Jeff Kaye had one heck of a staff at KB Radio. That kiddies was back when Radio WAS FUN!!! WKBW for those who do not know, was a big AM Music (Top-40) radio station back in the "Good old days"...Way to go guys/gals...perfection.

Our local top 40 station was WLS Chicago. I think I heard every Beatles new single from 1964-68 on LS. I don't think FM made it's appearance in Champaign, IL until '67 or '68, but that was soon the end of top 40 AM radio. WLS is talk radio now; I assume the same for WKWB.

I remember as a very young teen in NW Arkansas in the late '70s / early '80s picking up WLS AM radio from Chicago at night time on my bedside clock radio. It was actually one of the only clear AM stations we could tune in at night... 660 miles away!!

Thankfully, radio shows are slowing regaining strength in the US with the popularity of creepypastas (scary stories shared online).

dlsofsetx There was a tv-movie made years ago in the 70’s based on the Orson Welles broadcast called “The Night That Panicked America” Its a great movie

There was a tv movie in the '70s or '80s which was about terrorists with an atomic weapon holding Charleston SC (IIRC) hostage that was done in a "news flash" format. I don't remember the name of the movie but it was pretty good... AND the disaster happened!

This broadcast was amazing. I live in Australia and found the broadcast posted here on TH-cam last year and downloaded it. The guys at WKBW Radio station put on one hell of a show. How thousands actually believed it was real, from the large number of media disclaimers before the show, and even during the show, is absolutely crazy. Still, it's a show I'm going to keep on my MP3 player, and listen to it again and again. Good stuff! War of the Worlds rocks!!

To this day it's the only accurate way that the human race could possibly win in a war with an intellectually and technologically advanced species: by default.
Nature ended up being the true victor.

The 71 reproduction was better than both the 68 and 38. Thanks!
something tells me that, in the midst of the broadcast, your saying "Here's Orson Welles doing a guest appearance in this reproduction" would still have gone over people's heads

Thanks for sharing this, Bob Koshinski07. Have you seen Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds" musical? That was about martians from Mars driving 3 legged space pods and ripping England part and using their heat ray to vaporize human kind. The journalist survived. But the Martians wanted Earth to grow their red weed ( red weed?? ) cause Earth has plenty of resources.

I know I'm 3 years late to the party but I wanted to say that (a) that is a SUPERB musical - I had it on LP, have it on CD and also have the stage version, and (b) for anyone else who may see this, it really IS OK to use the word "mankind." It comes from the 13th century, etymologically, and both then and now stands for "all humans collectively/the human race." There's nothing discriminatory in the phrase, no matter what the hyper-feminists/PC police have tried to say.

It did work. To a point. First off, it was and still is, very good. I did not like the fact that they all died. Every single one of them got bumped off. Everyone in Buffalo was getting gassed. That didn't happen in the world of HG Wells. Yes, while some did die, a lot of other people lived. Not all of London died in HG's book. The second thing that drove me nuts was all the yelling in the newsroom. Nothing yells "contrived" than yelling in a newsroom. Yet it was incessant. If those two issues could have been addressed, I think it would have been better than what Orson Wells created 30-years earlier. BTW, I am a former radio newsman.

Would you believe that H.G. Wells was even more ahead of his time than most folks think? When I listened to an audio book of War Of The Worlds, the description of the Martian tripods given had them moving as fluidly and gracefully as any flesh and blood creature.

@@Agent-xn1hr I never liked the song either and I've never had a number one song. It's called "a difference in taste," and "a difference of opinion" which means approximately zip as far as accomplishments on a personal level. If it did, you'd have to answer the same question for anything you liked or disliked. That is such a tired, pointless response in a case of subjective opinion.

@@AnonURnot Unreal response on their part. "You can't say you dislike something and say it's an opinion! YOU'RE WRONG BECAUSE IT'S GREAT AND THAT'S THE TRUTH!"
.....uh....sure - as though anyone who expresses dislike for something that is considered popular is automatically "contrarian" (#10 in our list of "big words to throw into conversation to try and make yourself sound intelligent" - collect them all!) instead of having different likes or dislikes. (FYI - being "contrarian" is a deliberate act; it's a choice by definition of the term. Simply having a different opinion doesn't automatically make you a contrarian by default. It means you're a thinking being with your own opinions)
They immediately disqualified themselves when they ended their statement with "is not a matter of opinion." Well sorry, Chief, yes it is. It may not be TO YOU, but it most certainly is a matter of opinion. Welcome to reality.
