  • We're back with our first video of 2022, visiting t he lovely little village of Stanton, just south of Broadway on the western escarpment of the Cotswolds. This is a classic English village with a church packed full of interesting architecture, a brilliant pub and a newer development of houses that show modern house construction can be done sensibly, in the local vernacular.

    Its so nice, to spend some time on a Sunday afternoon, losing myself into such a rural delight as Stanton and I often wonder if the residents realise, just how lucky they are to be able to live in one of the most beautiful villages in the world - never mind the UK. Its all absolutely gorgeous. Thank you Robin and Ross for your kindness, its all very much appreciated.

      We are extremely lucky to live where we do! It’s stunning! Only downside is the younger local generation such as myself often have to move away has housing and cost of living is very pricey! Hey ho, still an honour to call myself a cotswold chap.

    Thank you for pointing out the Wedgewood cottages. They really are an example of social housing done right. So often it has spoiled the character of villages by ignoring the local vernacular. Also, agree with you that is would be nice to restrict vehicular access to these villages. Think how much prettier Stanton would be if the roads weren't lined with vehicles or how much better the ambience of Broadway would be if it weren't choked with traffic.

      Hi Ian. I have been looking today at an aerial photo of Bampton, my home town, taken in 1961 when I was just 13 years old and there isn't a car in sight. It's startling how quickly we have simply absorbed the hideousness of our surroundings as a result of the motor. I am, of course, only too aware of the amazing benefits personal transport has given us all but the aesthetics of our lives are very certainly badly affected. Roll on driverless transport pods without the need to line the streets to store the things when not in use.

      @@robinshuckburgh5561 You and I are the same age. I grew up in a semi-rural place, with a horse farm to the north and a camellia farm to the east of our property in California, all obliterated by a freeway. I hope your beloved Cotswolds remain as they are into the distant future and beyond. Thank you for photographing the church interior while illuminated by afternoon sunlight. We can see it all much more clearly. I love your videos!

    The idea of horse-drawn carriages has been haunting me for quite some time. Glad I'm not the only one. I would build lanes specifically for the passage of cars with a complete ban on the main roads in such villages. The place would look a lot better if the cars didn't pile up in front of these stunning houses.

    • @robinshuckburgh5561
      @robinshuckburgh5561 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The little dogs need coats too. They're shaking with cold. I read that in my small hometown in southern US many years ago some men rode out on horseback to protest the coming of the railroad. They thought it would bring sin and vice. It came. Not sure if sin and vice accelerated or not.
