  • This week in our travels across the beautiful English Cotswolds we come to the village Charlbury, on the eastern bank of the river Evenlode. It's a well connected village by rail, and has a wonderful church as well as the magnificent nearby Cornbury Park estate.

      I retired there, and you are going to make yourself unpopular with some locals by introducing it at "the village of Charlbury" as they jealously guard its status as a town having received a charter from Henry III in 1256.
      In any event, it's a great place to live, wonderful community spirit and in normal circumstances, has local events like the beer festival, a two day free music festival and the annual Street Fair (for which I'm secretary) held on the third Saturday of every September.
      Incidentally, the major music festival that is referenced in the video is, presumably, the Cornbury Festival, but that has not been held in the grounds of Cornbury House but, confusingly, a few miles away at Great Tew. What is not held at Cornbury is called the Wilderness festival, which is rather more like the Latitude festival, and covers a wide range of arts. Yes, it does have music, but it's not necessarily the centre of the festival in the way it is for Cornbury. It's also not to be confused with Charlbury's own free two day music festival, which is the Riverside festival.

    Great to see Charlbury on your travels, important to note that locals will have your guts for garters if you call it a village!

    Time stamp 0:42 - Charlbury is classed as a town not a village. There was a market here back in the day

    Charlbury railway station WAS NOT built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The design of the 'chalet' building is in most respects one of Brunel's designs but when the Oxford, Worcester & Wolverhampton Railway was under construction due to a dispute the OWW fell out with the Great Western Railway, of who Brunel was Chief Engineer. This resulted in Brunel resigning from the OWW and the work building the OWW line passed to one of Brunel's assistants by the name of R P Brereton - it was Brereton who was responsible for building Charlbury station, although retaining Brunel's plan & design.

    I've had the pleasure of living in Charlbury for 13 months for most of the year 1990. An American... I helped support RAF Upper Heyford just before the Gulf war was in full bore. I was one who loved the pub with the older locals who had the best stories to tell.

    That railway sign brings back memories. I’ve only ever travelled through Charlbury for business in the 1990s when I had to visit Group4 who had offices in a large house on the hill overlooking Broadway. It was a lovely journey from Paddington to Morton in Marsh and then a drive out towards Broadway.
    Thank you for your wonderful, soothing films.

    Now here is one place that I have never visited. I was always puzzled by the fact that such a small place had a railway station.

    • @TheEulerID
      @TheEulerID 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is only one larger settlement on the route of that line through the Cotswolds, and that's at Moreton-in-Marsh. As the line follows the valley of the Evenlode, then it was just a natural place to put a station (and there are several stations at smaller locations on the line, although most get only a two or three trains a day).
      Charlbury station had quite large sidings as , when it was built, it was used more for the movement of goods, including agricultural products than for passengers. There was even a gas works and a coal depot. Rural lines were very important in that regard and there are villages around which it also serviced.
      Perhaps more surprising is that the line survived the Beeching cuts, although the nearby presence of the chairman of British Rail, Sir Peter Parker is believed by some to have played a part, although a more prosaic reason is that it is a through-route to Worcester. Other lines, such as the one from Cheltenham to Banbury which went via Bourton-on-the-Water and Chipping Norton as well as the one to Witney and beyond did not survive.

      @@TheEulerID Years ago when I was using trains a lot I noticed a service that terminated at Charlbury. I thought then 'why doesn't it go onto a larger town.' A friend actually said, joking, that it must because someone important in the railways lived there. And so it seems.
