I always like how you just attack these without a plan, lol. I believe I remember this tree from an older video. I use Elmer’s waterproof wood glue to seal up big wounds on “woody type” plants, and hardwood cuttings. lol you butchered that tree😂, but, it will grow back! Well, the more you reset it, the thicker that trunk will eventually be 😂 wiring the trunk instead of looks waaay better, I enjoyed this video as usual Mike. Hope all is well👋🏻 thanks for sharing.
@@BonsaiBoise hahaha don’t we all? I just don’t have enough space to do all I want to do. Some day tho. The living room is loaded with plant projects and half filmed video projects, and it’s not even January yet😢🙄
hindsight is 20/20, but this tree looks great in progress.. love the name “Work Tree”. I think i have a few of those Im stumped on. maybe ill turn them into stumps, and return the favor!😂☀️🤩☀️
Yeah I was hesitant to even document and post this one because it turned out so weird. The temptation is always there to put the best fruit out front and not show the ugly stuff. But, I was hoping that people would take it for what it is and maybe we all, (especially me), can all learn something from it. My biggest takeaway so far was actually looking at the older footage and seeing some of the branch selections I made. I'm sure it made sense at the time but I definitely would do it different than hindsight, kind of like you pointed out. I'm a great Monday morning quarterback LOL.
better light spectrum will shorten the nodes up for you mike, i got bloomplus bp3000 led from amazon 4 yrs ago. works great. grows better then full sun, they very friendly priced. cheers. happy bonsai'in!
Yeah I really do need to invest in better lights. I have pretty cheapo lights, but lots and lots of them lol. Probably not as good as half the amount of GOOD lights.
i think it ended up a nice literati style. not my fav of styles but still cool. i got issues with chinese elms.. idk why lol. i just keep trying. they dont like me. but im not giving up. one will eventually come out the way i want. fuken too. i gave up on those haha
My nemesis tree by far is the Ming Aralia. I am 0-6 on them. And it's not a slow, eventual death either. It's like, they take one look at me and just die. I've sworn them off forever! Until the next one...

Yep, that's where this one kind of left me too. Thanks!

Thanks Eric! Yeah I sort of backed into this butchery job without realizing what I was getting myself into. Like I do with most things in life. Lol

Well, this still can become a nice tree: it takes time...

I'm hoping so!
I like to cut back such trees to stump and root upper part. For ficuses even without air layering.
Only problem with the focus benjamina variety is they will die back without any leaves. Otherwise I was tempted to do that!
@@BonsaiBoisemaybe thats the reason why one of my ficus benjamina died. 😅

what did you end up doing with the big truck cuts that you made? propagate? how?
@@mikeyokai I propagated them. I put them in a water bottle for awhile till they rooted, then put them in little training pots.
It's almost a compost bin candidate and then concentrate on the cuttings..😂😂 I might have put it in a much larger pot to inspire much more growth..
The small pot was it's punishment for tormenting me 😎
@@BonsaiBoise 🤣🤣🤣
I gave up on ficus for all of the reasons you mentioned. They always did this to me.
I'd say 75% of mine are fairly predictable. But then I get one like this that refuses to play along...
@@BonsaiBoise well then, that makes me want to try again. Do you think the cuttings from the more predictable ones inherent that tendency also?
@@159awi From my experience, I don't think. But I can't say for sure.
I now I struggle. sad day.
I'm hoping the long term payoff will be worth it

Repot it at some point at a 45 degree angle and just call it Literati. 👌
Yep, I did consider that and so far it seems to be the most feasible option.
