The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt as his wife, biologist and botanist Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer. Oscar® winner Matt Damon portrays General Leslie Groves Jr., director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey, Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

The cast includes Dane DeHaan (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets), Dylan Arnold (Halloween franchise), David Krumholtz (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Matthew Modine (The Dark Knight Rises).
The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan.
Oppenheimer is filmed in a combination of IMAX® 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography including, for the first time ever, sections in IMAX® black and white analogue photography.
Nolan’s films, including Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, Inception and The Dark Knight trilogy, have earned more than $5 billion at the global box office and have been awarded 11 Oscars and 36 nominations, including two Best Picture nominations.

With the strikes going on, this may be the last big budget movie in a while. I’m glad that the industry is (temporarily) going out with a bang, because Oppenheimer is genuinely looking like a once in a lifetime film. The music and cinematography are so eerie and perfect.

this movie honestly isn't even that "big budget". had 1/3 the budget of Indiana Jones and Mission impossible which is honestly astounding considering this cast and how Nolan does practical effects rather than CGI a lot of the time. He is our best modern day director
Gotta see this one in the theater, as with all Nolan films. Let the courageous sound mixing break your ears with the fx and also make it impossible to hear more than 22% of the dialogue!
The last 20 seconds or so of this movie might be the best Nolan has ever done. Absolutely fantastic ending.

Anyone else hearing the nuclear sirens woven into the music already? That's absolute genius from the composer. Christopher Nolan movie soundtracks are always next-level.
The internet has been wiped clean in the attempt to re-write history. genius? isn't it quite an obvious thing to include when composing a filmscore for a film centred on the creation of the atomic bomb lol. i do like the big moment in that score but like all Nolan films, it's not subtle. why is Nolan so unbelievably verbose and incompetent when it comes to sound design/scoring?

This film is about to inspire a whole generation of physicists, scientists, engineers, actors, filmmakers, musicians, and more... this is a historic film. It's going down as one of if not thee greatest films ever made. I honestly can't stop thinking about it.
Me too...the CLIMAX of the movie, the music, the AMPLIFIED READING OF THE LETTER, the scene switching, it's BORDERLINE too complex to follow, like it rides that line where you can juuuust keep up with it, and then it explodes! What a masterpiece.

Nuclear physics would be a good degree
This looks absolutely haunting. That's a feeling I often get from a lot of Christopher Nolan's films. There's this ominousness to certain scenes in many of his films -- namely Inception and Interstellar -- coupled with a really haunting score that resonates with this very eerie and dreamlike and almost ghostly feel. I get the sense that Oppenheimer will have a lot of that, which excites me.
Exactly, there is this eerie tone that makes audience tensed (in a good way). I believe it is the way to get audience on board on what they are about the embark for the next 3 hours

I think much of that is the practical effects and lack of CGI. It's much more immersive. Also Nolans camera angles he really likes the close ups showing emotions.
This is a PERFECT trailer. Its the first one that has shown the entire cast, which is INSANE and the first trailer to give us the tone of the movie.
There was a tv show a few years back called Manhattan (Project) that basically covered this same exact movie. Almost verbatim. The show was only like one or two seasons. It came out in 2014

Saw this film at the opening screening last night. It truly is an absolute masterpiece. Cillian and Robert's performances are exceptional. Nolan's pacing, writing, score, and creativity have created the perfect film.

Nolan's score? He didn't compose the music himself. The score was composed by Ludwig Goransson, the guy who produced "This is America" with Childish Gambino.

Watched it late last night. So glad I got to see it before too many reviews came out everywhere. This movie is excellent. One of the most extraordinary and terrifying films I've ever seen. Give Cillian Murphy the oscar. He inhabits that role. Every department was firing on all cylinders. Even the smaller roles with insanely big name cast all killed it. Just remarkable. Will absolutely rank among Nolan's best. This one will get a lot of awards nominations and wins.

You forget sometimes how important the score is for a movie. Whoever put this music together...well done. It really builds the tension and makes me want to see this movie even more. I was planning on seeing it next Sunday but I have no patience so bought a ticket to see it on Thursday. Cannot wait.

The cinematography, the acting, the music, the writing, the directing, every aspect of this brilliant film is beyond incredible, if this doesn't win multiple Oscars, I don't know what film will. Nolan has created another spectacular masterpiece.
I saw this film yesterday. it is an excellent film that closely follows the American Prometheus book on which it is based, and probably one of the best films I have ever seen. Christopher Nolan has delivered another masterpiece. The story of Oppenheimer's 'communist' background and the (ultimately) false charges against him takes centre stage, along with his fears of letting the nuclear genie out of the box. Although three hours long, it moves at pace and never feels dull. Both Cillian and Robert are superb and, in my humble opinion, give performances of their lives. Both deserve not only an Oscar nomination but must be favourites to win best actor, and supporting actor. If you have an interest in this period of history, or the science that it created, go and see it. You wont be disappointed.

It looks interesting and Murphy seems perfect for the lead role, but I'll have to ask: is EVERYBODY half-whispering under their breath in this film? The dialogue audio here sounds really muddy, and unfortunately this is a familiar disease in films and some tv series these days: they want to sound informal and include a landscape of music, ambience and sound effects, but the dialogue ends up being too low and buried too deep in the mix. :(

I am so happy to see Josh Hartnett in a BIG movie again. Dude is an incredible actor who never gets the recognition he deserves. Also, surprisingly, Josh Peck's performance looks really good. Proof that a masterful writer and director can make even the most "unusual" castings look like gold! So excited to see this movie!
I think hartnett is quite exigent with the project he wants to be involved in…he’s not a big budget film kind of guy. But I do agree that would be nice see him more often
I'm also happy to see Downey Jr. in a non-Marvel role. He might get Best Supporting Actor.

This film is absolutely the film of the year, easily. The way the music rarely ever let up throughout the entire ~3 h 9m runtime, the way sound design and cinematography had my full attention the entire time, I simply couldn't look away. It is an awe-inspiring film... and a grave warning. Masterpiece.
This MUST be watched on the biggest screen with the best sound system you can find! I saw it yesterday with my wife. She said that we must buy this when available (Yes, she actually said that!) I said it just would not be near the same as what we just experienced! The sound is tremendous! When the bomb explodes everything in the theater vibrated! It was very, very loud which helped drive home the power of the moment.

And it is about the murders of native Americans, so it already scores more points in the woke department, which is what the Oscars are for a large part about now. Did you really think they've learned anything from what Ricky Gervais said to them? Of course not.
I just saw the movie on the day of its release, the first time I did that. It was an absolute pleasure to watch. It may not be packed with a lot of CGI action filled scenes, but it keeps you glued to the screen in a different way. It is an outstaning experience bringing to light one of the most important, yet lesser known people ever. Combined with Nolan's unmatched filmcraft, it is one of the best movie experiences I ever had.
Thank goodness it's not. If there was ever a case for using CGI this movie would be it but I"m glad they went old school.

Watched it yesterday and 3 hours seemed too short. It was an amazing experience. Almost felt as if it was happening in real time. Cillian Murphy was just sublime in his performance. RDJ really surprised me.

Nolan movies are like research projects for audience.. the first time you see it, you might not get it completely, but would leave you with some curiosity. Later you try figuring out the reasons and science behind it, you again raise more queries and after looking here and there, you come up with the answers. You later stitch all things up and look at the whole picture with utter clarity. Then you realize what a masterpiece it is.

Nolan has a knack for dread. From the sound editing to the cinematography, there is a palpable sense of dread akin to a horror movie, only this was real. Exquisitely done, primo Oscar bait.

I wasn't able to see this on IMAX film, but seeing it on regular 70mm was an experience. I later saw it on IMAX Laser which was great. The sound especially. But in certain scenes in particular, film blew it out of the water. Film simply cannot be beat and I think because of Nolan's films, people are becoming interested again. I saw the movie 5 times in theater. Twice on film. The auditorium was full both times.

This is a brilliant movie capturing history at its best. It is haunting and I pray that a nuclear strike never happens again in our lifetime. Captivating as it defined the characters and decisions they had to make in that moment knowing the repercussions it will unleash. A must-see movie with one of the best music and cinematography I have ever seen.

The level of detail in this film is just incredible. For me personally, as a lover of history, this might turn out to be the best film ever made.
It's not really history though. It pushes the propaganda that Japan surrendered because they were nuked. It's now pretty clear that Japan surrendered because the Soviet Union declared war on them and could've invaded in 10 days. It would've taken us almost a year to invade Japan and that's if we could've stomached the horrific casualties on our side.

This film is absolutely incredible in IMAX. I was able to see this film on 70mm IMAX in a sold out cinema and it was just amazing seeing it on that amazing screen. Brilliant acting, great writing and fantastic ending, the ending is like wow! Such a chilling film but so very great. If you ever get the chance to see this film in IMAX, take that choice! IMAX 70mm might be harder because it’s only being shown in 30 locations worldwide so a regular IMAX is the second best thing.
