a sponge sanding block for this. Then spray off with a hose to get it clean. Then I would do a fresh base coat all over.

My brain is freezing on this...... do I do both a wet base then go over it with straight paint, or just the wet base. Thanks, and thank you for being patient.

Usually once a statue has been painted, its very hard to remove the old paint. However, you can clean it up and repaint it,
