As a Spanish/Portuguese person for whom this food is literally run of the mill/a weekly late night meal/absolutely normal, this video really entertained me. Poor Irish lads and lasses 🤣 PS: their faces when the "mejillones en escabeche" and the zamburiñas came out...lol
I'm Portuguese and cannot stand seafood. My family thinks it's hysterical because the smell makes me gag.😄

I live in tghe US Midwest and I love these foods. A tin of seafood, some crackers or good bread and some veggies is a great meal for work. I always eat elsewhere if my coworkers object, though. One time this real basic woman actually made a formal complaint because I had some kippers!

I've always loved how honest Dermot is. If something is bad, he will say it genuinely, but if something surprises him at being good, he is genuine in his reaction. That's basically why he's always been my favorite to watch here.

I was all set for this to go to Dermot for his weird glare at the camera but then Halprin took over by retching just staring at the squid. Then there was the look on Callyanne's face when Colin put the plate with the octopus in front of her
Finally Aidan broke the tape at the finish line. He was flopping around like something canned for the shoot. If that wasn't enough, Damon started working on him.
I was dying laughing watching that part. lol I thought for sure Aidan was going to go for the trash can, so I gotta give him points for not spitting it out.

@@csnide6702 It isn't the Irish per se I think. It's these young relatively wealthy Dubliners that grew up on pizza, burgers and other trendy foods. My city friends are the same, never had sardines, spam nor pickled eggs.

Not many TRY videos have triggered such physical reactions in me as this one (Donal and the surströmming wins), but more from everyone else's reaction than the products. Dermot getting the scallop shred to stick to his cheek (twice!) is impressive.
I must say that Damon killed it this episode; from his refined cosmopolitan taste to the 'yes, do rub it in!' to the EPIC beard. Must have leveled up recently...

Aiden figured out the hot sauce condiment very quick. I am impressed. Many country stores keep an open bottle of hot sauce handy and sell sardines and small packs of saltine crackers because we like them for snacks.

as a Spaniard, I can tell ya that if you ever come to Spain, y'all be amazed by the food we have here! Not only fish, but meat veggies and everythin'! you should TRY to visit Spain someday! :D

Aiden spazzing out had me rolling, I think this is the first time I actually watched it twice in a row, all the tryers did a great job.
Only surprised the producers did not use that shot of Callyann's face of revulsion/fear/disgust at the sardine as the headshot for the teaser of this video. Previously, I thought it was Callyann's positive energy that forced the sun to the share its rays with our pitiful planet. But the sun was still shining as she sat with horror, looking at what she was about to taste.
Poor Aiden was absolutely tortured by Damon. I did get quite a laugh when Dermont first poked the squid with his fork and I got a mental image of a stream of ink shooting out on poor Callyanne.

My GF in uni grew up in Spain. She introduced me to Spanish conserva. Tinned fish is usually the lowest quality stuff. Conserva is made with the utmost care. It is a gourmet product. In Canada, Basque goose barnacles are almost 40 Euro a small can.

Canned octopus freaks me out, but here in Puerto Rico, octopus salad is very popular and one of my favorite dishes. Also, Callyann’s “stop playing with your food Dermot!” cracked me up 😂

Same! Smoked oysters are amazing. For some reason they’re only available periodically in NYC lately (since corona.)
Always ate my smoked oysters with crackers until the other day dumped whole tin in a pot of broth for my ramen. Worked surprisingly well with the garlic & ginger.

over here in the states you can get sardines canned in mustard, in hot sauce etc. I like those over plain sardines in oil
The mustard ones were just a solid allaround lunch growing up, tbh.
My favorite is the Louisiana Hot Sauce on a cracker with a small slice of cheddar cheese. A couple cans of those and a six pack and I'm set for a good evening. LOL
If you have an Aldi near you, occasionally they have mussels in garlic sauce. Delicious!!! Frozen food section.
Sardines in tomato sauce are so good even finicky me at age eight would eat them.
Interesting. I much prefer them plain. Garlic or the squid in ink are the only flavors I like. Smoked of course is always good.

I'm so glad they tried this. Canned fish from Spain is amazing! I think people forget this since it seems like an "old people" food. New gens and mid need to give it a shot for sure. I was one of those kids that had a dad that loved these sort of things, and as a kid I learned it's quite the snack.

I am really surprised you'll have never eaten sardines. Personally, I love sea critters and have worked as a commercial fisherman on the Pacific coast of Canada. One summer working on a prawn boat up the Bute Inlet, we kept pulling up empty traps (the prawn traps are about a meter in diameter and about 750cm deep) in this one bay. We caught the "thief" though when we pulled up one trap and it was FULL of an octopus! Bugger was so big it literally FILLED the trap! Best tasting rubber I've ever had!

Hilarious reactions from everyone! So funny. To be honest, I adore tinned smoked oysters, so to me, the mussels and sardines were perfectly lovely. However, kudos to those brave souls who managed the squid and octopus, as there is no chance I could have put that black goo or tentacled bits into my mouth. Would love to see the out-takes on this video!

On Dermot's comment on eating the fish out of the tin: There was a comedian I saw who asked the audience if anyone chewed tobacco. A fellow raised his hand and the comedian pointed to a round object about the size of a chewing tobacco can in his back pocket and asked if he wanted some. The answer was yes, so the comedian pulled out a can of tuna. The audience member balked at that and the comedian said that he would put that disgusting tobacco stuff in his mouth but not tuna?

Skinless and boneless sardines in olive oil are one of my favorites! Smoked mussels or any other seafood are also grand! How grand, the look on every person's face when the octopus showed up. I laughed out loud.

This video was hilarious!!! Every team was so good together. The facial expressions were priceless. Dermot stole the show for me. First when he faked choking on a sardine bone and Callyann's reaction. Second when he said it looks like a bisected testicle and Callyann gave the perfect answer. Third was when he said scallops "are lovely" to which Callyann asks "are they" and Dermot says "oh yeah" in an unconvincing voice, at least to me it was. Great video. Two thumbs up if I could but I only have one thumb. That's all TH-cam will let us use.

Belgium isn't too far away you guys, some of the best mussels you'll ever have! The'yre usually made in a soupy stew with fresh vegetables and then the side of fries and vinegar is divine.
Like many/most foods the taste/texture of freshly prepared is worlds apart from preserved & tinned. I love fresh octopus (cold pulpo salad), squid (fried calamari) and scallops (in garlic sauce) but won’t go near most canned seafood.

Thus reminds me of when I took my Estonian co worker to the Pub for the first time. He said "I bring Estonian pub snack" opened his jacket, pulled out an un wrapped dried herring, whacked it twice on the bar and picked at it with his fingers. Omg the look on everyone else face!
