    I had not appreciated just how steep that line was until now. I feel for the firemen firing steam loco's in times past. What muscles they must have had. Great video, it reveals the line well..

      average gradient of 1:20 (both ways, up and down............)

      @@billseymour-jones3224 In older nomenclature the average gradient is 1 in 76 with actual gradients ranging from 1 in 69 (just N of Greskine) to 1 in 88 (the approach into the junction at the end of this clip). In comparison the Carstairs side of the climb is much less severe (1 in 100 to 1 in 1000) with some downhill sections as well.

      Yes, the firemen would have faced 10 miles of hard work when leaving Beattock northbound.
