The Big Orange is great but the Orange Burst has turned into my 'always on' pedal for just a touch of grit in my clean tone.
I'm a huge fan of Caline! I started picking up their stuff when I started playing guitar because they were inexpensive, but comparing them to some of my pricier stuff, they still hold their own incredibly well. Their TS clone, the CP-49 Midlander, is hands-down my favorite TS that I've ever used. I've compared it to a bunch of other clones and even a genuine TS-Mini, but the Caline offers far more range of control over the gain. The Pure Sky is also a classic that I use all the time. Their 10-band EQ is cheap and works perfectly. I recently picked up the Mellow Drive and it's just fantastic, very solid "warm" and "creamy" OD. They are certainly several steps above the other China-based clone manufacturers, kind like how Joyo has been putting out more unique and well-branded stuff lately.
@@drewwynne736 From what I know those two are also (at least somewhat) based on the Timmy, so the Pure Sky probably shares some DNA with them (being based on the Timmy as well). That said, I wouldn't call it a straight-up Timmy clone. It doesn't have a clipping toggle, but its still super versatile - lot's of range in the gain knob so you can go from nearly clean-boost territory to moderate overdrive. More versatile than a TS9 for sure. If you play with the knobs you can certainly get quite close to a Timmy, if that's what you really want. But I see it as just another flavor in my overdrive toolbox. It's so inexpensive I just tell people to go ahead and get one - if they don't love it, hey it's only $30. Plus, it probably has the most re-sale value of any other Caline because that's usually the one pedal people go for even if they don't know about any of the other Caline stuff.
Major props for the deep cut bringing up Mineral. I wore out my The Power of Failing and EndSerenading cds when they came out. Lots of memories of late summer drives, windows down, with these albums blasting. Then of course The Gloria Record! Great stuff!
Josh, love your dedication to bringing us understanding of an industry that we all love. Rock on and best wishes. I am tempted to call you big foot but want you to know how much I enjoy your channel and pedals.
I emailed ON to see if the had any Fairchild branded merch and they didn't email me back Coilcraft, Nichicon, and Würth sent me a bunch of cool stuff though
Caline is my favorite affordable pedal company. I have their Medusa and Pegasus Klon klones, and I also have their Mellow Drive Dumble/Zendrive type, their Pure Sky Timmy type, their Captain Silver TS808/TS9, their Queen Bee Sweet Honey clone, the Enchanted Tone, and their Highway Man RC Booster clone, which is my latest favorite, as well as the Movall Minotaur, their mini Klon type. All the new Movall pedals are rebranded Azor pedals (which I have a few of too), which is Caline's mini line. Dolamo and Pigtone are also rebranded Caline pedals. My favorites are the Medusa, Queen Bee, Highway Man (I actually have the Dolamo version, the yellow overdrive), Mellow Drive, Movall Minotaur (Azor AP-320), the Azor AP-308 (mini version of the Pure Sky), and the Azor Leon OCD clone. I used to have the Orange Burst BB preamp clone, the Midlander TS, and the Big Orange too. The next ones that I want are the American Sound, British Sound, California Sound, and AC Tone, their versions of the Tech 21 Character pedals, which Joyo also has

So you had Matthews Effects on once for an interview and y'all played the Chemist and I thought wow, what an odd combo of effects in one pedal...I'd never buy that. Thanks for all you do Josh!
If you look up Mineral on Spotify this is what it says- “When Mineral broke up in 1998, they had been together for only four years and released only two full-lengths, yet their shaping of the indie rock landscape cannot be overstated. The Austin four got together in 1994 and wasted no time in blanketing the country and cranking out 7"s, initially hooking with the label of tourmates Christy Front Drive, The Audio Concept, and Caulfield Records. A zine editor in Colorado, impressed with Mineral's groundbreaking blend of power and emotion, sent a 7" to the chief of fledgling Crank! Records, Jeff Matlow. The band received repeated phone calls that day from Matlow, and thus began a marriage that would launch both label and band into underground fame. Mineral's first full-length, The Power of Failing, was a powerful success and inspired a rabid following among scenesters. The young band's grasp of dynamics and thoughtful lyrics about coming of age also influenced indie rock bands everywhere, as their sound still permeates across the underground. End Serenading turned out to be the end for Mineral, which had agreed to do its next record with Interscope, a record that never happened. Still only in their early twenties, bandmembers moved onto new projects: singer/guitarist Chris Simpson and bassist Jeremy Gomez began the Gloria Record and drummer Gabe Wiley joined Pop Unknown. ~ Ron DePasquale, Rovi”
I played Donner pedals through a Joyo Zombie and it sounded just as good as someone playing Boss pedals with a Mesa Dual Rectifier. The budget gear doesn't always suck like it used to
Found some Caline pedals and power supplies on Aliexpress and amazon and bought them recently, only to find this video made 3 years ago. Happy with my purchases now!
7/50 is only .14, but the correct math is $50/7 effects ... or $7.14 per effect. :-D Thanks for the informative, humorous, and entertaining video! I subscribed to your channel and purchased an "Enchanted Tone" before the video even finished.
After seeing this episode I want to purchase the Enchanted Tone overdrive just for that cool paint job on it. I might not use it or I might either way that’s one of the coolest looking pedals ever!
I love your format! It's super engaging and fun to watch but I wish you would do more BASS content. Review some bass pedals and demo your favs on the bass!
You being a die hard pedal guy, I'd like to see you mess around with a katana mk2. You are the guy I wanna hear compare the sounds to the real pedals. I think it's an awesome amp(clean, crunch and high gain), but I still find myself using most of the pedals on my board over the effects in the unit.

I have a Caline 10 band EQ pedal that's an "always on" right in the middle of my pedalboard! Can't recall what I paid for it exactly, but it was around $50. edit: just looked it up on Amazon, price is $38.85.
I have that pedal as well. Payed less than $40 for it. Freaking stellar pedal. I also have their "midlander" od pedal. Definitely a solid tube screamer clone, cost like $32.

From my great grandmother: Mushroom Stuffed Cabbage. 1 head of cabbage (about 3 pounds) 1 large can sauerkraut 1 cup ground mushrooms (either canned, dry, or frozen) 1 cup rice (uncooked) 2 tablespoons oleo 1 medium onion 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper For sauce as brown gravy - 1 tablespoon each of shortening and flour Cut core out of cabbage to loosen leaves. Place cabbage into boiling water for a few minutes. Remove leaves, cut away the thick rib from cabbage leaves. Fry onions in the oleo until soft, add to mushrooms, rice. Season to taste. Place about 1 tablespoon in each cabbage leaf and roll. Drain sauerkraut, use about half the kraut in the bottom of the pot. Arrange rolls over the kraut, cover with remaining kraut. Fill pot of water to top of the rolls. Cook slowly for about 2 hours. Sauce: brown flour in shortening. Add about a cup of water. Bring to boil, then pour over the cabbage rolls. Cook for just about 5 more minutes.
Josh we enjoy every episode of your show. You're funny, honest, and great for the community. Thanks for all your work and knowledge. (No free schwag/pedals required)
I bought the Pegasus after seeing your show where you side-by-side compared pedals to the Clon, and it did not disappoint. Thank you for enriching our tonal palette Sir. Much respect. Cheers
A few years a ago I reviewed a couple of Caline pedals for a Dutch music magazine. Among them where the "Crazy Cacti", the "Englishman", the "Orange Burst" and the "Tuner/Power CP-09". Though the price of these pedals also were low, they sounded surprisingly good. I often use the "Englishman" and the Power/Tuner and they do a great job among a lot of other (much more expensive) pedals that I own. It's nice to see that Josh is also positive about them and since I really trust his expertise I got myself a "Jaguar", that arrived today. After playing with it for about two hours I can only say that it's again good value for the money. I also think it's awesome that Josh, being a manufacturer of his own brand JHS, makes these great clips about other brands! And as always in his own way that I like a lot! Thanks!!
I use the Caline 5 power supply and it works great but I've never tried any pedals. I do have a NuX Atlantic that has a nice shimmer function by holding down the reverb button so you can just add some to taste.
Ya I use the Caline P-1 pwr unit. And it's been perfect for over 2 yrs. Powering 12 now but I've had as many as 15 pedals out of it. No Caline pedals on my board but 3 of them on my shelf. On the under $50 range I got a Donner Echo square, a Mooer liquid phase, and a Coolmusic modulation pedal on my board. Taking off some Boss stuff to try something different. The 3 of these costs just under $110. Including shipping.
EndSerenading shaped my songwriting in huge ways. Those guitars work so beautifully together. And those drums playing 16th notes adds so much more emotion to the songs. One of my all time favourite albums. I also love Power of Failing so much.

Josh, a question: What’s the tipping point between copying a pedal and copyright infringement? How can anyone make, for instance, a Boss RC-1 clone and not get instantly sued?
I’ve heard it explained that you can’t really patent guitar pedal circuits because they are relatively simple + derivative. For instance, the boss RC-1 didn’t invent the whole concept of the looper, so they can’t really claim it as entirely their own. That would be like Nike trying to patent the running shoe because they make a new, really good running shoe. At least I think that’s how it is. Copyright stuff doesn’t make a whole lot of sense IMO 🤣
The don't-take-legal-advice-from-a-youtube-comment basic answer is that a circuit can't be copyrighted. It can be patented, _if_ it's sufficiently new and different, but patenting an invention is an arduous and expensive process and doesn't pay off unless you're a big corporation with lawyers to burn. If it's just a tweak to an established circuit, there's nothing to patent - especially if anybody else has already made that tweak, which is the case for most clone/mod pedals. Software _can_ be copyrighted, and a fully dsp pedal usually isn't much more than a processor and the I/O, so a digital pedal can't be directly cloned - but it's fine if your digital pedal works exactly the same way as somebody else's, as long as you write the code yourself. Obviously, artwork and designs can be copyrighted and trademarked, so you can't directly copy those, but nobody can stop you from making it pretty clear what pedal you're cloning.
To patent something it has to be novel and not derivative of something already existing. There's nothing in signal modulation or alteration that could be proposed as novel at this point. Maybe an implantable wireless amp receiver effects so all you have to do is play your guitar into a wireless transmitter. Silent jamming.
American buddy of mine once told me to stop overthinking the purchase and just get both pedals I've been deciding between "since it would cost less than a lunch" Yeah buddy, cheaper than lunch for a week and some...
Josh, you constantly disprove the "Those who can't, teach" theory. Thank you for being such a great historian and demonstrator of new tech as well. I look forward to every one of these videos.
Dude just cause someone does get paid doesn’t mean it’s not honest. You can hear it for yourself. Henning Paula gets paid but his reviews are honest as they can be. You get paid regardless if you do a great review or not lol. I don’t understand you can actually hear the tone in these pedals. I don’t know if I could make money by tellin people there stuff is junk or not I would do it. Just saying.

Is the Pure Sky similar to the Walrus Mayflower and Earthquaker Westwood? Or is it more of a Timmy clone?
Dude I looooooove that Mineral album! It definitely was a surprise that you pulled out that record. Really apreciate it!
The pure sky from Caline is insanely good for $ 25-30
That Multimod demo was great. I could see a lot of creativity sparking from that pedal.
Holy crap, the reverb and multi mod sounded really, really good. I mean really, really good.
Immediately added the wonderland to my “petals I want” list after hearing it for two seconds that is magical.
Some of Caline's pedals are really good. The Orange Burst and pure sky are great and sound great live as well.
I just found this channel recently and I love it. The humour, the gear, everything about it.
Welcome!!
At first I thought Josh was wearing a Fairchild Semiconductor t-shirt.
I emailed ON to see if the had any Fairchild branded merch and they didn't email me back
Coilcraft, Nichicon, and Würth sent me a bunch of cool stuff though
Best reviews on the web bar none! Great pedals for the working man.
The next ones that I want are the American Sound, British Sound, California Sound, and AC Tone, their versions of the Tech 21 Character pedals, which Joyo also has
End Serenading is one of my favorite Emo albums of all time! It's so freaking good. Thank you for recognizing pre-2000s emo! My emo journey: Rites of Spring > Braid > Mineral > The Get Up Kids, Saves the Day.
So you had Matthews Effects on once for an interview and y'all played the Chemist and I thought wow, what an odd combo of effects in one pedal...I'd never buy that. So I started working on a small board the other day and was trying to decide between octave, chorus or something else. Then I remembered the Chemist had both and then some. It's on order. Thanks for all you do Josh!
I really like honesty.
Thanks for your honesty.
…you do a fantastic show! Humor is good to have especially on 50 dollar pedals!
I just bought the Caline Time/Space echo delay. The case is Tardis blue. Perfect!
ANY jelly babies inside? They really are rather good you know!

Finally have a Wonderland coming. I think this video created some hype! Stoked to finally be getting one, thanks for the tip!
I played Donner pedals through a Joyo Zombie and it sounded just as good as someone playing Boss pedals with a Mesa Dual Rectifier. The budget gear doesn't always suck like it used to
Some of the Joyo Bantamps take Pedals really well. I can unleash hell with my Meteor and and a proper fuzz.
Add a Joyo Uzi and it'll melt your face with plexi-ness.
Donner Morpher is the shit! Same with the Jet Convolution
Found some Caline pedals and power supplies on Aliexpress and amazon and bought them recently, only to find this video made 3 years ago. Happy with my purchases now!
Come on. Do a Caline pt 2 (or 3,4,etc.). Would love to see those others in action
Agree!!!!
7/50 is only .14, but the correct math is $50/7 effects ... or $7.14 per effect. :-D
Thanks for the informative, humorous, and entertaining video!
I subscribed to your channel and purchased an "Enchanted Tone" before the video even finished.
Thank you @durelle78 for pointing this out! Thank you JHS for continuously creating entertaining content
I think the thing that makes JHS show work is Josh is doing it as a fan who happens to be in the industry. Not an industry guy playing at being a fan.
Josh, your delivery is getting really good. You made me laugh out loud about four times during that video.
Drat you, Josh! My cart:
1x Caline DCP-03 Devilfish Chorus + Delay Pedal
1x Caline CP-58 Baker Street Marshall Amp Sim Pedal (Jaguars are sold out everywhere, sigh)
1x Caline CP-506 Multimod 7 Modulations Pedal
1x Caline CP-28 Ultra Analog Chorus (in case the Devilfish isn't quite my thing. I have no chorus pedal at all!)
😈
When you were demonstrating the Wonderland, I closed my eyes and heard the background singers on "You Can't Always Get What You Want". Amazing
I have a Caline 10 band EQ pedal that's an "always on" right in the middle of my pedalboard! Can't recall what I paid for it exactly, but it was around $50. edit: just looked it up on Amazon, price is $38.85.
I constantly hear that is one of the best EQ pedals around. Not even just for its price but against others 3 or 4 times the price.
@Richard Clutter Which EQ model? I am looking for one.
@@markr2159 I think he is referring to the CP-24
@@markr2159 Mine's the CP-24. There is also the CP-81, $49.99 on Amazon.
I have that pedal as well. Payed less than $40 for it. Freaking stellar pedal. I also have their "midlander" od pedal. Definitely a solid tube screamer clone, cost like $32.
Thanks for the pedal reviews! And thanks for a "Mineral" shout out! Brings me back to my angsty '90's teenage years.
Greg Norman is the golfer known as "The Shark"
The Great White Shark!
what a great channel, thanks Josh and friends
I've heard about Caline, I like their stuff but, I'm a bass player and I really like having a blend knob which is hard to find in a lot of effects that I like
That subtle dive at 9:38 sounded gorgeous with the shimmer
The Caline Pure Sky overdrive is great for the money too, and their Snake Bite reverb is very nice as well.
Pure sky is such a good overdrive
I love the Pure Sky and Orange Burst, separate or stacked
My favorite pedal company literally just referenced one of my favorite Disney movies, thank you Josh for being you!
The most shocking part of this video is Josh’s reveal of his Walmart runners. 😱😱
Lol , I bought shoes at Dollar General on sale for $5 that are tied w 1 other pair for being my favorites of all time. They lasted 3 years. Nothing better about Nike except celebrity endorsement.
From my great grandmother: Mushroom Stuffed Cabbage.
1 head of cabbage (about 3 pounds)
1 large can sauerkraut
1 cup ground mushrooms (either canned, dry, or frozen)
1 cup rice (uncooked)
2 tablespoons oleo
1 medium onion
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
For sauce as brown gravy - 1 tablespoon each of shortening and flour
Cut core out of cabbage to loosen leaves.
STAGGERED the Pure Sky isn't considered one of their best by Josh. That pedal is insane value for money.
Same. I own the Pure Sky. Probably the best cheap pedal I've ever owned.
me as well it's my favorite overdrive pedal that i own, including some much more expensive pedals
I've got one and it is, frankly, astonishing!
Josh we enjoy every episode of your show. You're funny, honest, and great for the community. Thanks for all your work and knowledge. (No free schwag/pedals required)
I think I know why the Osmium pedal is called that!
On the periodic table Osmium is the heaviest metal.
Did you see what they did there?????
:)
I bought the Pegasus after seeing your show where you side-by-side compared pedals to the Clon, and it did not disappoint. Thank you for enriching our tonal palette Sir. Much respect. Cheers
I don't care how good it is... but I ain't going to where you get your coffee. :D
The Nux Atlantic is SO good.
Only Caline pedal I used was a 10 band EQ that was broken, upgraded to a Joyo R series one.
Was not expecting the Mineral RECORD TIME. That is a great record! Great episode!
The fact that josh has children is always so shocking to me and I don’t know why xD
I know, right? I look at Josh and think wow how does a twelve year old have a whole company. (i have ye olde)
EndSerenading shaped my songwriting in huge ways. Those guitars work so beautifully together. And those drums playing 16th notes adds so much more emotion to the songs. One of my all time favourite albums. I also love Power of Failing so much.
Wait - what does Mineral have to do w/this vid? I’m truly curious
@@zarr_music4797 EndSerenading is the album recommendation in this video.
You have to be a complete pedal nerd to show off other companies. I love this.
18:00 the Andes mountains are located in South America and go from Venezuela to Argentina. The bird you have there is an Andean Condor, a native bird from the Andes.
"The DS1 when you dime down the tone control..., it basically kills you, your skin falls of and you can't breathe". Nailed it!
Josh: "50 dollars, thats three coffees?"
Me: "Wait.. thats 9 bottles of good wine, where I live?" ;)
No bez przesady z "dobrym". Ale coś w tym jest
And about 15 cups of coffee, easily
That's twenty coffees if you like black coffee.
American buddy of mine once told me to stop overthinking the purchase and just get both pedals I've been deciding between "since it would cost less than a lunch"
Yeah buddy, cheaper than lunch for a week and some...
@@zpacula He must live in New York City or L.A. because here in the south $50 can be close to 5 or more lunches.
That jaguar sounds great. I have a Ragnarok reverb delay and I bloody love it.
"Sometimes you just gotta Drop D and play a bunch of bullcrap. That's what I just did there"
Great show - caline’s got some killer gear! It’s older than the new hotness series, but the Pure Sky simply slays.
Sounding gray. That's synesthesia! Bonus level achieved!
the sounds coming from Josh's amplifier taste like colors.
Josh, you constantly disprove the "Those who can't, teach" theory. Thank you for being such a great historian and demonstrator of new tech as well. I look forward to every one of these videos.
It’s nice that he’s not getting paid, so we get an honest review
Dude just cause someone does get paid doesn’t mean it’s not honest. You can hear it for yourself. Henning Paula gets paid but his reviews are honest as they can be. You get paid regardless if you do a great review or not lol. I don’t understand you can actually hear the tone in these pedals. I don’t know if I could make money by tellin people there stuff is junk or not I would do it. Just saying.
I love you guys so so much. So wholesome and kind and cool to share other brands.
keep it up
Dang Josh stop with the self deprecation on your guitar playing, your demos are great
Night Wolf sounds like the follow up scent to Sex Panther.
As someone with even bigger feet than Josh (UK size 15); the frustration of small/close foot-switches is real! (but not a dealbreaker). And that golfer you were trying to remember - must have been Greg Norman as he had a tiger shark logo on his gear ;-)
"JHS doesn't get paid promotion. Especially today"
Look into it.
Caline “pure sky” is one of my favorite overdrives.
