- It's very handy if you know how to use a repeater tower for long distance UHF radio communication.
A repeater tower in the Victorian High Country can be connected to via channels 1 through 8 on a 40 channel UHF radio hand set.
Using these repeater tower channels for long distance communications, could be very helpful in an emergency situation if you are out of mobile phone reception and incase you don't have a Satellite phone.
It's still not guaranteed that you will pick up a connection with a repeater tower, but knowing the selected channels to try for a connection is very much a safety thing to know.
Have you had to use a repeater tower for an emergency?
Ralph is a very smart and friendly bloke. He looks after many radio sites in Gippsland, all the way across to Maramingo Hill, near Mallacoota.
@@nikpresservk3ba779 absolutely mate.
He is a top bloke.
He sure what he was talking about.
Very knowledgeable on how the radios worked.
Cheers Tim.
Keeping off the input channels (31-38) is very important to stop clogging up the repeaters in the area you are travelling. You can have your voice retransmitted for 100km unknowingly doing this....... annoying local farmers and regular users of repeaters. Very common to hear 4wders chitter chatting to themselves and it's coming out of the channel 8 repeaters near Dargo (they are talking on 38 )...... making the repeater useless for anyone needing it.
Great video Tim. You are a great influencer to stop this from happening. Keep up the good work.
Thanks heaps mate.
It was a very interesting video this one.
I sure learnt a lot.
Thanks for your reply and feedback.
Cheers Tim.
Great video Tim! good knowledge for all 4wders exploring the High Country!
Yeah spot on mate.
Very handy for all 4wders .
Thanks for your reply mate.
Cheers Tim.
The things you learn when you keep in touch with Tim. Didn’t know about that. Thanks.
Thanks Deane,
Thats great you found the video interesting.
A lot of people have learnt a lot from this video. That includes me mate.
Thanks heaps for your reply and feedback. I greatly appreciate it.
Cheers Tim.
That was brilliant. All the years that I have stared at and simply pressed buttons to no avail. Now I have some idea of what to do. Thanks heaps guys
G'day Ross,
Thats great mate.
Just never know one of those channel might come handy one day.
Thanks for your feedback.
Cheers Tim.
Great thought to showcase how repeaters work Tim , I am sure many people were not aware of what their UHF could do
G'day Roger,
Yeah spot on mate.
I for one have learnt a lot from the chat with Ralph.
Very interesting.
Thanks for your feedback mate.
Cheers Tim.
we use them here in the US a lot!! hundreds and hundreds of them all across America. here in Tennessee were i live we have 38 of them across the state and activate them in bad weather, so we all can chat as a bad storms comes across the state. good video mate!! keep up the good work.
G'day mate,
Thanks for dropping in from Tennessee.
I learnt a great deal about repeater channels from this video.
Thats amazing how you use them where you live to stay in contact during bad storms.
The replies have been very interesting, how people of all places are using these repeater towers.
Thanks heaps mate for your reply and feedback, i greatly appreciate it.
Cheers Tim.
Great video, a very under utilised resource. The more of us that use and listen to repeaters, the more useful they will be in case of an emergency.
Thanks mate.
It was very interesting having a chat with Ralph on this topic.
Very handy for all of us out 4wding.
Cheers Tim.
Wow never to late to learn something new. We spent last week in the Vic High Country to avoid the weekend rush on Channel 15 and had some convey blind spots, need to reassess which channel we use in future, thanks for this. 👍🏕
G'day Clive,
I hope you had a great trip last week mate.
This has been a great topic with a lot of people learning a great deal from it. Me included.
Thanks for your reply mate.
Cheers Tim.
Great interview mate
When I was game fishing with the solitary island's club off Coffs we use to use a repeater tower as we use to fish out very wide of the coast worked extremely well but obviously we had no obstruction as far as line of sight even know we couldn't see land. Cheers Bruce
G'day Bruce,
Thats unreal mate that you can use them while out fishing.
Very interesting topic this one.
Thanks for your reply and feedback mate.
Cheers Tim.
Thanks Tim great video. I was surprised though to hear channel 5 was not mentioned. I understand this is a Fire or emergency channel and not for general use. But thanks again 👍
Gday mate,
Very interesting topic that’s for sure.
Ch5 and 35 yes are National emergency channels.
Thanks a lot for your reply and feedback mate.
Cheers Tim.

Great video mate. It’s good information to have in the back of your head that you never know when it might come in handy.

Great info Tim. I've been meaning to follow something like this up.
I find when I've got my radio on scan I regularly only hear what appears to be half of a conversation on the 30 channels.
Thanks mate.
That’s great you found the video helpful.
Cheers Tim.
4:02 Sorry Tim don't mean to be nasty, But Oricom UHF radios are not something i would ever use again in my life time. I have installed a few for people over the years (as i have been doing electronics for a hobby for about 20 years) and found these radios to be of poor quality. GME or my choice is ICOM Australian owned company and made in Japan. Not all radios are made equal. I also use GME antennas one mounted on the bullbar and other one is located on the roof (excellent range). Now all that aside it would be great if people would not use repeaters to play around on, including the full blown swearing contests.
LOVED the video mate great bit of information.
G'day Adam,
I take anyones feedback mate.
This certainly isn't an advert for Oricom. It's just the radio i have, so i used it for that short clip in the video.,
As far as using the repeater channels. I have always wanted to gain a better under standing on how they work and can be used just for my self. For the use of a safety purpose, those repeater channels might just help someone out in an emergency situation. For that reason, i think the video is very handy
As so many replies have been very grateful for this video being made.
Thanks for your reply and feedback mate, i do greatly appreciate it.
Cheers Tim.
@@timbates4wdadventures G'day tim, yeah i fully understood that, just some people on other channels or chat forums think that Oricom is a good radio. but look each to their own. But i have been using my old ICOM 400pro now for many years and not once did it let me down apart from a snapped antenna (kids in car park). Plus my Icom lets say is not transmitting on 5watts either (repeater channels only) and a modified receiver to i can hear further. But i am now looking at the Icom 410pro as its the newer one for my everyday use radio.
Their will be no negative comments from me in regards to what you use as we all have our choices in equipment. And enjoyed the live stream the other night mate was a good one.
@@adamjones2025 thanks mate.
I’ve had that radio for nearly 2 yrs now, and so far it’s been no worries.
See if that keeps going. Lol
You have a top weekend.
@@timbates4wdadventures You too buddy. Having fun atm greasing under the patrol. Not many greasing points on these girls i have noticed.
@@adamjones2025 lol
Yeah that’s one handy thing with the Patrol.
Only a hand full of greasing points.
Great info Tim thanks.
4 wheeling and radio go hand in hand. I belong to a "Fox hunting" team - basically we drive around "listening" for radio signals from hidden transmitters, usually in the dark and compete with other teams to find them first. Several "hunts" per night and the tally to determine the winning team at a supper meet afterwards.
The vehicle doesn't have to be a 4x4, but it helps - aside from going down some very rough tracks, it has to house the equipment and wild direction finding antennas on the roof. We run a continuously rotating "quad" a 4' x 1.5' cuboid on the roof along with a swinging yagi - like a TV antenna - the stares and questions we get are amazing.
The quad sits about a foot above the roof and is basically a 3d rectangular shape (cuboid) made of wire 4' by 1.5'. We run computers, transceivers, other comms, and use direction finding methods to locate the hidden transmitters (fox).
Naturally we've been in hibernation here in VIC due to Covid, but the new year promises a renewed season.
G'day Benny,
Sounds like a heap of fun that you guys get up to with your comps in the night.
Cheers Tim.
Great topic tim good for people to know if they press the talk button on chl 1 to 8 and get a tail signal they can give their location if they need help if someone is injured or broken down just might save a life thanks Tim again

Yeah spot on mate.

Not sure mate.
I learnt a heap from it as well.
Very helpful video.

Thanks Tim. I just learnt something new! Cheers
Thats great mate.

Some good info there Tim! I definitely don't know enough about my CB. Couldn't help but notice the travel buddy jiggling around behind you - you might want to brace that a bit better so you don't have to scrape the pies off the inside :-) either that or maybe just chuck a can of peas in there and make it a pie floater :-)
Yeah mate, the towers are very handy to know about.
I'll check it out mate.
Cheers Tim.
Such a great topic Batesy, thanks mate.

It was very interesting hearing how they all work.

Gotta say I just saw a 4wd for sale that you don't see that often these days.
One of your patrols but the 4.2lt turbo diesel.
Plenty of good gear with it and set up for long distance cruising.
Don't reckon it will sit around for too long at all.
Thanks for the video as usual mate.
G'day mate,
Yeah, if t's any good it will be snapped up pretty quickly.
Thanks mate for your reply and feedback.

Hi Tim, awesome video on communication and how it is applied to 4wd. Really informative and simple. Great work mate.

So that's what the duplex button does.. I've just been mashing buttons sometimes to see what they do.
Cheers for this, super useful 4wd video.

Great video.. I am able to hear the echo from repeater but I am unable to transmit to another uhf with similar channel on repeater

Didn't know that by just listening to bounce back is an indicator of access to a repeater. That's handy to know. 👍🏽
Spot on mate.
I didn't know that either until making the video.
Very handy info for all.
Cheers Tim.
@@timbates4wdadventures I've set all the repeater channels on my UHF to duplex. Would you recommend in doing this to all duplex channels or just leave them simplex until it's needed?
@@Triple-N I think i would just leave it until it's needed mate.
Great work made the mystery of cb radio simple .now I understand what that button does and when to use it cheers mate

Thats great mate you found the video helpful.
I sure learnt a lot from it.

Is this the same for NSW? Great tutorial just installed the UHF last weekend perfect timing!!
G'day Terry,
Repeater towers are around Australia.
Not sure if the 1through 8 is the same for NSW.
Give it a go though mate.
Thanks a lot for your reply.
Cheers Tim.
@@timbates4wdadventures it would be the same for NSW as the duplex function is in the programming of the UHF radio.
So is it the same 1 though to 8 for a 80 channel uhf aswell? Great topic by the way.
G'day Matthew,
Yes it is.
Ralph only mentioned the 1 through 8 channels as a lot of people only have a 40 channel UHF.
Mine is 80 channel.
Thanks for your feedback.

Mate would you know if Davis plans road is open in December
G'day Nick,
It normally opens on November 30th each year.
But it has an extended closure this year due to the bush fires earlier this year.
I would try and call Parks Vic at Omeo if you can. They will have an up to date info on that track.
Cheers Tim.
Can pick up the CH3 mt wombat repeater from 15km south of the NSW border
Yeah righto.
They sure are handy to know where they are and use them in an emergency.

Ahh sorry about that mate.
Cheers Tim
At Matlock were the houses are there is a repeater tower.
Yeah righto mate.
I’ve seen that one at the top intersection
Handy being able to use them.
Cheers Tim.
Problem is when repeater is set up you always get idiots dropping carriers, stuffing it for everyone
Yeah, people shouldn’t transmit for general chats on those channels.
Cheers Tim
Everytime I have ever gone to ch1 to 8 all I hear on there is people yelling at other people to get off of those channels.
Gday mate,
Thats because they are long distance emergency channels.
They need to be kept free from convo chats for those reasons.
Cheers Tim
Clear as mud… sorry but an illustration of two way communication via a repeater from initial contact to call termination would be much more useful.
Copy that tim!👍
Haha :-)
Thanks mate.

Almost no activity on the valley repeater.
😂 high country 🤣 👍
