It really is a shame this gets blocked indeed. While I understand Disney trying to hide their darker past unfortunately there's no way they can without finding and destroying every copy of those movies, Hunchback had some of their best music ever done and now it's being made harder to access...such a shame...love your cover by the way. This is genius because, despite the fact Judge Frollo is French, a 15th-century Catholic of Noble birth and status would be praying in Latin. The part in the middle with the soldier would probably be in French.
What's funny is that, given Dom Claude Frollo's position in late 15th Century Parisian politics and religious affairs (Minister of Justice), he very well COULD have sung this in Latin. This is pure perfection. The Ecclesiastical pronunciation is flawless and goes so well with the heavy yet haunting lyrics. Bravo, gentlemen! This was a most excellent surprise.
Accidentally started singing this in a mix of Ecclesiastical and Classical, summoned my college professor and the local priest, who proceeded to stare me down, their eyes judging me before they told me to choose one or the other, not both.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the fact this guy not only was able to sing this song in Latin so well. But also the lyricist actually translated a song into another language and was able to keep the rhythm in tact. That’s really amazing
This was impressive indeed. But don't forget that this is exactly what is done in tens of languages for every Disney song and dialogue: Translating, while keeping meter and meaning utterly intact. You can find a job as good as this in any dub: But this had the added challenge of being more of a trochaic language (since Disney songs are originally in English, their meter can tend to be iambic), and a language that not many still know how to speak colloquially. So, double chapeau to this dub!
Interestingly enough, this happens in almost every language translation I've seen and heard. There are a few exceptions of course, but most of the time, different languages almost have a rhythm, or even rhyme with their counterparts.

Fun fact - the English singer of this song tried to get the song lowered to match his pitch - director denied him. So he had to do lessons and dozens of practices to get his pitch to match the music

It upsets me how a lot of people put down Latin and call it useless and etc because its a 'dead language'. Latin has such a rich history, and plays a key part in the founding of many modern languages and much more. It is still in fact used today, for certain purposes or by certain people. Hellfire in Latin gives me the goosebumps, and it really fits with the setting of the Middle Ages. Honestly, it should be used more for things like this.
there's a reason it's been used in medicine for writing patient diagnoses, like I know some countries such as Germany like to write their discharge papers with diagnoses in German, but that's a problem if the patient goes to another country and then the doctors have no idea what a "Bauchspeicheldrüsenentzündung" is and they have to google translate it. Meanwhile, if they had just written it in Latin as "pankreatitis", then everybody with a medical background would know what it is, especially since most diagnoses are the same in English and Latin. Like if you have a patient with "hypertensio arterialis, diabetes mellitus typus II, status post fractura femoris lat. dex. a.a. V, st. post appendectomiam a.a. XI, st. post infarctus cerebrovascularis a.a. III, CAVE PENICILLIN", most doctors will know the patient's diagnoses regardless of their native language.

At first I didn't like how this was in ecclesiastical Latin (because I am a bit of a classical snob), but when you think about it it actually makes more sense as that is the Latin that Frollo would actually speak.
the single most popular Disney Villain song that doesn't have goose-stepping hyenas? Course it's gonna get loads of covers. It's also one of the most humanized antagonist songs. Frollo's rage, lust, disgust and his rapid drop into insanity. there's just something so...perfect with the song that attracts so many people to do covers.
I didn't grow up Catholic, technically I'm still not since I haven't finished RCIA yet, but having that background has given me so much more appreciation of this song, and it in Latin is just another level on top.

Ecclesiastical pronunciation is perfect for this. Has such a distinctive feel, closer to our times. It has in it the history of Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. All variants of Latin pronunciation should be cherished.
Well technically a language evolves every minute, so just throwing all the time the language was talked under the title "Language" is presumptuous. I studied in University ancient civilizations. For instance, the Egyptian language, which was considered living until the early 20th century, covers basically six millennia. One can't reasonably expect the language to be the same in its earliest recorded form, and its latest. So, it's taught as several separate languages, considered parented, but different enough to be considered a new language. Latin pronunciation has evolved from the classical era into several directions because of the way its speakers were divided. You can hear clearly in the way this is sung close sonorities with Italian. But the closest modern language to Latin, in its vulgar form at any rate, is Romanian.

Especially with the catholic theme, making it a confessional but where Frollo refuses God, twice actually; once by refusing to admit guilt so he can be forgiven in that scene, and the second time when his prayers are answered when the guy shows up and tells him he has a chance to let go and move on, but he refuses to take it.

Well it is almost purposely made for singing. Almost as soon as The Church of Rome lost their monopoly on Latin to the common masses all the hymns and church songs immediately found themselves translated and that undoubtedly influenced the development of the common usage and understanding of it.
As an ex-Latin student, singer, and Disney nerd, this is the best thing that I have seen on TH-cam all week. The way you tweaked lyrics to make the rhyming scheme match up to the English was immaculate.
The song is simultaneously more threatening and more vulnerable in this cover. He really sounds so weak and afraid during “god have mercy on her”. Even the brief part by the guard who tells him Esmeralda escaped sounded really cool.
Woah ! In ecclesiastical latin ! You should have a look at the french version, the lyrics are way more mature and elaborated than the english one (i.e. "infernales bacchanales"). Victor Hugo is a genius and you have done one of the greatest tributes i've seen so far.
@@giagem404 "Infernales" is the adjective of the noun "enfer" (hell), so I guess the English traduction would be "Hellish"? As for Bacchanales, it is related to the god Bacchus, but those parties were parties where you would drink and fornicate, at least that is one of the meaning implied by "Bacchanales". In short, it's a fancy way to say: "What a f... sex party!"
Note, Frollo was actually a priest in the original book, not a judge. Some consider it was because Disney didn't want to make it seem like they were demonizing Christianity. Including have a 'good' priest as a counterpart to Frollo in the movie. But no, the perverted old man who lusted after a beautiful young woman was a priest... So consider that for a moment.

Since from the 1500s onward, till around the year 1800, life expectancy throughout Europe hovered between 30 and 40 years of age. So, while I see your arguement, he would still have been seen as fairly 'old' during this time.

THE PRONUNCIATION IS PERFECT! As a Latin speaker, it makes me unfathomably salty when these singers don’t pronounce the words correctly, but this is just PERFECT. One or two words are off but this would make mea Magistra proud! Edit: Wow, I should have clarified! It is Italian sounding, but religious Latin is supposed to sound like that. I am a Classical snob, and I learned both pronunciations (just far more practiced with Classical than Religious). Per his dialect of Latin, his pronunciation is quite typical, and, if it helps at all, in my four years of studying the language, we did briefly cover songs written in Latin. During that time, it was *allegedly* not uncommon for someone words to be skewed or made grammatically incorrect to better the flow of the song, not unlike what we do with English. You may be able to answer me this magister 😊 We had to sing in excelsis deo for the Christmas choir. I had to take Latin in Germany for 3 years 25 years ago and I was taught to pronounce ex-tselsis and the choir lady insisted we sing ex-tshelsis...not sure if I'm able to convey this correctly. Apparently this still bothers me to this day 😆 What's your opinion on this? Edit: just listened to Andrea Bocellis rendition...I wish I had thought of this before we did the whole choir song thing 😆 oh well...I suppose I'd make the rules if I was director of the choir...apparently I was over qualified and had to dumb myself down to fit in...I tried singing it in the way I was taught and was reprimanded and corrected. I like that the lyrics are actually more dramatic in Latin, “lascivum vulgus” sounds (at least to me) more condescending than the English equivalent, and “fecisti Satan fortiorem homine” sounds more like an accusation than expressing powerlessness. Maybe it’s because I don’t know too much Latin, but I really like how the Latin lyrics are. Also, Ecclesiastical Latin sounds really poetic with this song in particular (I read the description mentioning meter), and I think it was the better choice with this song.

It's incredible how inflected languages can convey so much meaning in so few words. Reminds me of that description of (I think) Thucydides: his words almost equal his sentences in number.

Aren’t proper nouns supposed to be said in their native language regardless of the language of the sentence? Therefore Smaragdam would be correct for referring to emerald as an object but the name would still be Esmeralda?
It would have been cool to have had the guard speak in the traditional French pronunciation of Latin. After the fall of the West, there were many regional ways that Latin was pronounced. Eventually, the Holy See mandated that the traditional Italian pronunciation be used, and now most schools teach the restored classical pronunciation.
Yes indeed! I have made videos about this topic. I even have a video on this channel in a traditional pronunciation of French Latin. But the Ecclesiastical was chosen for conventional reasons. 😊

@just your average potato There are equivalents in languages for different names, like Michael and Miguel, James and Jaime, Mary María, Margaret Margarita... But in this case I imagine that is easier, as "Esmeralda" is also the name of a gemstone.
What's really cool about hearing Latin sung in this style is that I could actually hear the influence on Italian and French in there in the pronunciation of some words. There was also a word or two that almost sounded German, which makes sense. Anyway, nice work. I don't know much about latin but I'd love to learn, and your voice relaly is suited to this song. That’s right! Stefano Vittori and I are also great fans of the 1984 movie Amadeus, where actor Tom Hulce plays Mozart as he composes these very lines in his requiem. Tom Hulce performed the voice for the Hunchback in the original version of Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

my latin teacher tried so hard to make me care about the language, if she had shown me this maybe i would have 😅 i preferred classical civilization studies to classical languages back then. 2 years of the Cambridge latin course. after hearing this for the first time i found the textbook online and started working on relearning the content of a class I usually spent doing homework for other classes . Translating "she will be mine" to "she will be my prey" is a perfect translation of the cruelty and possessiveness Frollo has. I love the choice.

but in english, My and Mine are essentially euphonic forms of the same word
My and mine are essentially two forms of the same word, with my being used attributively before the noun, and mine being used in all other cases, as may be seen in most of the usage examples and quotations above. In this respect, this word is analogous to most of the other possessive pronouns (e.g. your vs. yours), as well as a number of other noun modifiers, such as lone/alone.
Historically, my came to be used only before a consonant sound, and later came to be used regardless of the following sound. Nonetheless, mine still sees archaic pre-vocalic use, as may be seen in the 1862 quotation above, and in the most formal of writing even into the 20th century.

In latin, however, there is no need (nor has it ever been attested) to change the word meus, -a, -um (the two hyphenated endings replace -us in their respective forms, as it is how basic forms of adjectives are presented in latin) based on the following sound - the only change that occurs is grammatical case agreement with the noun that meus, -a, -um modifies - in this case "praeda mea": praeda (prey) is in nominative and feminine, so meus, -a, -um changes to agree with it (so feminine nominative - mea).
I'm fifty fifty on it. Sure, it let's the audience know of his possessiveness, but it doesn't sound like something he'd say.
This is genius because, despite the fact Judge Frollo is French, a 15th-century Catholic of Noble birth and status would be praying in Latin. The part in the middle with the soldier would probably be in French.

What's funny is that, given Dom Claude Frollo's position in late 15th Century Parisian politics and religious affairs (Minister of Justice), he very well COULD have sung this in Latin. This is pure perfection. The Ecclesiastical pronunciation is flawless and goes so well with the heavy yet haunting lyrics. Bravo, gentlemen! This was a most excellent surprise.

This was impressive indeed. But don't forget that this is exactly what is done in tens of languages for every Disney song and dialogue: Translating, while keeping meter and meaning utterly intact. You can find a job as good as this in any dub: But this had the added challenge of being more of a trochaic language (since Disney songs are originally in English, their meter can tend to be iambic), and a language that not many still know how to speak colloquially. So, double chapeau to this dub!
Interestingly enough, this happens in almost every language translation I've seen and heard. There are a few exceptions of course, but most of the time, different languages almost have a rhythm, or even rhyme with their counterparts.
This was truly amazing! I have no reference for how accurate it is, but it sounded great!

It upsets me how a lot of people put down Latin and call it useless and etc because its a 'dead language'. Latin has such a rich history, and plays a key part in the founding of many modern languages and much more. It is still in fact used today, for certain purposes or by certain people. Hellfire in Latin gives me the goosebumps, and it really fits with the setting of the Middle Ages. Honestly, it should be used more for things like this.
And has a beautiful sound in the talk. Even when you're insulting someone. Just saying "fuck you" in Latin is beautiful: "Futue te Ipsum!"
there's a reason it's been used in medicine for writing patient diagnoses, like I know some countries such as Germany like to write their discharge papers with diagnoses in German, but that's a problem if the patient goes to another country and then the doctors have no idea what a "Bauchspeicheldrüsenentzündung" is and they have to google translate it. Meanwhile, if they had just written it in Latin as "pankreatitis", then everybody with a medical background would know what it is, especially since most diagnoses are the same in English and Latin. Like if you have a patient with "hypertensio arterialis, diabetes mellitus typus II, status post fractura femoris lat. dex. a.a. V, st. post appendectomiam a.a. XI, st. post infarctus cerebrovascularis a.a. III, CAVE PENICILLIN", most doctors will know the patient's diagnoses regardless of their native language.

Ecclesiastical pronunciation is perfect for this. Has such a distinctive feel, closer to our times. It has in it the history of Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. All variants of Latin pronunciation should be cherished.

Well technically a language evolves every minute, so just throwing all the time the language was talked under the title "Language" is presumptuous.
I studied in University ancient civilizations. For instance, the Egyptian language, which was considered living until the early 20th century, covers basically six millennia. One can't reasonably expect the language to be the same in its earliest recorded form, and its latest. So, it's taught as several separate languages, considered parented, but different enough to be considered a new language.
Latin pronunciation has evolved from the classical era into several directions because of the way its speakers were divided.
You can hear clearly in the way this is sung close sonorities with Italian. But the closest modern language to Latin, in its vulgar form at any rate, is Romanian.

Especially with the catholic theme, making it a confessional but where Frollo refuses God, twice actually; once by refusing to admit guilt so he can be forgiven in that scene, and the second time when his prayers are answered when the guy shows up and tells him he has a chance to let go and move on, but he refuses to take it.

Well it is almost purposely made for singing. Almost as soon as The Church of Rome lost their monopoly on Latin to the common masses all the hymns and church songs immediately found themselves translated and that undoubtedly influenced the development of the common usage and understanding of it.

@@giagem404 "Infernales" is the adjective of the noun "enfer" (hell), so I guess the English traduction would be "Hellish"? As for Bacchanales, it is related to the god Bacchus, but those parties were parties where you would drink and fornicate, at least that is one of the meaning implied by "Bacchanales".
In short, it's a fancy way to say: "What a f... sex party!"

Note, Frollo was actually a priest in the original book, not a judge. Some consider it was because Disney didn't want to make it seem like they were demonizing Christianity. Including have a 'good' priest as a counterpart to Frollo in the movie. But no, the perverted old man who lusted after a beautiful young woman was a priest... So consider that for a moment.

THE PRONUNCIATION IS PERFECT! As a Latin speaker, it makes me unfathomably salty when these singers don’t pronounce the words correctly, but this is just PERFECT. One or two words are off but this would make mea Magistra proud!
Edit: Wow, I should have clarified! It is Italian sounding, but religious Latin is supposed to sound like that. I am a Classical snob, and I learned both pronunciations (just far more practiced with Classical than Religious). Per his dialect of Latin, his pronunciation is quite typical, and, if it helps at all, in my four years of studying the language, we did briefly cover songs written in Latin. During that time, it was *allegedly* not uncommon for someone words to be skewed or made grammatically incorrect to better the flow of the song, not unlike what we do with English. Please don’t start a war in the replies lmao

We had to sing in excelsis deo for the Christmas choir.
I had to take Latin in Germany for 3 years 25 years ago and I was taught to pronounce ex-tselsis and the choir lady insisted we sing ex-tshelsis...not sure if I'm able to convey this correctly. Apparently this still bothers me to this day 😆

I like that the lyrics are actually more dramatic in Latin, “lascivum vulgus” sounds (at least to me) more condescending than the English equivalent, and “fecisti Satan fortiorem homine” sounds more like an accusation than expressing powerlessness. Maybe it’s because I don’t know too much Latin, but I really like how the Latin lyrics are.
Also, Ecclesiastical Latin sounds really poetic with this song in particular (I read the description mentioning meter), and I think it was the better choice with this song.
You really need to listen to the German version. That's in my opinion the strongest version by far

@@KCrouch-t2o Esmeralda is the spanish translation of Emerald, and it's also the name of the movie's deuteragonist: a beautiful Gypsy with green eyes (like emeralds, hence the name) which drives Frollo crazy
Aren’t proper nouns supposed to be said in their native language regardless of the language of the sentence? Therefore Smaragdam would be correct for referring to emerald as an object but the name would still be Esmeralda?
Not unless you’re writing poetry and you require the meter to work.

It would have been cool to have had the guard speak in the traditional French pronunciation of Latin. After the fall of the West, there were many regional ways that Latin was pronounced. Eventually, the Holy See mandated that the traditional Italian pronunciation be used, and now most schools teach the restored classical pronunciation.
Yes indeed! I have made videos about this topic. I even have a video on this channel in a traditional pronunciation of French Latin. But the Ecclesiastical was chosen for conventional reasons. 😊

Latin is not a dead language. People are still able to read it, write in it, understand it, speak it, communicate in it. Just because it’s not an official language of any country doesn’t mean it’s a dead language. 🙂

@just your average potato There are equivalents in languages for different names, like Michael and Miguel, James and Jaime, Mary María, Margaret Margarita... But in this case I imagine that is easier, as "Esmeralda" is also the name of a gemstone.

What's really cool about hearing Latin sung in this style is that I could actually hear the influence on Italian and French in there in the pronunciation of some words. There was also a word or two that almost sounded German, which makes sense. Anyway, nice work. I don't know much about latin but I'd love to learn, and your voice relaly is suited to this song. That’s right! Stefano Vittori and I are also great fans of the 1984 movie Amadeus, where actor Tom Hulce plays Mozart as he composes these very lines in his requiem. Tom Hulce performed the voice for the Hunchback in the original version of Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Something that always kinda bothered me about some latin covers and dubs was how there was little to no feeling in the voice, it felt dead, meanwhile in games like for Honor is like hearing an angry warrior shout in their mother tongue, and this is why i love bardcore covers and this cover, you really out your soul into it, is not like you are reading an academic paper, you are truly singing this masterpiece.

There's something about the notes being in a lower pitch in the 'Protect me Maria' part of the song as opposed to the original that makes this song feel heavier
as someone who studied latin and at the top of my class, I love that you did this, latin has so many flavors as it cycles through its tones, and it feels both so refined yet so primal.
my latin teacher tried so hard to make me care about the language, if she had shown me this maybe i would have 😅 i preferred classical civilization studies to classical languages back then. 2 years of the Cambridge latin course. after hearing this for the first time i found the textbook online and started working on relearning the content of a class I usually spent doing homework for other classes .
