    Oh so that explains why my tiny little antenna does better then everyone else with their massive ones up the high country the other week yet not so good out home on the flat. Most of my driving is on the flat so will be getting another just for that reason. Cheers

      if you drive up on top of a high hill and want to get out a long way the bigger antennas will work better too.
      You might access repeaters that you can't with the smaller one or get back to a home base station clearly when before you couldn't

      Rubbish.
      This guy is full of shit.
      He's a 4WD expert, not a radio expert.
      Using a 15 cm 3dbi mobile antenna anywhere but the city with repeaters is stupid.
      Use a ZCG Scalar 6.5 dbi elevated feed ground independent like I use.
      A 6.5 dbi gain antenna has an approx 45° angle of radiation which is perfect for mountainous terrain.
      If you were driving through a valley with a 12 dbi antenna then you have issues as the anglr of radiation is approx 15-20° degrees meaning your signal will be aimed at the hills, not over them.
      Don't listen to this guy, he knows about 5% of what he says.

      @@Dazzwidd exactly.
      If on top of a mountain a 9dbi or 12 dbi colinear UHF antenna is ideal.
      But using a 3 dbi 15 cm long antenna in the high country is stupid.
      They are made for cities for use through repeaters.
      Use a ZCG Scalar 6.5 dbi elevated feed antenna, gaurantee you will not look back.
      Don't waste your money on GME, Uniden, Mobile One or RFI antennas, they are no match for ZCG Scalar.

    Over here in NZ there is very limited range of mobile antennas available. Jaycar over here only stock one or two UHF & AM CB antennas.So you are stuck with what they stock..Also mountings,no Gutter grips for vans or cars,no mounts for Bullbars etc.Also they are only selling hand helds now.They dont stock mobile rigs anymore. They dont do GME Oricon or Uniden anymore. Only hand helds for kids.So if wanting to install a mobile UHF or AM CB we need to go to Repco or Supercheap Auto.Even they have a very limited range.So no one over here is speicalizeing in CB or UHF radio anymore.Not like the old days of Dick Smith,he had everything for everyone.We all miss Dicky licky !

      jungle man yes dick smith shops use to have the lot lol. What a shame gme etc not over there mate. Ebay should get what you can't locally though. Surely aussie ebay stores sell to nz?

      G'day.
      If you want the very best mobile and base 11 metre and UHF antennas look at ZCG Scalar.
      They make the worlds finest antennas.
      Made in Gippsland Victoria.
      I've tested and used all brands and types and nothing outperforms ZCG Scalar.

    Be careful with wire or stainless whips. They work harden and can snap off without warning. I always use fibreglass.

    • @garynewton1263
      @garynewton1263 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep. Fibreglass whips are way more reliable.
      For starters steel whips bend in the wind at 60-100kmh and it affects your signal.
      Fibreglass whips are less prone to this.

  • @adelarsen9776
    @adelarsen9776 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    1) For the UHF 477 MHz CB the best antenna and location is a 1/4 Wave flexible whip antenna mounted in the centre of the roof - drilled and sealed. The 1/4 Wave whip is only about 20cm in length and will out-perform any high gain antenna on a bull bar. If you have a ute or wagon with no roof rack then this is the best antenna and position. It's virtually invisible and won't get broken off.
    2) If you have a roof rack or other thing on the roof then a gutter mount with a 1/4 Wave antenna and spring is almost as good.
    Both the positions above are ZERO gain which is what you want driving around in hills, mountains, valleys, cities and undulating terrain. Unless you live on the Nullarbor Plain then you want LOW GAIN antennas.
    3) A Half Wave length whip antenna on a gutter mount is also excellent and will out-perform any of the higher gain antennas. A gutter mount Half Wave whip is about 2 dBi which is also excellent for talking in most terrain and geographical areas.
    4) Remember, if you want to talk over a hill, round a hill, through a valley and through thick bush then LESS dBi is better. Don't believe the marketing BS.

    • @garynewton1263
      @garynewton1263 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      WRONG.
      You are clearly a novice.
      THE very best antenna for UHF CB is ZCG Scalar 6.5dbi elevated feed ground independent antenna.
      I did testing of all antenna brands and types in 2011 near Melbourne and I can gaurantee for a fact that the ZCG Scalar 6.5 dbi outperformed all of them at 15 watts.
      Drilling a hole in the centre of your vehicles roof with a 3 dbi 15 cm antenna gives you no advantage over a ground independent antenna whatsoever.
      15 watts x 3dbi=45 watts EIRP.
      15 watts x 6.5dbi=97.5 watts EIRP.
      And you say a 3 dbi 15 cm antenna installed in the centre of the roof is better?
      You are deluded.
      Installing a mobile antenna in the centre of a vehicles roof only gives you an equal groundplane radiation pattern on HF frequencies, not on UHF CB Radio.
      Read some reference books before getting it wrong!

      At the time of video it would have been GME I now have an RFI one. Yes paired with a cradle to suit your phone it can boost coverage in low signal strength areas. Have a look on the Telstra websites coverage map it will show you the areas where extra service is available with a antenna/car kit. Cheers

      @@4wdingMates In a campervan often the difference in 1 bar and no service is sitting the phone on the roofrack and if i put one these aerials up there then it would open up further. But i'm looking forward to starlink to wipe Telstra out soon enough, waiting for prices to come down bit more. Might buy a booster in meantime, its mainly to hotspot internet or just get internet on the iphone. Thanks.

    In your opinion if I had 2 UHFS, One 3dbi and one 9dbi, How far apart would they need to be to not interfere? Would either side of my bulbar work? ( a metre or so ) or would I need to stick one on the roof?

    • @4wdingMates
      @4wdingMates  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hi mate, not sure you can run 2 different antennas like that as may cause interference etc need to be well separated I'd imagine.
      I'd just run 1 uhf 2-3 antennas install the one that suits the terrain/environment you're in.
      the 9db is really only good for open flat country no trees say crossing nullabour plain
      it's a narrow band whip. the less db the broader band etc.
      I never use my 9b even open areas. best spot for reception etc would be roof rack. height is might. last thing don't use a T piece joiner to put 2 aerials into 1 uhf... it won't end well for ya.
      cheers

    • @danielhermes4330
      @danielhermes4330 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey mate to help shed some light on your question, you can have 2 antennas right next to one another as long as they are operating on a freq difference of at least 10Mhz and you wont have any interference. Obviously with that said operating in a different bandwidth (HF, VHF, UHF) is optimal. Hope this helps!

    • @Dazzwidd
      @Dazzwidd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      one on one end of the bull bar and the other on the other end will work okay.
      If you can mount a high gain antenna up on the roof and make it so you can fold it down or screw shorter antennas into it, the one on the roof will get you performance to where the bull bar antenna won't even start to hear what the roof one will at times
