  • Come along with us as we have a family excursion just 10 minutes from our home to Hochfelln, a peak in the Chiemgau Alpern (the Chiemgau Alps). It was the first time on a cable car (Seilbahn) for ALL of our kids! They were excited to go, and you'll see their reaction to cable cars here in the video - did they like it?
    We also got to eat at an Alm at the middle station, where we got to try schnitzel at a restaurant for the first time and had Rinderrouladen and Cordon Blue for the first time in Germany!

    Rinderrouladen might be the number one national dish of Germany. Because most famous german dishes are more regional in reality, but Rinderroulade are eaten from baltic to north sea, from the isles to the black forest, from the Hartz to the Alps, everywhere in Germany 🤷 Its also a very typical sunday Dinner.
    And these are Knödel, not mashed potatos, typical german dumplings. There are Kartoffelknödel (potato dumplings) and what you have wich are Semmelknödel (made of Brötchen).

    • @sollytrotz6056
      @sollytrotz6056 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      But I as someone from northern Germany do not know how you can eat Rouladen with Knödel. We eat them with potatos.
      And I would never order them at a restaurant because the homecooked ones are the best.

      Yes, so, basically, it's a thin slice of beef, then, mustard is spread on it, then ham put on it, and, finally, one pickled gherkin. All this is rolled and secured either by a thread or some toothpicks. The rolls are getting seared at first and, then, they simmer until ready for a few hours.

    Small hint: Be careful when picking flowers in the wild. Especially in the mountains there are quite a few which are under protection (especially the Edelweiß), you are not supposed to pick them. Better to inform yourself which you can pick and which you shouldn't (though my personal rule is to not pick anything in the mountains, to be on the safe side, a lot of the protected flowers are growing in the mountains).

      If you follow the standard tourism paths there is no problem to pick up flowers. The rare orchids ord edelweiß are not easy to find, so there is no danger that u pick them up. The blue flower in your video is a plant of the gentiana genus, which is called "Ezian" in germany. I had been working as a teacher for a year in Marquartstein several years ago, you probably went through this village on your way to bergen. When you travel around in the Alps you'll find even more varieties of Knödel (dumpling). The plain Semmelknödel you had, Speckknödel (with bacon), Leberknödel (with liver), Serviettenknödel (similar to Semmelknödel, but often served in slices) or Kartoffelknödel (potato dumplings). And for the sweet part you can have Germknödel with poppy seeds and melted butter, or less traditional but just as delicious with vanilla sauce.

    If you ever visit the Salzburg region, I can highly recommend to visit the Schafbergspitze (Mount Schafberg) at Lake Wolfgangsee. The SchafbergBahn is the steepest cogwheel railway in Austria and it was was built in 1893 for the Emperor (and nobility) of Austria. The restaurant on top even dates back to 1862! :).
    The views are just amazing! At the summit you are surrounded by mountains and by 13 different lakes of the Salzkammergut region. Being Austrian myself, I have been on many mountains before, but the view at the Schafbersgspitze is by far the most breathtaking of all!

I don't really get the difference of the two ways of pronouncing "Chiemsee", though :) Us Bavarians tend to pronounce the "ee" in the end more like an "ä". Old Bavarian folks like my dad pronounce it "Keamsä", in English probably like "Kerrm-Sea" - that would be the "real" Bavarian pronounciation then :). I hope you enjoy your first winter here. @BerndFunken 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My mother used to make them in a slightly different way (you will learn soon enough that there are probably hundreds of recipes for Rinderrouladen xD): as a preparation you need some minced meat, add a raw egg, put diced onions into that and season this with salt and pepper. Mix that together (its the best to use your hand for that, a machine could produce heat in the minced meat and "cook" it that way and you want to avoid that). Then spread mustard on the beef (hot or medium is your choice), add bacon if you like and then spread the minced meat on top, roll the beef and use cord or "Rouladen Nadeln" to make sure that it will not "unroll" itself. Cook them on medium heat for about one hour.
      Remove the cord or the needles before serving them (cord and needles aren't so tasty xD). The raw egg in the minced meat has the effect that the Rouladen won't "disintegrate" themselves if you cut them (like we could see in your Video ;) ).

    I imagine it beeing hard to differ between these nuances you are not used to yet. The sound of "See" is not existant in english. In Germany, regardless which area, its spoken everywhere the same, actually.

    • @richard--s
      @richard--s 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At the end of the video it was nearly perfect or even perfect.
      But at the beginning it really sounded like the sea.
      Maybe the problem is, that there are two different "e" vocals in German: The rather bright "e" and the deeper "ä", which is similar to the a in "at" or "another". And the lake is spoken with the "e". Look at the German word "gehen" or "sehen". The first "e" of "gehen" or "sehen" is the one for the 'a lake' - "ein See". The two ee in "See" mean a long German e.

    Sidenote: The dish Grayson has is not a "sad Gordon", but a "blue ribbon". I don't want to be rude, but how can you pronounce a word "blue", when it's written "bleu"? ...and with your french experineces...? ;-)
    Wikipedia says about the origin of the name...
    According to Larousse Gastronomique cordon bleu "was originally a wide blue ribbon worn by members of the highest order of knighthood, L'Ordre des chevaliers du Saint-Esprit, instituted by Henri III of France in 1578. By extension, the term has since been applied to food prepared to a very high standard and by outstanding cooks. The analogy no doubt arose from the similarity between the sash worn by the knights and the ribbons (generally blue) of a cook's apron
    I always thought Cordon Bleu was served first on an atlantic crossing...referring to the "blue ribbon" that is given for the fastest passage from europe to the USA.

    Love your videos...from a college German major from 55 years ago who has lived, studied, traveled and worked in Germany for short periods his whole life and now spends summers there full time. Ha, ha, the German Kaugummi, Besteck, and child rearing police were out in full force today! Remember we Americans and our western hemisphere Latino counterparts come from cultures where we're taught not to embarrass others or to correct them unless it's in a teaching type of situation where it's expected. In European Nordic cultures they're encouraged that it's rude NOT to help someone when they make a mistake since they are obviously there to learn a new culture, nicht wahr? This directness cuts right to the chase of what you really want to get out of your experience without unnecessary smoke and mirrors, the "fake" American platitudes that the Europeans can't stand. If you want really unmitigated directness, go experience the Dutch! So once you factor that aspect into your learning experience, you'll find that it's extremely rare to find a truly rude person barking unfriendliness at you in Germany. Sure, there are off balanced people in all lands of the world, but we have way more kooks who would do that in the US when you're out in public now...just wear your favorite pro or anti political T-shirt to Walmart and see what you get! I agree, Chiemsee is never "Keem-sea." Your English brain formed your audio reception to "see" years ago and when you hear or "see" the word, your brain can just change the sound into "sea." You have to look at the word as a whole band new unit "Keem-zay" and you'll always get it right. I had a Mexican employee at my B&B in Phoenix who only spoke Spanish, so I learned that language with her help over 10 years, then I moved to Mexico for the next 11 years and I can manage any situation I need to including construction of a second story onto my house. I just had to convince her it was "required" that she repeat my mistakes back to me in the correct form! As to the brain forming visual-aural cues to pronunciations...her daughter spoke Spanish from home but started school in Phoenix and never took any Spanish classes. At 12 I showed her a simple text in Spanish and she couldn't read it! Bilingual but hispano-illiterate. She hated it but her mother forced her to take Spanish in high school to learn how to read and write her own native language. Kevin has developed his German "R" pronunciation nicely in this video. Grayson is a prime example of how kids can get the pronunciation immediately, he's great and his grammar is already catching up. Next year you two will need to use him for speaking practice! I'm so envious, I wish my parents had offered me what you're giving your brood...I have to be satisfied with a German accent that sounds like Swabian where I worked to hide any Americanisms. Twenty-one years of Spanish has nearly erased my gringo accent in that one though!

    I always wonder about the American way of eating... First everything is cut small with the knife, then you put it aside and eat the pieces with the fork. In D and the EU, all food is eaten piecemeal with the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right hand. You cut a piece of meat or similar. Take it off and pick it up with the fork, eat it and the process starts all over again. First to cut everything into bite-sized pieces is okay, if you want to make it easier for children to eat. As an adult, it is not customary to do so. From that, the food cools down much too quickly.
    Beef rolls are one of the most loved dishes in Germany. Together with dumplings and apple red cabbage, they are extremely popular - and also easy to prepare. All you have to do is buy the roulades that have been cut at the butcher's, pass mustard on it, add salt and pepper, add some onions and sour cucumbers (better known as pickles) as well as fat or mixed bacon, roll up the whole thing, fry it and then stew... and then enjoy

    Welcome in the German Alps. Not far from your new home in Bavaria is one of the best locations in the German Alps: th-cam.com/video/DAtvupNKzEU/w-d-xo.html I believe you will be amazed If you visit this location. And there's another very, very impressive location which is called "Grosser Ahornboden". It's already in Austria, but you can only reach this place from Germany. You would have to drive in the direction of Bad Tölz then to the Silvenstein reservoir and further into the wild, pristine Isar valley. A great, impressive landscape. Then in the direction of Hinterriss to the end of the toll road. You will not forget this sight of the ancient maple trees and the 1km in front of you towering mountains (well over 2500m high). The Wendelstein (accessible from Bayrischzell) is not that far away either from your home, but unfortunately a bit crowded with tourists. A cable car also leads up here (open at 9 AM). It's a 100m ascent to the summit and a wonderful circular path around the summit.

    Just one little point: did you have a chewing gum in your mouth while speaking to us in the car? Not a good idea. And don't you think at least your two older sons are old enough to use the cutlery and cut their cordon bleu themselves? Don't do this when school mates are around, that would be most embarrassing. Sehr peinlich!
    You've pronounced the Chiemsee correctly, but I would never use it without an article. In English you can say A nice day at Lake Superior. But in German we say A nice day at the Chiemsee/ ein schöner Tag am ( = an dem) Chiemsee.
