It will be interesting - I tend to ignore these so see very little development. This coming year I am going to push myself and see what i can achieve in one year. They are definitely not my favourite for bonsai :)

Cheers Magnus. I will probably leave these alone for another year now I am happy with the root spread. The 'Year 3' chinese elm and trident maple root over rock will be looked at in the spring :)

As others have said you may as well leave the lower branch for now on the Jade, they are the only plants I would keep indoors, in my new place I don’t have room for other so called indoor trees. Great that you can keep us and yourself entertained Xav.

Cheers Joe - truthfully I am not a fan of indoor trees. I lose interest in them and they often have bugs. I'm not set up with grow lights or anything like that. For me, they just come in to survive the winter...just :)

Enjoyed the updates! My cents - you want to emulate Jelle, let the jade grow - just to see how big you can get if in one year. Pretty excited about the rocks being exposed in the ficus compositions. Interested to see how the exposed roots start to develop character.

Some of these slow time projects will be worth waiting for. I thought the roots might have gripped a lot more in this first year but the rafia I used had rotted away far too quickly. looks like clingfilm for now on :)

Good to see videos this time of year :) Thanks again Xav! I would let the jades grow and leave the lower branch to help thicken up the bottom some more, something you and the all the other great youtubers have taught me :)

I hadn't watched Jelle's video. Thanks for that suggestion. I don't have jades; long story. But my ficus microcarpa are getting attention this week. Just trims. I'll wait until summer for repotting. I have to slap my hands to keep from trying to root the cuttings. I already have plenty! Thanks for this cold weather video. Fun! Keep up the good work!

I just recently watched a video in TH-cam about developing a double Trunk jade within 2 years.
I remember the plant being potted up a few times from small to very large pot, it was pruned only when the branches got too heavy and pulled the trunks down, it was sprayed with fertilizer every 10 days or so and it was a 19:19:19 fertilizer I think.
At one point all unwanted branches and shoots were pruned off, and then it was left to grow until branches got too heavy again.
I got some jades too and I'll do something like that with them.
I will prune unwanted stuff off (bar branches) and pot them into larger terracotta pots.
I would not cut off anything left on your jades and would let them grow.

To find 5 out of your entire collection could be dangerous - I'd tend to put all my attention into those trees and neglect, to some extent, the rest. I'm sure you've got more control than I have & I wish you all the best in your choices. 😀😀

I was surprised you didn't put the first jade in a good sized pond basket. I'd leave the branches. Pruning sets everything back in my experience. 😢

The repotting will help. Leave the lower branch , and “chop the top” ( lol)

Hi Xavier, as determined last video, I don’t have a clue about Jades 🙃😘 So thanks for showing your collection and treatment. 😘 Ozeana - is it made of algae and little fish? 🐟I used aquarium water, some time ago, to fertilize. Maybe that was more pond like ocean. 😅 My trees liked it a lot, the soil didn’t. 😉
Meanwhile in Austria: The advertisements YT is putting in randomly in between your awesome videos, are in total as long, up to double as long, as your videos. Ads of course can be skipped. Just to let you know. So there’s a lot of time available for comments 😂
Enjoy your evening and your day 😁😘 Cheers 🙋‍♀️ Martina

Thanks for that Martina. I have definitely noticed how much more advertising is going onto YT videos. They are doing it for their own profits - not mine. The first month this was introduced I had an obvious drop in views...although it is picking back up again slowly.

A great update and overview of your jade's and ficus. Do you use any sort of grow light to extend the growing season or aid your indoor plants mate?

NUP. I am thinking about lights but the cost and space involved just isn't worth it for my 'interest level'. They are fun to muck about with but I'm certainly not going to spend money on them :)
